Abstract

Outlines the challenge to libraries when incorporating the new and sophisticated means of access to local and global information resources. Gateways and portals are seen as possible solutions. Describes the features of quality access via metadata and resource sharing within this framework, and how publishers and aggregators are assisting in the transformation to digital libraries. Identifies and discusses the features of a digital library and offers a definition. Recommends an integrated approach towards the provision of library automation, document management and digitizing/imaging expertise to provide a one‐stop shop for library managers and to facilitate the establishment of digital libraries.

Abstract

The computer software package CDS/ISIS is suitable for the storage and retrieval of structured, text‐oriented information, such as bibliographic descriptions. Versions exist for various hardware including IBM microcomputers and compatibles. The software is very attractive, mainly because it is powerful and because the producer, Unesco, normally fulfils requests to use it for free. Micro CDS/ISIS is reviewed in this paper which includes recent experience with Version 2.3.

The database, which is produced by Information Access Corporation (Los Altos, California), provides the same coverage as that company's two other databases, National Newspaper Index and Magazine Index, but in this case new material is added every day. It is specifically geared toward current awareness applications.

Abstract

Provides a summary of the main topics of the European Library Automation Group (ELAG) conference in Trondheim, Norway, June 2004. Notes that the title of the conference was "Interoperability: New Challenges and Solutions", but it was clear that both for organizers and participants many of the current challenges of interoperability lie in library portals. States that many of the papers presented dealt with some aspect of portal design or implementation, and others touched on issues that were clearly relevant to portal applications. Several other papers focused on different aspects of information processing in the host country

Abstract

The desirability of electronic document delivery systems has been argued for years and the reasons for the slow progress of the idea are discussed. An explanation of the technical background is provided followed by some examples of electronic means of information distribution such as facsimile and disc‐based systems. Some experimental projects are described and the article concludes with a description of document image processing systems used for business purposes which have a number of features in common with delivery systems.
