Abstract
Discusses the pattern of the regional distribution in the Chinese economy of Direct foreign investment (DFI) in the context of the open‐door policy and the regional difference in investment environments. Presents a regression analysis on the effects of DFI on the economic growth in the eastern and western regions, using pooled time‐series and cross‐section data for 16 provinces over a seven‐year period (1986‐92). Discusses other important factors influencing regional economic development including rural industry development, differential growth of fixed capital investment and exports, and domestic capital flow from the western region to the eastern region. A case study of the effect of DFI on the intra‐provincial economic inequality in Guangdong Province is presented and some conclusions and policy implications are drawn.

Abstract
The economic boom and liberalization make China a new focus of international investments by multinational corporations (MNCs). How to enter this huge market and what entry mode should be taken, remain inconclusive. This paper is a study of the entry modes of MNCs into China from socioeconomic perspectives. It provides a theoretical discussion and also an empirical investigation of MNCs’ entry modes in the Chinese particular institutional and business environments. It examines the impact of sociocultural differences, the technology intensity of investment projects and regional factors on MNCs’ entry mode choice.

Abstract
Multinational enterprises (MNEs) play a dominant role in the international business (IB) literature. Traditionally, by far the majority of IB studies deal with issues at the micro level of the individual MNE, or at the meso level of a sample of individual MNEs in industries. This paper focuses on the impact of MNE behavior through foreign direct investment (FDI) on a country’s international trade, and vice versa. In so doing, this study responds to a recent plea for more macro‐level studies in IB into the effect of MNE behavior on the macroeconomic performance of countries as a whole, particularly developing and emerging economies. In the current study, we focus on the largest developing or emerging economy of all: China. Applying sophisticated econometric techniques, we unravel the causality and direction of FDI‐trade linkages for the Chinese economy in the 1980‐2003 period.

Abstract
Purpose
The International Journal of Social Economics has completed 45 years of its publication in 2018; as a part of this recognition, this paper aims to present an overview of the IJSE through bibliometric analysis of its contents from 1974–2018.
Design/methodology/approach
Using data from Scopus database, the prominence of the research is assessed by studying and analyzing annual publication, and citation structure, most cited papers in IJSE, documents most cited by IJSE, most productive author, institution and country in IJSE with their temporal analysis and the thematic structure of the journal through keyword co-occurrence analysis. Additionally, a graphical representation of the bibliometric data using VOSviewer is presented in the paper.
Findings
Major findings show that IJSE has grown in productivity, as well as stature as the number of articles published each year, and the citation counts are increasing. Major themes published in the journal include poverty, social economics sustainable development, developing country, religion, economic theory, etc.
Originality/value
This is the first article providing an overall summary of the research work published in the journal.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to detect the bolt loosening under conditions of impact loading with a low-cost self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator sensor.
Design/methodology/approach
In this work, an Al/PTFE-based triboelectric nanogenerator (AP-TENG) is used as a sensor. A pendulum impact device and a force hammer were used to apply the impact loads. The bolt status and the applied torque can be monitored under impact loading conditions by using the output voltage results of the AP-TENGs.
Findings
The output voltage results of the current AP-TENG sensor under five different bolt torques, i.e. from 0.5 to 2.5 N m, were measured. The measurements revealed that a thicker buffer layer significantly contributed to the generation of higher voltages. Besides, the AP-TENG was also used to light ten commercial green LEDs in series, and the brightness of the LEDs was high enough even for the daytime, which showed that it can be used as the alarm device. In addition, a sudden loose test was also carried out, and the obvious voltage spikes can be seen without the external impact. The force hammer impact tests have expanded the application scope of the AP-TENG in the bolt loosening detection.
Originality/value
The bolt loosening monitoring is important and useful for the safe operation. The application of TENG technology for detecting bolt loosening remains relatively unexplored. In addition, ten commercial green LEDs can be driven by the AP-TENG sensor, which can be used for the early warning of the bolted loosening status.
