Abstract

Explores the application of segmentation in this market and compares state with private provisions in the UK, states the state service cannot hope to match private provision. Accepts there is general acceptance that the concepts of marketing are as applicable to industrial as to consumer products. Reveals that the labour market suffers from lack of knowledge about vacancies, job opportunities and prospects, and about the differences in wages and salaries offered by employers. Proposes that in monetary terms, if people can be placed in work just one day earlier than at present this would save £21/2 million annually in unemployment benefits and raise national output by £10 million. Concludes that if sufficient finance could be provided by charging employers for the services of the state employment exchanges, then the introduction of necessary marketing techniques could take place much sooner.

Abstract

Samples, free gifts, competitions and even trading stamps are severely curtailed or forbidden in EEC member countries, and British manufacturers and retailers will be hindered by this same legislation if steps taken to harmonise the laws of unfair competition are proceeded with. Christina Fulop strongly criticises these laws, which in her view go further than is necessary for the maintenance of fair competition. She also comments on the undesirability of combining this legislation with consumer protection measures, as has been done by the EEC legislators. Finally, she pleads for an examination ‘from first principles’ of practices considered suitable for harmonisation, in the light of consumer behaviour and current trading developments.

Abstract

Compares and contrasts the effects of the resale price maintenance abolition of 1964 emerging in different products and markets, with particular emphasis on the furniture and footwear trades. Finds that the furniture trade has been more significantly affected, with a higher consciousness of consumer needs among its retailers.

Abstract

Examines the influence on post‐war development of the consumer movement that ‘Which?’ magazine, the Consumers' Association organ has had. Considers factors which determined its introduction, examining promotional and testing methods, influence on manufacturers and purchasing habits of shoppers. Emphasizes that a consumer association seeks to redress the balance between manufacturers and retailers on the one hand, and the consumer on the other. Presents details of ‘Shoppers Guide’ in addition to ‘Which?’, even though this ceased publishing in 1963, and gives full information of the highs and lows of both. States that ‘Which?’ shot ahead of ‘Shoppers Guide’ when it decided to promote itself with sales promotion and press advertising. Concludes that the Consumers' Association remains the valuable supplementary source of information, advice and guidance which complements that available from manufacturers, retailers, neighbours, relations, and, on a more extreme scale, the media.

Abstract

Examines the effect on the marketing policies of retailers and manufacturers and the protection of consumers of the laws of unfair competition which exist in most member states of the Common Market. Look at the restrictions and prohibitions on marketing practices included in the laws of unfair competition. Questions whether measures designed to protect traders from so‐called unfair competition actually do so. Suggests that the law of unfair competition undertaken by the SSC fails to examine its premisses and philosophy.

Abstract

A few years ago, in an effort to promote co‐operation between the two professional associations of librarians in Ireland, a Liaison Committee, consisting of members nominated by the Council of the Library Association of Ireland and members nominated by the Committee of the Northern Ireland Branch of the Library Association was formed. The first fruit of its endeavours was found in the establishment of an Annual Joint‐Conference of the two bodies, the first one being held at Portrush, in Northern Ireland in 1963.

Abstract

The fears of many consumers a few years ago concerning the apparent impersonality and size of many shopping developments, have now been largely overcome. These have been superseded with concern for the distance and competitiveness factors associated with the latest trend in retailing — the movement ‘out‐of‐town’ — a development which at present receives hostility from many people in the United Kingdom, and cautious enthusiasm from others.
