Abstract

Interest arbitration is a collective bargaining procedure in which an independent arbitrator determines the terms of a binding contract. Because the union and employer each has the power to veto arbitrators from participating in future cases, the arbitrator exchangeability hypothesis suggests an arbitrator strategy of rendering awards similar to those awarded by past arbitrators to avoid veto. Arbitration theory, however, predicts that arbitrators will tend to select similar awards even if such strategy is not deliberately pursued This paper produces empirical evidence that arbitrators will tend to choose the same awards with or without the use of past awards as a guide.

Abstract

THE Reference Department of Paisley Central Library today occupies the room which was the original Public Library built in 1870 and opened to the public in April 1871. Since that date two extensions to the building have taken place. The first, in 1882, provided a separate room for both Reference and Lending libraries; the second, opened in 1938, provided a new Children's Department. Together with the original cost of the building, these extensions were entirely financed by Sir Peter Coats, James Coats of Auchendrane and Daniel Coats respectively. The people of Paisley indeed owe much to this one family, whose generosity was great. They not only provided the capital required but continued to donate many useful and often extremely valuable works of reference over the many years that followed. In 1975 Paisley Library was incorporated in the new Renfrew District library service.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report on the annual Forum on Science and Technology Policy. This is an update on federal commitments to science and scientific research and policy.

Design/Methodology/approach

The focus this year on High Technology reinforces the role of funding and awards of research grants to contribute to the political agenda of the current administration.

Findings

One gains an overview about the current state of affairs in science and technology research, trends in scientific communication, and the resulting public policy that follows.

Research limitations/implications

Political consequences and trends of recent directives cause one to pause and be concerned about the state of federally sponsored research in the USA.

Originality/valve

The paper highlights the efforts and impacts of high technology in science and technology research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) countermeasures will affect the financing of the North American leagues. In particular, we focus on the missed revenue from gate receipts for the Big Four leagues.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors forecast the 2020 revenue for each of the four major leagues under two scenarios: (1) expected revenue under the normal conditions of fans in attendance and (2) expected revenues in the absence of fans due to the countermeasures in place. Then, the authors calculate the loss in gate receipts as a difference in the revenue under fans and no-fans scenarios.

Findings

Based on the current estimates, the combined financial loss of the clubs from NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL is expected to be above 6.8bn dollars in gate receipts alone.

Practical implications

The findings are useful to the league management to prepare for the suboptimal financial situation.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that explores the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic across the major league sports leagues in North America.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of online video mini-lectures, intended to complement in-class teaching by allowing students to review the more technical aspects of the course.

Design/methodology/approach

Online video mini-lectures/tutorials, covering the technical components of the course, were introduced two-thirds of the way through a Principles of Microeconomics course. This methodology allows for the estimation of the impact of incorporating this technology on student performance. In addition, comparisons using results from previous terms, in which these videos were not available at any point during the course, allow for an examination of the overall impact of this technology on student performance in the last portion of the course.

Findings

The results point to online lectures improving student achievement, but that this improvement is mostly achieved by the lower achieving students, and exhibits significant diminishing returns to the number of times the videos are watched. As such, the videos are shown to help students who were struggling with the material, but that there is little value to exclusively watching the videos multiple times.

Originality/value

As technology impacts higher education, many wonder what role instructors will play. This study examines a unique implementation of technology within a traditional classroom, indicating that technology can serve as a complement to in-class teaching.
