Abstract
Purpose
Although, numerous optimization algorithms have been devoted to construct an electrical ladder network model (ELNM), they suffer from some frail points such as insufficient accuracy as well as the majority of them are unconstrained, which result in optimal solutions that violate certain security operational constraints. For this purpose, this paper aims to propose a flexible-constraint coyote optimization algorithm; the novelty lies in these points: penalty function is introduced in the objective function to discard any unfeasible solution, an advanced constraint handling technique and empirical relationship between the physical estimated parameters and their natural frequencies.
Design/methodology/approach
Frequency response analysis (FRA) is very significant for transformer winding diagnosis. Interpreting results of a transformer winding FRA is quite challenging. This paper proposes a new methodology to synthesize a nearly unique ELNM physically and electrically coupled for power transformer winding, basing on K-means and metaheuristic algorithm. To this end, the K-means method is used to cluster the setting of control variables, including the self-mutual inductances/capacitances, and the resistances parameters. Afterward, metaheuristic algorithm is applied to determine the cluster centers with high precision and efficiency.
Findings
FRA is performed on a power transformer winding model. Basing on the proposed methodology, the prior knowledge in selecting the initial guess and search space is avoided and the global solution is ensured. The performance of the abovementioned methodology is compared using evaluation expressions to verify its feasibility and accuracy.
Originality/value
The proposed method could be generalized for diagnosis of faults in power transformer winding.

Abstract
Purpose
To investigate the general necessary condition for synthesis of square, real rational matrices of complex frequency as admittance matrices of active multiports with resistors, inductors, capacitors and possibly multiport transformers and to prove that this condition is also sufficient for synthesis of stable, square, real rational matrices of complex frequency as admittance matrices of balanced active multiports having only resistors, capacitors and voltage‐amplifiers with sufficiently large amplifications. The main aim of the paper is to provide a new and general method for stable admittance matrices synthesis and to develop strict realization algorithm by active balanced transformerless multiport networks.
Design/methodology/approach
The objectives of the paper are achieved by using factorization of regular polynomial matrices in complex frequency with certain degree as products of other regular polynomial matrices with specified degrees. A set of sufficient conditions for such a factorization is presented and derived a pertinent algorithm as the starting point for investigation and solving network synthesis problem and generation of class of equivalent realizations.
Findings
Theorem 1 states that sufficient condition for factorization of Pth order, generally regular polynomial matrix P(s) in complex frequency s with degree L, whose determinant has K distinct zeros, in form P(s)=P1(s)·P2(s), where 1≤p2=P20≤L−1 is degree of polynomial matrix P2(s), reads: K>(P−1)·L+p2−1. The coefficient‐matrices of s, s2,… in P1(s) and P2(s) are real or complex depending on whether distinct zeros of det P(s) are real or complex, respectively. Theorem 2 states that: (a) for realization of Pth order matrix of real rational functions in complex frequency s (i.e. RRF matrix) as admittance matrix of active balanced RLC P‐port network with multiport transformers, or without them, P generalized controlled‐sources and P controlling‐ports are necessary, in general; and (b) P balanced voltage‐controlled voltage‐sources (VCVSs) with real and by module greater than unity controlling coefficients (“voltage amplifications”) are sufficient for realization of stable admittance RRF matrix by active, balanced, transformerless, RC P‐port network.
Originality/value
This is a research paper with the following two main contributions (original results). First, a theorem on sufficient conditions for factorization of regular polynomial matrices in complex frequency; and second, a theorem relating to sufficient conditions for synthesis of matrices of real rational functions in complex frequency by active, balanced, transformerless networks. The results may be interesting for network theorists and researchers in the field of electric circuits and systems.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report on the findings of a study designed to understand how management accounting changes when an organization evolves in a more network‐oriented direction, informed by an experiential or integrated approach to learning.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper draws on a longitudinal case study initiated by the findings from a previous action research study at a manufacturing plant, the Volvo Floby factory.
Findings
By introducing and elaborating on the concept of local management accounting system (LMAS), this paper contributes to the debate about how management accounting reacts to new organizational forms and technologies. Two types of management accounting information are identified: one corresponds to the accountability aspect of accounting – Type 1 information, while Type 2 information refers to problem solving and control. A LMAS is supportive of both local accountability, which draws on valuing skills, and of local problem solving, which relies on decision skills.
Research limitations/implications
One of the research implications of this study is that a LMAS may function as an important mechanism for innovation by explicitly integrating the holistic and the analytic dimensions of experiential learning.
Practical implications
The reported case illustrates how management accounting may facilitate process innovation in a practical setting.
Originality/value
By adopting an experiential learning methodology to develop new knowledge, the production plant studied has succeeded in creating an environment characterized by continuous innovation.

