Abstract

The Milk and Dairies (Scotland) Order, 1925.—This Order, framed under Section 12 of the Act, and applying to Scotland as a whole, was issued along with the model dairy byelaws. It prescribed the form of register of dairies and dairymen, and contained provisions for the ascertainment of infectious disease at dairies, for the prevention of contamination of milk at railway stations, on the street, by means of unsuitable conveyances or unsuitable surroundings, or through insulticient protection from dust or exposure. The colouring or thickening of cream was prohibited by the Order; me use of wooden vessels, except for buttermilk, was prohibited; milk vessels for transit were required to nave marked on them the name and address of the owner, to have a proper lid, and to be locked or sealed. The Order also filled a gap in the administrative provisions of the Act by requiring every person about a dairy, if he became aware that any person in his household was suffering from an infectious disease, to notify the dairyman immediately. The dairyman must then notify the medical officer of health.

Abstract

The Second Sixth Form Working Party of the Schools Council showed, in Working Paper 45 16 – 19: Growth and Response, that as many as 25 per cent of students entering the sixth form in 1970 did not undertake studies beyond General Certificate of Education ‘O’ level or the Certificate of Secondary Education. To this number must be added the large number who entered further education colleges. Both figures seem to have risen in the last five years. Typically these students repeat, or take additional subjects, at ‘O’ level or CSE, or ‘convert’ a CSE into an ‘O’ level or take equivalent qualifications. Their time‐table may well contain a large number of private study periods. Most stay for only one year for a variety of reasons: because their parents wanted them to do so; because they want more time or more qualifications before getting a job; or because they are not old enough to start in their chosen career. Others attend as part of an educational programme, on day release from their jobs.

Abstract

Among the many pressing questions of the day that of the establishment of village libraries is most important, for it affects widely the future intellectual life of the rural population. Moreover the moment has undoubtedly arrived when it must be dealt with in a wide and generous spirit, so that all who may be concerned in such a movement—and who is not?—may pull together in inaugurating a system which in coming years may prove not only practical and beneficial, but which may be established on sound and enduring lines, lines which do not run counter to existing organisations, but which gather into one harmonious whole the best traditions and the finest experiences of all those who in the past have fostered the reading habit and dealt with the practical side of the selection, conservation and distribution of books.

Abstract

CEO Richard Gedman has suddenly found himself running two separate but potentially related businesses: the slot manufacturing and marketing business that he has been running for years, and a new online and mobile gaming business that has grown incredibly fast over the past couple of years. To sustain success in both businesses, it seems clear that each one will require significant R&D investments. Should he invest in only one or both?

After students analyze the case, they will have a greater appreciation for why successful marketing requires a true understanding of customers and their preferences, rather than (for example) merely examining competitor offerings. They will also have a clearer understanding of how to calculate some of the basic metrics needed to do a marketing analysis (e.g., market share, price per unit) and how these metrics can inform any marketing decisions significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to capture an insider's view of the organizational culture and management practices that contributed to the downfall of Enron. In light of the current worldwide financial and economic crisis, this article aims to highlight some of the unlearned lessons from the past.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative interview case study was used for the basis of this paper.

Findings

This article shares an insider's (former vice president's) insights related to the practices and culture that led to Enron's unethical decisions and strategies. It discusses one man's view of the history of Enron, as well as what should have been learned and applied to the global financial industry to help to minimize or even avoid today's painful economic crisis.

Practical implications

Six main causes of unethical behavior for individuals in organizations are outlined, and important lessons learned are presented. The article also discusses the importance of reflecting and remaining inwardly vigilant, while outwardly thinking of and serving others.

Originality/value

The information for this article was based upon an original interview.

Abstract

Provides statistics on trends in the quantity of publications of Clem Tisdell, changing patterns of their joint authorship and variations in their interdisciplinary nature. The genesis of his publications, particularly his books, is explained, along with the interdependence between them, relationships which would be far from obvious to an independent casual observer. Those publications have had further academic and personal consequences and have given rise to surprising opportunities. A similar study is undertaken of his research projects. His consultancies are briefly discussed and it is demonstrated how they have benefited his academic research and teaching. He has found that economics provides tremendous scope for versatility and diversity in exploring the world around us.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper is an exercise in “metaphoric defamiliarisation”. The metaphor of the search for a conceptual framework as “quest” is unpacked and an alternative, based on Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark, is proposed in its place.

Design/methodology/approach

Many points of correspondence between Carroll's unlikely expedition and the work of standard setting bodies are noted and developed. The possibility that a conceptual framework might turn out to be a “Boojum” is examined.

Findings

Noting that timing precludes the possibility that The Hunting of the Snark is an allegory of accounting standard setting, a possible social explanation drawing on Cornford's Microcosmographia Academica is proposed.

Originality/value

Examines the use of the quest metaphor and what it tells us about standard setters' approaches. An alternative metaphor is proposed as being more appropriate and, by contrasting the two, the content of the first is thrown into sharper relief.
