Abstract
High energy forming has supplemented the use of drop hammers, hydro‐presses and brake presses, and has the advantage of forming high‐strength alloys at rates of 100 ft./sec. compared to 5 ft./sec. with conventional techniques. One type of high energy forming used by the Ryan Aeronautical Co. is explosive forming which is economical and can be used to fabricate parts too difficult for normal methods. Closer tolerances can also be achieved and less expensive tooling materials can be used for die‐making.
