Abstract

In an effort to save energy, that is so necessary in these days of high electrical costs per unit, a new impetus has been given to an old idea: the factory suggestion box. If properly organised, and with suitable awards for sensible and workable ideas, such a scheme can be beneficial and can reap good dividends.

Abstract

Young people without enough to occupy them are tempted to get into mischief. The author looks into some of the forms this mischief can take and gives advice on how to deal with them. The warning is particularly apt at this time when employers are being encouraged to increase the number of unemployed school leavers they take on.

Abstract

The right sort of relations. It is a long‐standing complaint of training officers that there are all too few films available on sales training in a retail environment. Too often training presentations are compelled to show American films on salesmanship, not only far removed from the retail world but demonstrating approaches which are unconvincing if not downright naive.

Abstract

High energy forming has supplemented the use of drop hammers, hydro‐presses and brake presses, and has the advantage of forming high‐strength alloys at rates of 100 ft./sec. compared to 5 ft./sec. with conventional techniques. One type of high energy forming used by the Ryan Aeronautical Co. is explosive forming which is economical and can be used to fabricate parts too difficult for normal methods. Closer tolerances can also be achieved and less expensive tooling materials can be used for die‐making.

Abstract

Mandeville's Fable of the Bees, ungenerously described by its author as a “rhapsody void of order and method”, actually developed several ideas about the functioning of markets that anticipate some of the concerns of contemporary subjectivist economics such as are expressed in the writings of the modern Austrian School. While it may be too much of an exaggeration to follow F.B. Kaye by declaring Mandeville a “founder” of laissez‐faire economics, it is also quite incorrect to reach the negative verdict of one recent author who concluded that Mandeville “did not advance free‐market economics on any issue”. Mandeville did advance economics in general (and free market economics, incidentally) when he emphasised how patterns of conduct that emerge from the clash of individual egos guided by the flattery of politicians often function to promote some degree of commodious social life that is especially enjoyed by those quick to condemn the conduct as “immoral”. This theme still has its adherents today. I shall group Mandeville's contributions among four overlapping subject headings as follows:

Abstract

Food has always been an attractive field for the eccentric, the holder of extraordinary views on dietetics and nutrition, the “ back‐to‐nature ” types, whose ideas of what happens to food after it has passed the mouth must be even more fantastic than their knowledge of food values generally. These fanatics invade other spheres, of course. There is the “ fresh air fiend,” who cannot distinguish between fresh air and piercing draughts, with the result that he (or she) scalps everyone unfortunate enough to be travelling in the same railway carriage, but there seems nothing to touch the food faddist. His views attract an inordinate amount of publicity. Sometimes these are based entirely on misconceptions, but more often have orthodox premises, but have become confused and distorted in the person's own process of reasoning.

Abstract

Purpose

The IBM Institute for Business Value, which has been conducting Global Chief Executive Officers studies for 15 years, has been reporting on CEO concerns about business and economic disruption and described their efforts to respond to it. But surprisingly, in the 2018 study CEOs also indicate that the shock of disruption is waning. Only 26 percent of the CEOs say new entrants are actually taking market share. 10; 10; 10;

Design/methodology/approach

This report is based on input from 2,148 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), who were interviewed as part of the 19th IBM Global C-suite Study. Both quantitative and qualitative responses were collected from 346 face-to-face meetings and 1,802 in-person phone interviews. To understand how top-performing organizations navigate disruption differently, IBM researchers applied cluster analysis to examine the approaches of three groups of CEOs – Reinventors,. Practitioners and Aspirationals. 10;

Findings

Most CEOs see the emergence of platforms and the growing importance of network economics – both scale and scope – as the crucial drivers of future growth.

Practical implications

Almost six in ten Reinventors co-create new products, services or experiences with their customers.

Originality/value

Today’s CEOs have learned to not only accommodate but embrace disruption. Anticipating and responding to sudden and dramatic change has become standard operating procedure. Chief executives from top performing businesses understand that success requires collaboration with partners within ecosystems and on platforms. Indeed, Checklists for leaders are included.

Abstract

THE structural design of a long range ballistic missile or a space rocket vehicle is an intriguing problem. It is hardly necessary to stress the importance of achieving as light a structure as possible, since any unnecessary increase of structural weight can severely affect its performance or result in a profound increase of its total weight. There is a dearth of published information on this subject, presumably because of security restrictions. Among the papers available, only Sechler dwells on the structural design consideration in any detail. We have therefore very few specific facts to guide us, and can only relate the problem to our aircraft design experience with commonsense.

Abstract

Based on Geoffrey Harcourt's Palgrave volumes, this review article attempts to picture how, in a Cambridge environment, Keynes's fragmentary monetary theory of production grew organically out of Marshall's equally fragmentary monetary theory of exchange. The dangers associated with Keynes's close links with Marshall are alluded to. Indeed, without taking account of the classical spirit of Sraffa's work, Keynes's monetary theory may quite easily be integrated into the Marshallian‐neoclassical framework of analysis. However, theorising, not literally, but in the spirit of Keynes and Sraffa, within a Ricardian‐Pasinettian framework of vertical integration, opens the way to a Classical‐Keynesian monetary theory of production.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to counter the view that Marshall was an opponent of the historical school. This false account has survived and prospered because it has fitted into more general conceptions of intellectual history, held by both orthodox and heterodox economists.

Design/methodology/approach

Marshall's affinity with the historical school is established by examining his writings and his relationship with historical school sympathisers in the UK.

Findings

It is established that Marshall regarded his work as building on historical school insights, and he repeatedly referred positively to the ideas of the German historical school. It is argued in this paper that Marshall's opposition to the historical school was confined to its anti‐theoretical wing, principally Cunningham. In other important respects Marshall's position was compatible with German and British historicism.

Originality/value

In preceding literature, Marshall's affinities with the historical school have been denied, unacknowledged, or unexplored.
