Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

The first paper ever published on microprocessors described the device as the “re‐configurable” circuit. This conveys the simplest, but most important feature of the microprocessor, namely that by changing the software a device can be tailored to fit a wide range of applications — from a simple light switch control to the central processing unit of a computer. This versatility of microelectronic devices, combined with their falling price, decreasing size and exponentially increasing power makes inevitable their widespread application. Indeed, it can be predicted with reasonable confidence that by the end of the century the pervasiveness of the “silicon chip” will be the defining characteristic of an advanced society.

Recent research has suggested that the present diets prescribed for diabetics, while satisfactory up to a point, are nevertheless, not the most suitable, given today's sedentary lifestyle.

Abstract

Argues that, whether referring to economic or bounded rationality, the notion of rationality is meaningful only in a specific cultural context. Proposes, by analogy, a culture‐driven approach for rationally managing the human resource function in a global environment. Shows how culture provides additional explanatory power for human resource management (HRM) practices – beyond what is a accounted for by political or economic structures – by comparing the USA with one of its major trading partners, Taiwan and with the People′s Republic of China (PRC), a country with which the USA has had a rather checkered relationship, on their commonly‐used practices of selection, reward systems, performance appraisal and participative management. Makes suggestions on how to reconcile cultural differences in transplanting HRM practices to China.

Abstract

The earliest arguments as the leaders of the newly independent developing countries began to plan for accelerated growth and resulting reduction of poverty – what I have called the progressive and activist ‘pull up’ strategy for reducing poverty, in contrast to the conservative characterization of it as a passive ‘trickle down strategy’ suggesting that the Earl of Nottingham and his vassals are eating leg of lamb and venison at a high table, with crumbs falling to the dogs and serfs below – involved answering a basic economic-philosophical question: How would integration into the world economy on dimensions such as trade, equity investment (i.e. multinationals), migration and technology (e.g. intellectual property protection) work? Would, as the opponents argued, integration into the world economy on these different dimensions lead to disintegration of the national economy; or would it help instead?

Abstract

In foods derived from plant sources, the make‐up of the actual cell walls in the living plant determines the fibre content and the texture of the vegetable, fruit or cereal dish. Fibre, it is important to remember, is not a single substance but a complex mixture of plant cell wall components. Fibre derived from one plant food is often different from that derived from another and cells within the same plant supply different fibre constituents.

Abstract

The Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University has created a working electronic library and has made significant changes in services and staff responsibilities to address users' evolving needs. This article presents an overview of these changes, after discussing the development of electronic libraries at Mann and elsewhere. The increased usage that Mann's collections have received as the electronic library has been developed is also described.
