Abstract
ALTHOUGH it is common knowledge that a steel beam may be replaced by a geometrically similar duralumin beam, with a resultant saving in weight, it is not so generally known that such a procedure invariably involves the use of an unnecessarily large quantity of the light‐alloy, and is, therefore, wasteful. The reason for this is that adherence to geometrical similarity, when changing from steel to duralumin, accords the same proportional increase in thickness to all parts of the beam, thus giving uneconomical distribution of metal. It seems, therefore, that some notes showing how more efficient metal distribution may be achieved by departure from geometrical similarity may perhaps prove of interest.

PROBLEMS relating to built‐in or rigid‐end members under transverse loading are frequently encountered by the aircraft engineer. In the following paper discussion of relevant theorems leads to the development of Clapeyron's Theorem of Three Moments. The latter is particularly valuable in, for example, estimating the crankshaft bearing loads in a non‐radial engine. Attention is also drawn to Wilson's method of solving continuous beam problems. This simple method produces results identical with those given by the Theorem of Three Moments and deserves wider recognition.

IT is shown in the present paper that a beam may be constructed, consisting of a steel section securely bolted to a lower section of high‐tensile aluminium alloy, having a weight much lower than that of a plain steel beam of equal strength. This is frequently desirable when the weight of a steel beam would be excessive, but the cost of a section constructed entirely of aluminium alloy is unwarranted.

Abstract
Incentives are effective at enhancing productivity, but research also suggests that performance incentives can have “unintended negative consequences” including increases in hazard/injuries, increases in errors, and reduction in cooperation, prosocial behaviors, and creativity. Relatively overlooked is whether, when, and how incentives can be designed to prevent such negative consequences. The authors review literature in several disciplines (construction, healthcare delivery, economics, psychology, and [some] management) on this issue. This chapter, in toto, sheds a generally positive light and suggests that, beyond productivity, incentives can be used to improve other outcomes such as safety, quality, prosocial behaviors, and creativity, particularly when the incentives are thoughtfully designed. The review concludes with several potential fruitful areas for future research such as investigations of incentive-effect duration.

Spiritual ecology explores the interface of religions and spiritualities on the one hand, and environments, ecologies, and environmentalisms on the other. As an international environmental movement, spiritual ecology involves a multitude of diverse leaders, organizations, and initiatives. They share a common concern and commitment to pursuing the vital role of religion and spirituality in environmentalism to complement secular approaches to environmental problems and issues from the local to the global levels. Here, after some background, spiritual ecology as a component of the phenomena of international environmental movements is exemplified through three cases: the Green Belt Movement beginning in Kenya, the Green Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Alliance of Religions and Conservation affiliate of the World Wide Fund for Nature (formerly World Wildlife Fund).

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.
