Abstract

As the banks increase the number and complexity of their products and services in the marketplace they not only rely on the skills of their “sharp end” staff to be able to sell them, but also the staff must want to sell them. The article examines some organisations that have tried to get genuine staff involvement.

Abstract

Differences between controlled time (your choice of how to use your time) and response time (meeting the demands on your time by other people) are described. It is suggested that managers can increase their controlled time, first by assessing priorities and second by screening out demands, by establishing work processes that are right for you. Examples of how to “close the door” in an open‐plan office are given.

Abstract

Posits that every enterprise must institutionalize its workplace learning systems and opportunities in such a way that it radiates what it has already achieved and from this moves on to realize its full potential – in short, the enterprise itself is the key. Examines in successive chapters: the individual manager and questioning insights (Q); the major systems which the enterprise uses to capture and structure its learning; a SWOT analysis of the enterprise′s total learning; action learning, its contribution to the achievement of enterprise growth, and the role of programmed knowledge (P); the Enterprise School of Management (ESM) as a phoenix of enlightenment and effectiveness rising from the ashes of traditional, less effective management training initiatives; and, finally, the practical realization of the action learning dream, as evidenced by emerging examples of successful and profitable implementation worldwide. Concludes with a selection of pertinent abstracts.

Abstract

This is an account of how the London Borough of Bromley introduced an approach to Management Development based around a performance appraisal mechanism (which they call Performance Review) from autumn 1985 to spring 1986. The need for an improvement in management methods and approaches was inspired by a strong and imaginative paper on “survival management style” published by the Chief Executive in June 1985. This was a time when local government in Britain was thinking very seriously about its right to continue doing what it had traditionally regarded as its own. However, the strong guidelines contained in the Chief Executive's paper were not in themselves capable of getting a common approach to better management started on its own. It needed much more in the way of structure and order, and this is what the management development programme set out to provide.

Abstract

A programme was undertaken to help a bank in the Gulf to improve its training effectiveness. The commercial bank offered a complete range of banking services, employed 500 people, was only six years old but was in trouble. The training assignment had two parts: the first was to examine the bank's operating procedures and design a model training manual and the second was to run a short training programme for senior bank officers to enable them to play an active role in the training.

Abstract

The librarian and researcher have to be able to uncover specific articles in their areas of interest. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume IV, like Volume III, contains features to help the reader to retrieve relevant literature from MCB University Press' considerable output. Each entry within has been indexed according to author(s) and the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus. The latter thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid retrieval. Each article or book is assigned its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. This Volume indexes 29 journals indicating the depth, coverage and expansion of MCB's portfolio.
