Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to consider how facilitation can be used specifically in teams when consensus is required.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper discusses how facilitation can be used in teams.

Findings

Finds that teams which mine for the collective intelligence of all members engage people and come to decisions that team members own.

Practical implications

Suggests that hurried or imposed decisions will fail to get the support of the team. In this way, management is contributing to its own failure. Points out that facilitators need both a set of generic skills and specific techniques which they can apply to group decision‐making.

Originality/value

Argues that the skills of facilitation in ensuring that people are heard and valued equally are essential to such decision‐making.

Abstract

J.B. PRIESTLEY has always been Jack Priestley to his friends; but what is not so well known is the fact that Clive Staples Lewis was also intimately known as Jack. In early childhood he took a hearty dislike to his formal title, and insisted on being called ‘Jacksie’. This evolved into Jack; and Jack he stayed.

Abstract

Ratcheting up the pressure on staff never works for long, but soft‐soaping employees does not get results either. So how can organizations help overloaded staff to improve their performance? At the Common Services Agency (CSA), the body that plays an active role in NHS Scotland by providing support and advice for Scotland’s health and patient care, they believe they have found the answer – mental agility.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest that when it comes to information overload, executives need to be more proactive in their approach.

Design/methodology/approach

A three state approach to overload is considered in the paper which is underpinned by continuous assessment on the part of the manager or reader. Within each of these states there are a set of tools outlined which help with this assessment.

Findings

The paper finds that assessment and evaluation are critical for anyone who needs to manage information overload at work.

Originality/value

The new approach to managing information overload in this paper offers executives a practical solution to major work problems.

Abstract

Purpose

Many bibliographies of books about C.S. Lewis' works and life have been compiled in the past, but a bibliography of recent literary criticism addressing Lewis and his work is hard to come by. The purpose of this paper is to provide a bibliography of the best works recently published about C.S. Lewis and his writings.

Design/methodology/approach

Many different sources were used to find current popular works about C.S. Lewis and his writings. The author searched several databases, read several book reviews, and looked through the source itself when available in order to compile an annotated list of current works, which are viewed to be important additions to the literature about C.S. Lewis and his works.

Practical implications

The resulting bibliography is not a complete list of everything written about C.S. Lewis in the past few years. Instead, the intent is to compile a research guide of the sources considered to be the most useful contributions to the works about C.S. Lewis that already exist.

Findings

Included in this research guide is a list of quality biographies and literary criticism found in reference sources; a sample of book‐length resources focusing on Lewis' life, thought, and writings; short descriptions of periodicals that frequently discuss Lewis' work; and examples of popular databases and web resources dedicated to C.S. Lewis.

Originality/value

In addition to being intended for students, faculty, and those of the general public who are interested in reading about or doing research on C.S. Lewis and his works, this guide is designed for librarians who are trying to develop, maintain, or evaluate a collection on the topic.

Abstract

Retail warehousing is a subject of great topicality and interest. The property and planning press regularly contains new superlatives describing the behaviour of this sector of the retail industry. ‘…furniture and DIY warehouse sales were £658 million in 1984 showing a growth of 25% per annum since 1981.’ ‘Since 1977 retail warehouse rents have increased by a staggering 16.5 per cent per annum…compared with 13.0 per cent per annum for prime town centre retail rents.’ In 1986 there were current planning applications for more than 1.75m sq. ft of retail warehousing in the outer south east alone and ‘there are now over 1,000 stores in the country, with an estimated 40 chains currently seeking sites for 1,900 out‐of‐centre stores.’ Such statements distract the attention and make more difficult an examination of the factors which have underlain the emergence and remarkable growth of retail warehouses. Retail warehouses are one particular type of retail outlet and should be considered within the context of those wider trends evident in the retail sector as a whole.

Abstract

Discusses the difficulties facing retailers whose profitability has fallen while sales have risen, and the effects this has on the retail property market. Identifies the financial health of the retailers, discerning customers, occupation cost uncertainty, boom in floorspace, and competition from the non‐property market as factors which require a marketing effort by the property industry. Concludes that the use of information is vital for the property market to attract retailers.

Abstract

Retail parks are an increasingly common feature of the UK retailing scene. This paper describes the development, and customer perceptions, of an unplanned second generation park and a planned third generation park in Belfast. The results reveal that although the planned retail park was highly regarded, it was much less successful than its unplanned counterpart, thanks to problems with the launch, location and letting process.
