Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to improve the tribological properties of hydrodynamic journal bearing via surface texture, as well as the wear and antifriction mechanisms of textured bearing were represented. It provides a design direction for solving the tribological problem of rotor-bearing system.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the variation of surface texture parameters (e.g. texture diameter, d; area density, sp; and depth, hp) were analyzed based on finite difference method. The optimal surface texture parameters were obtained by designing orthogonal experiments, and the relationship between friction and wear properties and microstructure was studied via combining electron probe microanalyzer, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer and friction and wear testing machine.

Findings

Dimensionless film pressure P increased as the d increased, whereas P first increased and then decreased as the sp and hp increased, and the maximum P was got as sp = 15% and hp = 25 µm, respectively. The friction coefficient of textured surface with suitable parameters was effectively reduced and the textured surface with the best antifriction effect was 5#. Orthogonal experimental design analysis showed that the influence order of factors on friction coefficient was as follows: sp > sp × d > d > d × hp > hp > sp × hp and the friction coefficient first decreased and then increased as the sp, d and hp increased. In addition, the friction and wear mechanism of textured bearing were three body friction and abrasive wear as the matrix structure and hard phase were a single β phase and Mn5Si3, respectively. While the antifriction mechanism of textured surface was able to store abrasive particles and secondary hydrodynamic lubrication was formed.

Originality/value

The sample with reasonable texture parameter design can effectively reduce friction and wear of hydrodynamic journal bearing without reducing the service life, which can provide a reference for improving the lubrication performance and mechanical efficiency of rotor-bearing system.

Abstract

Purpose

Industrial Internet Platform (IIP) integrates various new information technologies and forms an ecosystem around the platform. It promotes the optimization of resource elements and the collaboration of industrial chains, driving traditional enterprises towards comprehensive Digital Transformation (DT). This research explores the mechanisms through which the Industrial Internet Platform enables the digital development of enterprises.

Design/methodology/approach

This study constructs an Industrial Internet Platform Ecosystem (IIPE) from an ecosystem perspective. Later, a systematic literature review was used to design a specific path for IIPE to enable enterprises' DT from the perspective of basic activities and organizational structure.

Findings

The results indicate that in IIPE there is a hierarchical structure in the enabling mechanism of IIP. Firstly, the IIPE enhances the digital capabilities of enterprises through the foundational activities of DT. Secondly, the IIPE promotes the adjustment in enterprise structure and strategic orientation for adapting to the DT.

Research limitations/implications

More and more enterprises enter the IIPE and grow together in the ecosystem. As a result, the overall level of digitalization of the industry can be enhanced and all enterprises realize the expected benefits of DT.

Originality/value

Existing research recognized the role of IIP in enterprise management or production processes, but the DT of enterprises is not a single aspect. This research elaborates the mechanism of comprehensive DT of enterprises from the perspective of ecosystems and discovers specific paths for DT.

Abstract

Purpose

Merchant guild culture derives from business practices associated with medieval and early modern merchant guilds. This study aims to investigate the nexus between merchant guild culture and firm internationalization as well as the factors that moderate this nexus.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the distribution of the ten merchant guilds in China and data on Chinese listed companies, this study uses the geographical proximity-based method to measure the intensity of merchant guild culture, which is the nearest distance between the ten merchant guilds’ origins and each firm’s registered address.

Findings

This study provides robust evidence that merchant guild culture positively relates to the degree of firm internationalization. It also documents that this nexus is stronger for firms with overseas background executives and those situated in highly marketized regions.

Practical implications

The findings of this study have valuable implications for both governments and firms. Governments can leverage local cultures to promote the internationalization of domestic firms, particularly in emerging economies with rich cultural heritage. Firms can further enhance their internationalization efforts by hiring more executives with overseas backgrounds.

Originality/value

This study advances the imprinting literature, provides a novel perspective on the antecedents of firm internationalization and expands research on the contemporary value of historical business culture.
