Abstract

In high-end interactive service work settings, asymmetries between workers and customers are typically reflected in the service interaction. Workers must carefully control their emotional and aesthetic displays towards customers by relying on protocol provided by management. Customers, in turn, need not reciprocate such acts. By contrast, this paper theorizes service interactions that, paradoxically, aim to narrow the social distance between those on either side of the counter. Drawing on ethnographic data from a higher-end Los Angeles restaurant, I introduce the concept of proximal service as performed relationships in which server and served engage in peer-like interactions in a commercial setting. I show how management structures this drama through hiring, training, and shopfloor policies, all of which encourage select workers to approach customers using informal, flexible, and peer-like performances. I close by discussing how a branded experience of service amongst equals relates to symbolic exclusion and social inequality, and suggest that proximal service may be on the rise within upscale, urban service establishments seeking to offer a more “authentic” consumption experience.

Abstract

The current study was guided by narrative and feminist inquiry and focuses on the procreative consciousness and the construction of a procreative identity in 14 unmarried, child-free graduate students. Analysis of respondent and narrative interviews revealed five themes in the narrative data, which were used to hypothesize how men and women form their procreative identities, how their stories have been altered through time, and how they think others view their procreative decisions. Findings support five different pathways to the informant’s current procreative consciousness. Informants also perceived an existing traditional stereotype toward the childfree lifestyle.

Abstract

Purpose

Although big data have emerged at the cornerstone of business and management research, past studies have failed to offer explanations and classifications of different levels of capacity and expertise possessed by different countries in utilising big data. The purpose of this paper is to examine the different capacities of governments in utilising big data.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a comprehensive synopsis of the literature on big data and the role of governments in utilising and harnessing big data.

Findings

The study provides an array of explanations to account for why some countries are adept at using big data to solve social problems, while others often faltered.

Research limitations/implications

The study offers a range of explanations and suggestions, which include skills upgrading, to help countries improve their capabilities in data collection and data analysis.

Originality/value

In this paper, data collection-data analysis matrix was developed to characterise the role of governments in data collection and analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

Social media platforms established social relationship between the consumer and the brand community. The purpose of this paper is to propose a model to understand how dual-identification impact on the community citizenship behavior (CCB). Specifically, the authors propose perceived community-brand similarity (PCBS) influence CCB via dual-identification and brand passion (BP).

Design/methodology/approach

The research sample consists of 323 members who have used Apple product and used Apple fan page for more than one year, and structural equation modeling was used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

The results indicated that PCBS directly influenced brand identification (BI) and community identification (CI), respectively. BI directly influenced CI. CI directly influenced BP, but BI not directly influenced BP. In the mediation effects, both the dual-identification factors and BP play important mediating roles.

Practical implications

From a managerial standpoint, this research provides implications for social network sites management.

Originality/value

This research fills a void in the BI and CI are coexisting but distinct aspects of virtual communities. In addition, the mediating role of dual-identification factors and BP in the online community consumer-brand relationship has not been fully investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the challenges posed by Big Data to current trends in computation, networking and storage technology at various stages of Big Data analysis. The work aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and highlight the areas of potential research.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a systematic and critical review of the relevant literature to explore the challenges posed by Big Data to hardware technology, and assess the worthiness of hardware technology at various stages of Big Data analysis. Online computer-databases were searched to identify the literature relevant to: Big Data requirements and challenges; and evolution and current trends of hardware technology.

Findings

The findings reveal that even though current hardware technology has not evolved with the motivation to support Big Data analysis, it significantly supports Big Data analysis at all stages. However, they also point toward some important shortcomings and challenges of current technology trends. These include: lack of intelligent Big Data sources; need for scalable real-time analysis capability; lack of support (in networks) for latency-bound applications; need for necessary augmentation (in network support) for peer-to-peer networks; and rethinking on cost-effective high-performance storage subsystem.

Research limitations/implications

The study suggests that a lot of research is yet to be done in hardware technology, if full potential of Big Data is to be unlocked.

