Abstract

In 1986, the issue of violence at work was thrust into the arena of public debate by the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh and the deaths of three social workers in the course of their duties. These atypical cases represent the extreme end of a continuum of violence and vulnerability, but they were sufficient to warrant the formation of a Government committee chaired by Lady Trumpington, parliamentary Under Secretary for Health. The aim of the committee is to develop a common approach to violence across the health, social services and social security fields.

Abstract

Purpose

Exposure to isocyanates was the leading cause of occupational asthma in the UK. Motor vehicle repair (MVR) bodyshop paint sprayers were at greatest risk, despite widespread use of air-fed breathing apparatus and ventilated booths. Most paint sprayers work in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The purpose of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) project, described in this paper, is to improve exposure control measures in at least 20 per cent of MVR bodyshops, and reduce the risk of occupational asthma. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-stranded plan consisted of: Safety and Health Awareness Days (SHADs); workplace inspections; and third-party stakeholder communications. The impact of various parts of the project were evaluated.

Findings

Approximately 18 per cent of bodyshops in the UK attended one of 32 SHADs, following which over 90 per cent of delegates expressed an “intention to act” to improve exposure control measures. A local assessment showed that at least 50 per cent of bodyshops improved exposure control measures. An evaluation of 109 inspections found that enforcement action was taken at 40 per cent of visits. Third-party engagement produced a joint HSE-industry designed poster, new agreed guidance on spray booths and dissemination of SHAD material. Knowledge of booth clearance time has become widespread, and 85 per cent of booths now have pressure gauges. Biological monitoring data show that, post-SHAD, exposures were lower.

Originality/value

A sustained national project using clear, relevant, tested messages delivered via different routes, had a sector-wide impact in bodyshops. It is probable that the project has improved isocyanate exposure control in at least 20 per cent of bodyshops. The generic lessons could be applied to other widespread SME businesses.

Abstract

Recently, when I asked a forty year old artist friend if she was interested in women's achievements, she said, with a perfectly straight face, “Which achievements?” She continued with the assertion that women are not the ones who have done things in this world. All the exciting and important events have been engineered, created, and/or directed by men. Read the biographies, the histories, subtract a few token queens surrounded by powerful men and see, she ended triumphantly. Yet she would have been enraged by the antique dealer I confronted a month later when I needed to identify the painter of an early twentieth century landscape. The artist's signature was very difficult to read, and only the first and middle initials were given with the last name. The dealer announced he would check to see who “he” was in one of his catalogs on Maine art. Recklessly, I asked, “What makes you think it isn't a woman?” “Because there are no good women artists,” he snapped.

Abstract

It has been close to two years since the last survey of art reference materials in Reference Services Review. Consequently this column will cover as much as possible of the intervening period, roughly from the winter of 1979–1980 until early fall of 1981. It has been a relatively lean period in volume of material produced, but the art reference sources which have appeared are all of high quality and cover aspects of the field which are in need of coverage or of updating.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of a collaborative workshop, aimed to support teacher educators in embedding a “global outlook” in the curriculum on their perceived professional development.

Design/methodology/approach

The workshop included working sessions, during a period of 13 months, and was structured as participatory action research, according to which volunteer academics designed, developed and evaluated global education projects in their course units. Data were gathered through a focus group session, conducted with the teacher educators at a final stage of the workshop, and analyzed according to the principles of thematic analysis.

Findings

Results of the analysis suggest that the workshop presented a meaningful opportunity for teacher educators to reconstruct their knowledge and teaching practice to (re)discover the importance of collaborative work and to assume new commitments to themselves and to others.

Originality/value

The study addresses a gap in the existing literature on academic staff development in internationalization of the curriculum, focusing on the perceptions of teacher educators’, whose voices have been largely silent in research in the field. The study concludes with a set of recommendations for a professional development program in internationalization of the curriculum.
