Abstract
Discusses a research project undertaken to determine the effect of internal climatic conditions on corrosion of steel reinforced concrete. Examines the aims, method used, data‐analysis, and the results. Concludes that different parts of a building experience different climates, leading to different levels of carbonation and corrosion.

Abstract
This paper considers the effects of the shape of supermarket retail floor space on patronage turnover in Hong Kong. From a sample of stores it was observed that many possessed unique and irregular shapes, and some traded on more than one floor level. It was determined that the factors of complexity of shape and the dual‐floor trading concept had no effect on the patronage turnover. The conclusion drawn is that the most likely reasons for these results rest with customer familiarity and tolerance, allied to small shopping loads. Details of the criteria for store selection for inclusion in the survey are given. Data collected were subjected to statistical testing to determine the extent of correlation.

Abstract
Many factors can have an effect on the patronage turnover of retail stores. While there is a concentration on the more obvious aspects such as demography and site location, this paper examines the less publicised, but potentially important effects of in‐store factors. The methodology and findings of a research project encapsulating in‐store factors are discussed. It was found from the empirical evidence of the focus group, a supermarket chain in Hong Kong, that in terms of facilities, aspects of check‐out counter provision and frequency of refurbishment provided the greatest explanation for changes in patronage turnover.

Abstract
Describes research into the present position, involved parties and future outlook for property management in Hong Kong. The practice of property management follows traditional styles that can be observed in other developed countries. The property management industry represents a very small, but essential part of the overall property sector. The major executants in Hong Kong are: property management agents in the private sector; statutory bodies responsible for the management of properties owned and developed by the public sector; and participatory building management organizations.

Abstract
Discusses the problem of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete experienced in buildings in Hong Kong. Outlines the range of defects, including different forms of spalling, loss of cover, major cracking and loss of cross‐sectional area of reinforcement. Explains the mechanism of corrosion of steel in concrete, detailing chloride attack, electrochemical reaction and oxygen infiltration. Discusses the effect of the Hong Kong climate on corrosion, blaming humidity levels and temperature. Suggests the installation of temperature and humidity sensors at selected locations in multi‐storey buildings.

Abstract
The aim was to determine the number of referrals of people aged 55 and over to three forensic and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) services in Scotland, and to describe their demographic, criminological and psychiatric characteristics. Of a total of 1838 referrals, 63 (3.4%) were aged 55 and over. Of these, 35 were referred for court reports or prison assessment and half had been charged with violent or sexual offences. Most were diagnosed as suffering from a psychiatric disorder at the time of assessment, 11 (31.4%) were admitted for further assessment. There were a further 28 admissions to PICU beds. Older adults form a small but important minority of referrals to forensic and PICU services. A single case register would aid further study in this area. Further exploration of the clinical needs of these patients would be useful.

Abstract
This chapter explores how quality is assessed in craft beer through describing tastes and aromas in relationship to categories of beer style. Drawing on documentary sources, it explores the development and formalisation of definitions of beer styles, and the development of the contemporary language used to describe and assess taste. It then ethnographically explores how these are combined in the practice of craft beer judging at a competition through a novel assemblage of different methods. The empirical work contributes novel methods for exploring tasting practices, detailed ethnographic description of beer judging and an exploration of how the organisation of style guides and taste descriptions have contributed to defining and assessing quality in craft beer.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper identifies the importance of key factors influencing the quality of CBD office buildings. An office building quality index (BQI) is constructed and its relationship with net rent assessed.
Design/methodology/approach
The importance of 30 property‐specific CBD office building attributes on the quality of CBD office buildings is assessed using a survey of property industry respondents. The analytical hierarchy process procedure is used to determine weights for each of these attributes to construct an office BQI.
Findings
Findings indicate that functionality (31.0 per cent), services (22.6 per cent), access and circulation (16.4 per cent), presentation (13.1 per cent), management (11.5 per cent) and amenities (5.4 per cent) are the order of importance in assessing office building quality. There was found to be a strong functional relationship between office building quality and net rent.
Practical implications
A better understanding of the factors influencing CBD office building quality is determined, with a more effective and practical office BQI developed for benchmarking purposes in property portfolios.
Originality/value
Importance of CBD office building attributes is determined and a new CBD office BQI is developed for practical implementation in the property industry.
