Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evolve an enhanced butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA) with respect to convergence and accuracy performance for numerous benchmark functions, rigorous constrained engineering design problems and an inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) image motion compensation.

Design/methodology/approach

Adaptive BOA (ABOA) is thus developed by incorporating spatial dispersal strategy to the global search and inserting the fittest solution to the local search, and hence its exploration and exploitation abilities are improved.

Findings

The accuracy and convergence performance of ABOA are well verified via exhaustive comparisons with BOA and its existing variants such as improved BOA (IBOA), modified BOA (MBOA) and BOA with Levy flight (BOAL) in terms of various precise metrics through 15 classical and 12 conference on evolutionary computation (CEC)-2017 benchmark functions. ABOA has outstanding accuracy and stability performance better than BOA, IBOA, MBOA and BOAL for most of the benchmarks. The design optimization performance of ABOA is also evaluated for three constrained engineering problems such as welded beam design, spring design and gear train design and the results are compared with those of BOA, MBOA and BOA with chaos. ABOA, therefore, optimizes engineering designs with the most optimal variables. Furthermore, a validation is performed through translational motion compensation (TMC) of the ISAR image for an aircraft, which includes blurriness. In TMC, the motion parameters such as velocity and acceleration of target are optimally predicted by the optimization algorithms. The TMC results are elaborately compared with BOA, IBOA, MBOA and BOAL between each other in view of images, motion parameter and numerical image measuring metrics.

Originality/value

The outperforming results reflect the optimization and design successes of ABOA which is enhanced by establishing better global and local search abilities over BOA and its existing variants.

Abstract

Purpose

In line with computational technological advances, obtaining optimal solutions for engineering problems has become attractive research topics in various disciplines and real engineering systems having multiple objectives. Therefore, it is aimed to ensure that the multiple objectives are simultaneously optimized by considering them among the trade-offs. Furthermore, the practical means of solving those problems are principally concentrated on handling various complicated constraints. The purpose of this paper is to suggest an algorithm based on symbiotic organisms search (SOS), which mimics the symbiotic reciprocal influence scheme adopted by organisms to live on and breed within the ecosystem, for constrained multi-objective engineering design problems.

Design/methodology/approach

Though the general performance of SOS algorithm was previously well demonstrated for ordinary single objective optimization problems, its efficacy on multi-objective real engineering problems will be decisive about the performance. The SOS algorithm is, hence, implemented to obtain the optimal solutions of challengingly constrained multi-objective engineering design problems using the Pareto optimality concept.

Findings

Four well-known mixed constrained multi-objective engineering design problems and a real-world complex constrained multilayer dielectric filter design problem are tackled to demonstrate the precision and stability of the multi-objective SOS (MOSOS) algorithm. Also, the comparison of the obtained results with some other well-known metaheuristics illustrates the validity and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Originality/value

The algorithmic performance of the MOSOS on the challengingly constrained multi-objective multidisciplinary engineering design problems with constraint-handling approach is successfully demonstrated with respect to the obtained outperforming final optimal designs.

Abstract

Purpose

At first, the organic/inorganic and hybrid PV materials by their electrical model are described. Then the proposed converter topology, circuit analysis and various operating modes of converter according to on/off timing of switches are investigated. The current and voltage in the converter components are illustrated and the voltage gain and switching stress of proposed converter are presented. Finally, to show the effectiveness of the proposed converter, the power loss analysis is provided and the simulation is done in PSIM software. In the last section, the advantages of the proposed topology of higher efficiency by lower number of components in compare with other conventional topologies are presented.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, an improved topology of DC-DC converter based on VL technique is proposed for Perovskite Solar cells (PeSCs). The PeSCs attracted a lot of interest due to their potential in combining the advantages of both organic and inorganic components. The proposed converter by using fewer components and higher output voltage generation in compare with conventional ones could be a good candidate for PeSCs due to lower efficiency of this cells. The performance of converter is expressed in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), and the boundary conditions for the proposed converter is presented.

