Abstract

From a modest start‐up in Ohio only fifteen years ago, with the initial LEXIS legal research service, Mead Data Central (MDC) has grown and evolved into multiple services using a massive databank of legal, business and general news and information that continues to grow every day. The company is now a major player in the rapidly developing electronic publishing industry, with offices in thirty cities, 1300 employees and international partners in Britain and France. It's customer list has grown at a compound annual rate of 55% during the last few years, and over 250,000 users have been trained.

Abstract

The best‐selling book Megatrends, written by John Naisbitt, has been cited in numerous library and information science publications and talks since its appearance in 1982 Megatrends was bound to capture the attention of the librarians, since it boldly proclaims on page one that no shift “is more subtle, yet more explosive” than the change from an industrial to an information society. It has further appeal because many of the changes documented in Megatrends can be observed in libraries and the institutions and organizations they serve; moreover, the trends provide a framework from which to assess the status and direction of the information professions. This article will examine the several megatrends as they apply to the electronic library and will suggest appropriate plans of action.

Abstract

Connect is an intelligent terminal package developed specifically for use with online information retrieval and electronic mail services. It allows complete flexibility in both uploading and downloading information, including logon procedures and prepared search profiles. Capture of data is simple and all host products can be emulated, including Flow Control. Ten user definable keys, independent of hardware, are available for storing information such as logon procedures. An unlimited number of Host Profiles can be used to store the values of User Keys, protocols, baud rate, etc. All communications parameters are controlled by Connect with no need to use separate utilities such as Setup, Configure, etc., and can be stored in each Host Profile. A unique feature of Connect is a usage Log, which enables details and ownership of search sessions to be stored on disk in a format compatible with many applications packages, such as Dbasell and Infostar, for the production of itemised activity reports and analyses. Connect can also be used to transfer files, including programmes, from micro to micro, and is available for most common machines.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine an experimental neo-Herbartian and Frobelian curriculum Work in the kindergarten: An Australian programme based on the life and customs of the Australian Black published by Martha Simpson in 1909.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses both primary and secondary sources to understand the context of production and reception of the settler narratives advocated for use in the curriculum. Simpson's curriculum and other primary literary texts provide case study examples.

Findings

The research found that colonial and imperial literary texts provided a departure point for learning activities, enabling the positive construction of white Australian identity and the supplantation of Aboriginal people in a post-federation kindergarten setting.

Originality/value

By considering the role of imperial and colonial narratives in post-federation experimental curriculum, this paper offers insight into the role such narratives played in the formation of Australian national identity.

Abstract

There is a growing interest on how critical perspectives can help us understand family businesses. Current literature suggests that critical reflection is needed in aspects such as conflict, fear, and emotions. In this chapter, we argue that the use of a critical perspective illuminates the intricate complexities of family business behavior and that a critical discussion around fear, which is conceptualized as both an inhibitor and a motivator for business, plays a significant role in the dark side of family business. To advance understanding, we review recent conversations that can help us understand better the role of fear; how does this impact on resilience? And, how do feelings and emotions impact family firms? In our review, we argue that perspectives that focus on specific tangible resources (e.g. financial) are limited to explain how families in business may deal with fear. A critical perspective suggests that three areas merit further attention: fear of failure, effects of failure, and the intersection between entrepreneurial learning and the effects of fear in the dark side of family businesses. By contextualizing critical approaches, we provide insight for researchers, policymakers, and those operating family businesses alike.

Abstract

LIBRARIES, in common with all other public institutions, must be faced with the uncertainty that arises from the inconclusive results of the recent General Election. We are not intimately concerned with parties and it is held that librarians should eschew them altogether as they have duties to, are the servants of, all. This consideration applies more to the public librarian than to the special one. Be that as it may, the change must postpone, we imagine, our chances of the new Public Libraries Act, because a new general election is probable in a very short time. Meanwhile, there is always uncertainty as to public expenditure and, although we do not expect anything drastic, it is hardly likely that our centenary year will see the beginnings of the library progress for which some had hoped. Most local rate‐budgets have, fortunately, been fixed by now.