Practical implications

The study suggests that practitioners need to meticulously choose the hardware infrastructure for Big Data considering the limitations of technology.

Originality/value

This research arms industry, enterprises and organizations with the concise and comprehensive technical-knowledge about the capability of current hardware technology trends in solving Big Data problems. It also highlights the areas of potential research and immediate attention which researchers can exploit to explore new ideas and existing practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to help the financial institutions improve the predictability of business failure of supply chain finance (SCF) clients with the use of external big data set.

Design/methodology/approach

A prediction model for the business failure of SCF clients was built upon different theoretical perspectives. Logistic regression method was deployed to test the model.

Findings

The authors develop a model that illustrates several key determinants to predict the probability of business failure of SCF clients based on several theoretical perspectives. The results show that taxable sales revenue, frequency of making value added tax (VAT) payment, number of counterparty for VAT invoice issuance, frequency of VAT invoice issuance and firm age are negatively correlated with business failure of SCF clients while the VAT paid and industry clockspeed are positively correlated with their business failure.

Practical implications

This paper shows how financial institutions can effectively leverage the external information sources through “unconventional” predictor variables in order to reduce the credit risks associated with business failure of SCF clients.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first to focus on the potential use of financial big data set from external sources to improve of predictability of financial institutions on the business failure of SCF clients. In addition, this paper is a pivotal study on the financial client risk assessment based on taxpaying behaviors, tax amount, firm and industry characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to quantify external and internal uncertainties in product design process. The research addresses the measure of product future changes.

Design/methodology/approach

Two methods are proposed to model and quantify uncertainty in the product life cycle. Changes of user preferences are considered as the external uncertainty. Changes stemming from dependencies between components are addressed as the internal uncertainty. Both methods use developed mechanisms to capture and treat changes of user preferences. An agent-based model is developed to simulate sociotechnical events in the product life cycle for the external uncertainty. An innovative application of Big Data Analytics (BDA) is proposed to evaluate the external and internal uncertainties in product design. The methods can identify the most affected product components under uncertainty.

Findings

The results show that the proposed method could identify product changes during its life cycle, particularly using the proposed BDA method.

Practical implications

It is essential for manufacturers in the competitive market to know their product changes under uncertainty. Proposed methods have potential to optimize design parameters in complex environments.

Originality/value

This research bridges the gap of literature in the accurate estimation of uncertainty. The research integrates the change prediction and change transferring, applies data management methods innovatively, and utilizes the proposed methods practically.

Abstract

Purpose

Although big data analytics has reaped great business rewards, big data system design and integration still face challenges resulting from the demanding environment, including challenges involving variety, uncertainty, and complexity. These characteristics in big data systems demand flexible and agile integration architectures. Furthermore, a formal model is needed to support design and verification. The purpose of this paper is to resolve the two problems with a collective intelligence (CI) model.

Design/methodology/approach

In the conceptual CI framework as proposed by Schut (2010), a CI design should be comprised of a general model, which has formal form for verification and validation, and also a specific model, which is an implementable system architecture. After analyzing the requirements of system integration in big data environments, the authors apply the CI framework to resolve the integration problem. In the model instantiation, the authors use multi-agent paradigm as the specific model, and the hierarchical colored Petri Net (PN) as the general model.

Findings

First, multi-agent paradigm is a good implementation for reuse and integration of big data analytics modules in an agile and loosely coupled method. Second, the PN models provide effective simulation results in the system design period. It gives advice on business process design and workload balance control. Third, the CI framework provides an incrementally build and deployed method for system integration. It is especially suitable to the dynamic data analytics environment. These findings have both theoretical and managerial implications.

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors propose a CI framework, which includes both practical architectures and theoretical foundations, to solve the system integration problem in big data environment. It provides a new point of view to dynamically integrate large-scale modules in an organization. This paper also has practical suggestions for Chief Technical Officers, who want to employ big data technologies in their companies.