Findings

By using VL technique, this converter is used to boost the lower output voltage levels of PeSCs for grid connection. The PV cell output voltage is increased from 24.5 V to 106 V by proposed converter topology. The step-by-step voltage increasing by charging and discharging of inductor and capacitor is used for boosting the input voltage. By comparing other converters, there is no design complexity in the proposed converter structure, and the power loss is much reduced which increases the converter efficiency. On the other hand, due to using lower number of elements of energy storage elements such as inductors and capacitors, the converter cost is also diminished. Therefore, the design topology simplicity which result simple control algorithm and lower number of components which diminish the system cost by appropriate voltage boosting capability are the main advantages of this proposed topology for new PeSCs which don’t have enough efficiency in compare with old Si PV cells.

Originality/value

In this paper, by using the lower number of components a new structure of DC-DC converter based on the VL technique is proposed. The advantages of this converter such as the simplicity, easier control and high voltage gain by lower power loss, could make this converter a good candidate for new PeSCs where the system whole efficiency will be a critical point to have the unique properties of this new materials in lower loss.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of globalisation on educational institutions in Turkey (to be specific, in the provinces of Amasya, Samsun and Tokat) by means of a series of inquiries carried out among secondary school administrators.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative method has been used in the study which attempts to lay bare the effects of globalisation on education via questions directed to school principals. A “configured questionnaire” has been employed as the method for collecting data, and all the administrators have been asked the same questions. The configured questionnaire form is made up of six open‐ended questions focusing on the effects of globalisation on education policies.

Findings

The findings gathered demonstrate that school administrators entertain different attitudes towards the effects of globalisation.

Originality/value

The most striking upshot is the finding that school administrators do have an awareness of the effects of globalisation, whether they hold a negative or positive stance towards the issue.

Abstract

Purpose

The study of sustainability within universities is recognized as essential for debates and research; in the long term, the “sustainable university” concepts can contribute to sustainability from a larger perspective. This study aims to propose a conceptual model for evaluating the students’ sustainability considering their interactions with the university and the environment. The proposed model is titled Sunshine model. It is applied to students of the La Salle University, Peru.

Design/methodology/approach

The model combines academic performance, happiness and the ecological footprint to quantify university students’ sustainability. A structured questionnaire survey was elaborated and applied to get the raw data that feeds the three methods. The students’ average grades evaluate academic performance. Happiness is quantified by the happiness index method, and the ecological footprint is measured by the demand for food, paper, electricity, transport and built-up areas. Results are evaluated under both approaches, overall group performance and clusters.

Findings

The proposed model avoids misleading interpretations of a single indicator or discussions on sustainability that lack a conceptual model, bringing robustness in assessing students’ sustainability in universities. To have a low ecological footprint, the student needs to need up to 1 planet for their lifestyle, be considered happy with at least 0.8 (of 1) for happiness index, and have good academic performance with at least a grade of 7 (of 10) in their course. Regarding the case study, La Salle students show a high academic grade degree of 7, a high level for happiness index of 0.8 and low performance for ecological footprint by demanding 1.8 Earth planets, resulting in an “environmentally distracted” overall classification for students with 2019 data. From a cluster approach, 81% of evaluated students (n = 603) have low performance for ecological footprint, whereas 31% have low performance for indicators of recreational activities of happiness. Changing lifestyles and making more recreational activities available play crucial roles in achieving higher sustainability for the La Salle students.

Research limitations/implications

The happiness assessment questionnaire can be subject to criticism, as it was created as a specific method for this type of audience based on existing questionnaires in the literature. Although it can be seen as an important approach for diagnoses, the proposed model does not consider the cause–effect aspect. The decision-maker must consider the sociocultural aspects before implementing plan actions.

Practical implications

University managers can better understand why university students have high or low sustainability performance and provide more effective actions toward higher levels of students’ sustainability.

Originality/value

The proposed model, Sunshine model, overcomes the single-criteria existing tools that access the sustainability of universities. Rather than focusing on university infrastructure, the proposed model focuses on the students and their relationship with the university.
