Abstract

Subject area

Impact investing, Social entrepreneurship.

Study level/applicability

MBA, EMBA, Executive Education.

Case overview

CareCross Health describes the impact due diligence leading up to an investment into CareCross Health by impact investor Palm Capital. The case follows the protagonist, Caitlin Stevens, CEO of Palm Capital, as she identifies CareCross Health as a potential investment target, performs an initial screening of the company and visits the company and its sites as part of an in-depth impact due diligence.

Expected learning outcomes

By the end of this case, the student should be able to consider the critical steps associated with conducting an impact due diligence; understand the challenges associated with conducting an impact due diligence, with a particular focus on due diligence in an emerging market scenario; analyse a potential impact investment, in this case CareCross Health, and make a preliminary recommendation on whether the investment is viable from an impact perspective; identify the trade-offs between private sector and public sector provision of services to low-income groups, and consider unintended consequences in analysing the impact of a social enterprise; and prepare possible scenarios and weigh the potential outcomes of various arrangements to ensure alignment of investor objectives.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the coping strategies employed by people of color in response to racial discrimination and examines how cultural norms inform these strategies.

Methodology

In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 34 Black and Asian Americans about their experiences with racial discrimination.

Findings

Findings reveal that participants cope through humor, seeking social support on social media, from family and friends, and through avoidant coping strategies. Seeking social support from empathetic others, especially when they shared the same racial background as participants, contributes to feelings of comfort, sanity, and a sense of community. Group differences emerge in seeking family support with Black Americans more likely to seek parental support, likely because of racial socialization practices by their parents that prepared them for experiencing bias. Asian Americans preferred talking to siblings or cousins, citing a cultural gap between them and their parents.

Research Implications

The study underscores the importance of considering the quality of social support, not just its use, as a buffer against harms related to discrimination.

Social Implications

Racial discrimination is a routine experience for many people of color. This study demonstrates how the type of coping strategy matters for coping with the distress that often accompanies these experiences.

Originality

In contrast to monoracial-focused studies, this research demonstrates the convergence and divergence of coping strategies among different racial groups.

Abstract

MODERN technology is increasingly being used to solve communications problems and increase business efficiency. In the area of internal corporate communications television technology is now being applied to assist in disseminating information to the workforce. One company, aircraft manufacturer British Aerospace, has installed its own Private Television Network at its Prestwick facility as a key component of its internal communications strategy.

Abstract

‐ One of the consequences of the present long period of economic depression, which has been felt with particular severity by most Third World countries, has been a necessary critical reassessement of many development strategies. Especially in Africa, the balance sheet between efforts and results has not been very encouraging. The massive industrialization programmes and the large projects of the last three decades have neither helped to achieve a more competitive production nor have introduced widespread prosperity, as hoped. Gradually the accent is now shifting toward new “soft options”, one of which is tourism. We remember that only 15–20 years ago many African governments or international development agencies were still considering tourism as a marginal economic activity, to be left to poor nations without much prospects for industrialization. Since then much has changed and ‐ especially in the present post‐industrial economies ‐ tourism and the whole gamut of other leisure industries have become one of the most dynamic fields of expansion, even in the developing world.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to develop a greyscale “painting system” by enabling the physical reproduction of digital texture maps on arbitrary 3D objects selectively exposing “pixels” of photographic emulsion with a robot mounted light source.

Design/methodology/approach

After reviewing existing methods of “decorating” 3D components, the properties of photographic emulsion are introduced and the nature of the rendering process' pixels discussed. A proposed path planning algorithm, used to derive both the robot's movement and the exposure times directly from a VRML representation, is then presented.

Findings

Results obtained from successfully rendering images on the surface of a test object are presented.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations of current system include the overall process time and the inability to handle objects with concave geometry.

Originality/value

The system requires no bespoke production tooling and fills an automation gap in rapid prototyping and manufacturing technology that is currently occupied by hand painting.

Abstract

GENERAL MANAGER Harry Murray was telling me that his Imperial Hotel is the acme of conference centres when I noticed on his reservations chart a booking for the launch of a new Rolls Royce. It seemed an appropriate even for what undoubtedly is the Rolls Royce of business venues.

Abstract

The winding, climbing roads of North Derbyshire still bore traces of the year's early snowfall, with mud‐splashed, hard‐packed drifts remaining by the roadside, when Circuit World visited LeaRonal on the outskirts of Buxton in December. At 1007 feet, Buxton is one of the highest towns in England. A spa and holiday resort, it is situated in the picturesque Peak District with its characteristic rocky crags, rugged moorlands and wooded dales. Britain's first national park—the Peak District National Park—covers some 540 square miles and it is at the edge of this leisure area that LeaRonal's High Peak Laboratories facility is located.

Abstract

The influence of all stakeholder groups on the values, beliefs, policies, decisions and management of organisations is on the rise and here to stay. This paper examines the factors driving stakeholder power, and draws on a number of recent examples and the lessons learned. It proposes steps that organisations can take to manage the communication needs of stakeholders. Prioritising the challenges and balancing and integrating the corporate response are the main themes.