Abstract
Purpose
The Cauer ladder network (CLN) model order reduction (MOR) method is applied to an industrial inductor. This paper aims to to anaylse the influence of different meshes on the CLN method and their parameters.
Design/methodology/approach
The industrial inductor is simulated with the CLN method for different meshes. Meshes considering skin effect are compared with equidistant meshes. The inductor is also simulated with the eddy current finite element method (ECFEM) for frequencies 1 kHz to 1 MHz. The solution of the CLN method is compared with the ECFEM solutions for the current density in the conductor and the total impedance.
Findings
The increase of resistance resulting from the skin effect can be modelled with the CLN method, using a uniform mesh with elements much larger than the skin depth. Meshes taking account of the skin depth are only needed if the electromagnetic fields have to be reconstructed. Additionally, the convergence of the impedance is used to define a stopping criterion without the need for a benchmark solution.
Originality/value
The work shows that the CLN method can generate a network, which is capable of mimicking the increase of resistance usually accompanied by the skin effect without using a mesh that takes the skin depth into account. In addition, the proposed stopping criterion makes it possible to use the CLN method as an a priori MOR technique.

Abstract
Presents the scientific methodology from the enlarged cybernetical perspective that recognizes the anisotropy of time, the probabilistic character of natural laws, and the entry that the incomplete determinism in Nature opens to the occurrence of innovation, growth, organization, teleology communication, control, contest and freedom. The new tier to the methodological edifice that cybernetics provides stands on the earlier tiers, which go back to the Ionians (c. 500 BC). However, the new insights reveal flaws in the earlier tiers, and their removal strengthens the entire edifice. The new concepts of teleological activity and contest allow the clear demarcation of the military sciences as those whose subject matter is teleological activity involving contest. The paramount question “what ought to be done”, outside the empirical realm, is embraced by the scientific methodology. It also embraces the cognitive sciences that ask how the human mind is able to discover, and how the sequence of discoveries might converge to a true description of reality.

Abstract
Purpose
The authors derive a nonlinear MOR based on the Cauer ladder network (CLN) representation, which serves as an application of the parameterized MOR. Two parametrized CLN representations were developed to handle the nonlinear magnetic field. Simulations using the parameterized CLN were also conducted using an iron-cored inductor model under the first-order approximation.
Design/methodology/approach
This work studies the effect of parameter variations on reduced systems and aims at developing a general formulation for parametrized model order reduction (MOR) methods with the dynamical transition of parameterized state.
Findings
Terms including time derivatives of basis vectors appear in nonlinear state equations, in addition to the linear network equations of the CLN method. The terms are newly derived by an exact formulation of the parameterized CLN and are named parameter variation terms in this study. According to the simulation results, the parameter variation terms play a significant role in the nonlinear state equations when reluctivity is used, while they can be neglected when differential reluctivity is used.
Practical implications
The computational time of nonlinear transient analyses can be greatly reduced by applying the parameterized CLN when the number of time steps is large.
Originality/value
The authors introduced a general representation for the dynamical behavior of the reduced system with time-varying parameters, which has not been theoretically discussed in previous studies. The effect of the parameter variations is numerically given as a form of parameter variation terms by the exact derivation of the nonlinear state equations. The influence of parameter variation terms was confirmed by simulation.

Abstract
Challenge-based learning (CBL) has gained acceptance as a contemporary and progressive teaching pedagogy that provides a holistic and inclusive experience to learners in higher education (HE) institutions. However, its lack of appeal to non-STEM subjects and the need for further development, particularly concerning improved approaches, have been recognized. It seems that CBL runs the risk of becoming a portmanteau pedagogy that blends aspects of problem-based learning, project-based learning, and situated learning, as opposed to its development as an effective pedagogy tool. This points to a lack of a formal implementation framework, code of practice, and standard procedures for its delivery. We argue that blending a design thinking (DT) pedagogy with CBL can potentially provide the stability that CBL currently lacks. At the same time, it also presents a more inclusive proposition to potential non-STEM audiences. Thus, in this chapter, we seek to interrogate the intersectionality between CBL and DT literature in the context of HE teaching and learning with a view of establishing CBL as a pedagogy in its own right. We attempt to achieve this by systematically analyzing the separate literature to reveal the synergies and common touchpoints.

Embroidery as a textile embellishment technique plays an important role in people's daily life. Esthetic embroidery artworks possess cultural values. With the development of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), these technologies have been studied and applied in the embroidery process. This study aims to survey how these technologies facilitate embroidery from different aspects.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper surveys how the technologies of robotics and AI are applied in the embroidery field. The applications are mainly reviewed from three aspects: computerized robotic embroidery systems has been widely used for the mass production of embroidered textiles, the advanced technological systems and techniques have greatly facilitated the development of smart textiles and the artificial intelligence plays an important role in the inheritance, innovation and protection of traditional handicraft artwork of embroidery.
Findings
The programmable robotic embroidery machines have greatly improved the production efficiency of embroidered textiles and promoted the development of electronic textiles. The AI, mainly the deep learning technology, brings significant benefits to esthetic embroidery creation. Technology-based embroidery has become a hot research topic in the field of textiles.
Originality/value
This paper summarizes the application of robotics and AI technologies in the field of embroidery, which provides readers a comprehensive and systematic understanding about the research progress of modern technology-oriented embroidery.
