Abstract

Richard Quandt has recently noted an increasing tendency on the part of professional economists to introspect their work and activities. Whether this trend derives from some existential angst brought on by a feeling that the marginal social return from the nth journal article does not differ significantly from zero, or whether it results from a desire to formalise sheer bloody‐mindedness (“my two page article in the American Economic Review is better than your 50 page survey in the Journal of Cerebral Economics”) is not our concern. We simply wish to move with the tide by producing our own survey of how British economists rank the “prestige” of the professional journals. Our survey results are reported below and it will be seen that they have been produced in a manner which makes them directly comparable to those produced for America by Hawkins, Ritter and Walter. We also offer some comparisons with the findings of Moore.

Abstract

Computers with graphics screens and pointing devices such as the ‘mouse’ provide the opportunity for highly interactive user interfaces. This paper describes some novel software for displaying documents on graphics screens: the software provides a fast and simple way for users to peruse documents and to examine the parts that interest them. One application of the software is as a front end to a document retrieval system, since it provides a way for users to identify quickly the records that are of relevance to them and to provide feedback between the user and the underlying retrieval system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss modifying an existing bookmarklet which is a button‐based tool that adds functionality to a web browser. This modification allows an individual to search a library's OPAC by ISBN for numbers encountered in the body of web documents such as bibliographies or book reviews.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper documents the code for the bookmarklet and its modification for different browsers.

Findings

The process involves using JavaScript to copy highlighted text from a web page and send it as a search to the local OPAC.

Practical implications

This tool allows the user to check if a particular book encountered on the web is held in a local library by highlighting the ISBN tool and clicking a browser button. The utility may be useful to library patrons as a discovery tool for finding books and can be used to automate aspects of daily library operations. Suggested applications and further variations and modifications to search by data elements other than ISBN, such as ISSN or title are discussed.

Originality/value

The process discussed adds a new way to access a library's holdings.

Abstract

Offers a brief overview of the use of the kinds of estimating techniques that are structured in some way to present consistent, reliable time data. Stresses that the accuracy of estimating often depends on the experience of the estimator in the field in which he or she is estimating. Assess the relative merits of analytical estimation and comparative estimation, and suggests that both be used depending on the nature of the event.

Abstract

Looks at the functions and uses of computer‐aided learning (CAL) and computer‐based training software programmes. Considers what can be done with these programmes and how to build a well‐designed, sophisticated learning package. Concludes with an examination of the GUIDE learning system.

Abstract

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

Abstract

The subject of a recent MA thesis in Library and Information Studies is the development of a prototype scholars workstation for presentation of materials, in a hypermedia format, from the Dickens House Museum Library, London. Type and number of materials is provided. Basic hypertext features and authoring attributes of the hypermedia software used, Guide 3.0 for Windows, are described and the time factors inherent in research, planning and development of such a project are emphasized. Elements of screen design are described and presentation of textual and visual materials are provided with accompanying illustrations of navigational pathways. Testing of the prototype is described, including the test sample, the questionnaire and evaluation form, and brief conclusions.

Abstract

In October 1976 the University of Kent at Canterbury Library implemented an on‐line circulation control system. Based on an Interdata 74 mini computer and using Plessey light pens, a Pertec VDU and a teletype, the system (KLACS) operates for 84 hours a week. The system was designed to include all the features available under the manual system together with the automatic production of lists, recall notices and statistical data. The file specification and the input/output facilities are described in detail.
