Design/methodology/approach

A personal interview held on July, 16, 2024.

Jeremy Sampson highlights the importance of scenario planning and strategic foresight and its evolution. Sampson elaborates on his personal career journey, the approach of the Travel Foundation and how this informed a strong focus on the ground impact as well as systemic change.

Originality/value

The interview provides unique insights into the motivation of Sampson and The Travel Foundation and their approaches, aiming to be the change makers in the tourism industry. A role that is very much needed, perhaps particularly from a third sector organization such as The Travel Foundation.

Abstract

The Bureau of Economics in the Federal Trade Commission has a three-part role in the Agency and the strength of its functions changed over time depending on the preferences and ideology of the FTC’s leaders, developments in the field of economics, and the tenor of the times. The over-riding current role is to provide well considered, unbiased economic advice regarding antitrust and consumer protection law enforcement cases to the legal staff and the Commission. The second role, which long ago was primary, is to provide reports on investigations of various industries to the public and public officials. This role was more recently called research or “policy R&D”. A third role is to advocate for competition and markets both domestically and internationally. As a practical matter, the provision of economic advice to the FTC and to the legal staff has required that the economists wear “two hats,” helping the legal staff investigate cases and provide evidence to support law enforcement cases while also providing advice to the legal bureaus and to the Commission on which cases to pursue (thus providing “a second set of eyes” to evaluate cases). There is sometimes a tension in those functions because building a case is not the same as evaluating a case. Economists and the Bureau of Economics have provided such services to the FTC for over 100 years proving that a sub-organization can survive while playing roles that sometimes conflict. Such a life is not, however, always easy or fun.

Abstract

The vast majority of contemporary social scientists have distanced themselves from moral reflection and the academic disciplines that engage in it. Throughout his long career Philip Selznick took a different path, engaging deeply with the moral content of the concepts he employed. This paper argues that he had good reasons to do so. Value neutrality in social research can fatally sever inquiry’s connection to the practical concerns that originally motivated it, and it can distort our understanding of those concerns by recasting them in a scientific mold. To make this case I draw from a long tradition of philosophical thought about the relationship between facts and values, and I illustrate it by examining the limitations of recent social science research about procedural justice in organizations and the order maintenance function of the police.

Abstract

This research focuses on the financial literacy level, stock participation, and financial behavior among millennials in Indonesia.

Logit regression analysis is performed to analyze the relationship among tested variables. The weighted percentage analysis is also used to portray a response in relation to the sample of respondents. Such an analysis is widely used in Indonesia.

Findings suggest that for basic and advanced financial literacy level topics, millennials with higher education level and profession related to economy are the ones who have high basic financial literacy level. However, as respondents become older and/or get married, the basic financial literacy level tends to decrease. When the questions are advanced, the education level is statistically significant. If they have more available money to spend than others, then they tend to have a higher advanced financial literacy level. However, the advanced financial literacy level of female respondents who are older and/or have children tends to decrease. Subsequently, the relationship between financial literacy level and stock market participation is evident when millennials have a high basic and/or advanced financial literacy level, suggesting that they tend to participate in the stock market. Overconfident millennials or those who focus on learning economics also likely participate in the stock market.

Abstract

Theories of crime and delinquency tend to be discipline‐specific and are dominated by psychological, sociological, and economic approaches. The focus of this article will be on an economic approach to understanding criminal behavior and the design of effective policies for dealing with the problem of criminal activity. From an economic perspective, crime is rational behavior, a choice that is made by people in deciding how best to spend their time. In making the choice, individuals consider the benefits and costs of using their time in different ways: working legally, working illegally, or not working at all. This article examines the correlations between economic variables and a broad measure of crime, the property crime rate. The results reveal that even a very parsimonious model, which includes the poverty rate, gross domestic product, and drug seizures, can explain nearly 75 percent of the variation in the crime rate over an 18‐year period.

Abstract

In the UK, major IT public procurement projects regularly fail at significant cost to the taxpayer. The prevalence of these failures presents scholars with a challenge; to both understand their genesis and to facilitate learning and prevention. Functional approaches have revealed numerous determinants of failure ranging from procurement specifications to risk escalation, but true and definitive causes remain elusive. However, since failure is not itself an absolute truth, but rather a concept which is reached when support is withdrawn, the survival of a project depends on there being sufficient belief in its legitimacy. We use critical hermeneutic methods and the conceptual lens of legitimacy to reveal powerful legitimating influences that enable and constrain action, but which are not analysed in the retrospective government inquiries that determine lessons learned.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the profiles of behaviours and adaptive functioning in the UK children and young people with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Design/methodology/approach

Data of 106 participants registered from 2005 to 2015 were extracted from a clinic database. In total, 99 individuals with confirmed prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), aged from 5 to 25 years, were analysed using scaled scores of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-Second Edition (VABS-II), and the Developmental Behaviour Checklist-Primary Carer Version (DBC-P) and Teacher Version (DBC-T). Differences due to age, gender, IQ and family structure (adopted/living with birth parents) were also explored.

Findings

The mean composite adaptive behaviour score on the VABS-II was classified as “low” at 68.2 (SD=8.5), with the socialisation domain being the most impaired. Significantly lower VABS-II composite scores were found in individuals with lower IQ’s, older ages and in males. Disruptive behaviours were the most commonly observed on the DBCs, whereas primary carers scored significantly higher than teachers across all subscales. IQ, age and gender were not associated with the total percentile scores of both DBCs. Adoption made no differences compared to living with birth parents.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies would replicate these findings in a larger sample size including individuals without PAE and those living with birth parents.

Originality/value

This study is the first UK report that examines this issue.
