LR rarely prints position papers. The piece which follows is an exception which the author himself believes does not apply exclusively to inner city libraries.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine Australian exporter perceptions of export credit insurance (ECI) value and ECI value drivers to help uncover how Australian (and other) exporters can optimize their ECI use.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses a 1,000 firm survey of how Australian ECI users and non‐users perceive the value of often‐cited attributes of ECI and multiple regression analysis to create a model of ECI value drivers.
Findings
Most ECI value is derived from the increased trade exporters can manage with ECI protection and from improved access to trade finance. Clear differences are observable in perceived ECI value between larger and smaller exporters as well as between ECI users and non‐users.
Originality/value
This paper provides the first evidence of perceived ECI value to Australian exporters as well as differences between ECI users and non‐users. Export credit insurers and export support agencies need to focus on these differences to ensure that ECI is being optimally marketed and used by Australian exporters.

Abstract
The following classified, annotated list of titles is intended to provide reference librarians with a current checklist of new reference books, and is designed to supplement the RSR review column, “Recent Reference Books,” by Frances Neel Cheney. “Reference Books in Print” includes all additional books received prior to the inclusion deadline established for this issue. Appearance in this column does not preclude a later review in RSR. Publishers are urged to send a copy of all new reference books directly to RSR as soon as published, for immediate listing in “Reference Books in Print.” Reference books with imprints older than two years will not be included (with the exception of current reprints or older books newly acquired for distribution by another publisher). The column shall also occasionally include library science or other library related publications of other than a reference character.

Abstract
Non‐absorbent V.P.I. paper. Leonard Stace Ltd. announce an addition to their range of V.P.I. rust preventing packaging papers. The new paper has all the characteristics of normal V.P.I. paper, in that it gives off a rust inhibiting vapour preventing the formation of rust on articles which it is used to wrap and, in addition, it is coated with a special formulation which prevents water being absorbed by the paper, yet still allows the protective vapour to be emitted.

Abstract
A LASER METHOD FOR DATA STORAGE Dr. George Castro and his colleagues of the Physical Science Department of IBM's San Jose Laboratory have patented a laser method of recording data. They suggest the method would enable the brain's capacity to be put on a square surface about a yard across, assuming that the human memory can hold only a million billion bits of basic information.

Abstract
Five hobbing machines and a selection of hobs and gear‐cutting tools were shown by this Manchester company at the Exhibition. Of these the MT‐V spline hobbing machine is a new design. In this machine the work is held with its axis vertical. Although primarily intended for the cutting of spline shafts the machine is capable also of hobbing spur and helical gears up to 15 in. diameter. The maximum distance between work centres is 35 in., and the maximum vertical traverse of the hob slide is 23 in., which can be extended to 32 in. if a cavity can be provided in the foundation.
