The Conference on Anodised Aluminium, organised by the Aluminium Development Association and held in the new Cripps Hall at Nottingham University from September 12–14, was probably the first of its kind in the world and attracted nearly 300 delegates. Eighteen papers were discussed. In the following pages abstracts and conclusions from most of the papers are given, emphasis being placed on the corrosion aspects of the subject.

Abstract

OF all modern engineering constructions, it is difficult to imagine a unit the components of which are more liable to general wear than the present‐day internal combustion and compression ignition engines. The performances demanded of aero‐engines in particular, have instigated the enormous amount of research and investigation that has been made on the problem of reducing metallic wear under various conditions of temperature, load, atmosphere, etc. The importance of this problem is manifest when one reflects that the great majority of the components of the aero‐engine (with the exception of details, nuts, bolts, pins, etc.) are subject to continual wear in one form or another. In other words, the serviceable life of any engine is largely a function of the degree to which particular forms of wear have been minimized. While the question of adequate lubrication is undoubtedly of vital importance in reducing friction, the primary causes of wear are dependent upon the properties and surface conditions of the materials at their respective working temperatures. For the majority of components, the selection of material must necessarily be mainly decided by such considerations as yield point, compression strength, fatigue range, specific tenacity, maximum stress, resistance to scaling, thermal expansion, etc., and the question of wear is reckoned rather as a problem for which the metallurgist will find a treatment which can be suitably applied to the material. Thus we have seen evolved the many processes for surface‐hardening, and numerous anti‐friction materials, etc. It is interesting to review the present position of the practical applications of the science of reducing metallic friction, and to note tendencies of future developments.

Abstract

These companion volumes are designed to cover a university engineering course in mechanics, but they will have a welcome extending outside university circles. The needs of the engineer have been kept in mind throughout, with the result that important subjects such as frameworks, and especially space frames, in statics, and vibrations in dynamics, receive especially full treatment. The examples, too, of which there are more than three hundred in each volume, have been carefully chosen, not only to illustrate the theory, but also to have a practical interest. Students often find that their greatest difficulty in solving problems lies in marshalling the known facts in a mathematical form suitable for solution; and in the many worked examples the authors have taken great care to explain this process. The worked examples have also been used to introduce subjects which are later fully developed in the text, or which are not of sufficient importance to justify special treatment.

Abstract

In this chapter, we have proposed that an important approach to understanding occupational stress and well-being among racial and ethnic minority workers is to integrate the occupational health disparities paradigm into work stress research. As such, the current chapter provides a state-of-the-art review of the existing literature on occupational health disparities for Latinos, Asian Americans, and African Americans. Each of the three sections has highlighted the unique occupational health problems encountered by the specific racial and ethnic group as well as the research and policy gaps. We end with a series of recommendations for future research.

Abstract

Using basket analysis, a methodology is presented to investigate the healthiness of particular household diets. The analysis was applied to “Homescan” panel data relating to 11,000 households. This breakdown was then cross‐related to geodemographic classifications using “MOSAIC” groups. The degree or extent of unhealthiness was determined on the basis of percentage swing away from recommended dietary patterns in terms of indicator foods belonging to five groups (dairy, meat, vegetables, fruit and bread and cereals). The consumption of fats was also monitored. It was found that 8 per cent of households had diets that were labelled “unhealthy”, based on standard recommendations for healthy eating. A further 20 per cent of households had “relatively unhealthy” diets. The majority of these households were shown to belong to the “suburban semis” group in the MOSAIC classification.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate relationships among cognitive appraisal of work demands, coping, positive and negative affect, and job satisfaction using structural equation modeling (SEM). Gender differences are also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 659 registered veterinarians respond to a postal survey investigating appraisal, coping, and outcomes in the context of work‐related stressors. Veterinarians are selected as the study group due to the high reported rates of stress within the profession.

Findings

The hypothesized model is a good fit to the data. Patterns of appraisal and coping are evident which meant that a potentially stressful work demand could result in positive rather than negative outcomes. The more a demand is seen as a challenge the more use is made of task‐focused coping and the less use is made of avoidance, with higher levels of positive affect and job satisfaction. In contrast, threat appraisals are associated with more avoidance, more negative affect, and reduced job satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

The paper employs a cross‐sectional self‐report design from which it is not possible to infer causal relationships among variables. The sample comprises veterinarians employed within New Zealand and it remains to be seen whether the findings can be replicated in other groups and in other countries and cultures. Longitudinal research is needed to establish how patterns of appraisal and coping develop over time and the concurrent and lagged effects of work demands on outcomes.

Practical implications

Differences exist in the ways in which individuals appraise and cope with work demands. Primary appraisal is an assessment of whether demands match the resources available to manage them. Appropriate management strategies may involve reducing demands, increasing resources, or increasing perceptions of resource availability and building effective coping strategies which are appropriate to the situation. Assessment of the causes and consequences of work demands is required and it is important to identify and build on aspects of work which are satisfying and rewarding.

Originality/value

Few models of work relate stress and well‐being to date have considered how work demands can give rise to both positive and negative outcomes. This paper has explored how processes of appraisal and coping can have a significant impact on how demands are experienced. A strength of the study is that differences are not due to differences in measures between gender groups as measurement invariance is established. Differences are, therefore, due to actual differences amongst groups on the hypothesized relationships based on theory.

Abstract

Consumer behavior has evolved because of technological development. Nowadays, consumers carry out the different stages of the decision-making process by combining multiple devices which has been defined as multi, cross and omnichannel behavior. These behaviors have attracted the attention of academics and become a hot topic in literature. As a result, vast amounts of studies on the subject need to be revised and clarified. Thus, the aim of this chapter is to synthetize the primary academic literature that analyzes multi, cross and omnichannel behavior from the consumer point of view. To do that, first, the main concepts (multi, cross and omnichannel) and their differences are clarified. Second, the major findings of channel mix literature regarding the topics, channel scope and theories are exposed and described. Third, the opportunities and future lines of research are presented. This chapter contributes to the literature by clarifying the conceptualization of multi, cross and omnichannel behaviors; offering a complete picture of the main topics, channel approaches and theories addressed in channel mix literature; and presenting future research opportunities and open research questions in a channel mix context that could serve as a starting point to build further research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a deeper insight on the psychological mechanism of customer forgiveness viewed from a cross cultural perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on the cognitive appraisal theory, this paper relates forgiveness cognitive, emotional and motivational patterns with differences in cultural values' orientations.

Findings

The insights from this paper suggest that idiocentric customers are more likely to adopt problem solving strategies when they decide to forgive, whereas allocentric ones tend to regulate their emotional responses to their environment such as expressing benevolence and goodwill, as they are more sensitive to maintaining connectedness within group members.

Research limitations/implications

Albeit conceptual and exploratory in nature, this paper is intended as a beginning for further empirical validation and theoretical refinement. The paper contends that forgiveness is a dynamic, interactive process that should be investigated with different sequential orders. Furthermore, as customer forgiveness is related to time, longitudinal studies are more appropriate to test the proposed model.

Practical implications

Firms serving international markets as well as multiethnic ones would have advantage to understand cultural differences in shaping customer forgiveness. This is relevant to conceive efficient marketing strategies aiming at managing interpersonal conflicts with wronged customers and promoting benevolence and goodwill.

Originality/value

Little is known about customer forgiveness. This paper adds a new insight by examining cultural effects on forgiveness process, allowing for a more comprehensive view of customer forgiveness triggers.
