Abstract
Purpose
The pin fin is applied into a Lamilloy cooling structure which is broadly used in the leading edge region of the modern gas turbine vane. The purpose of this paper is to investigate effects of the layout, diameter and shape of pin fins on the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics in a newly improved Lamilloy structure at the leading edge region of a turbine vane.
Design/methodology/approach
A numerical method is applied to investigate effects of the layout, diameter and shape of pin fins on the flow structure and heat transfer characteristics in a newly improved Lamilloy structure at the leading edge of a turbine vane. The diverse locations of pin fins are Lp = 0.35, 0.5, 0.65. The diameter of the pin fins varies from 8 mm to 32 mm. Three different ratios of root to roof diameter for pin fins are also investigated, i.e. k = 0.5, 1, 2. The Reynolds number ranges from 10,000 and 50,000. Results of the flow structures, heat transfer on the target surface and pin fin surfaces, and friction factor are studied.
Findings
The heat transfer on the pin fin surface gradually decreases and then increases as the location of the pin fins increases. Increasing the diameter of the pin fins causes the heat transfer on the pin fin surface to gradually increase, while a lower value of the friction factor occurs. Besides, the heat transfer on the pin fin surface at a small root diameter increases remarkably, but a slight heat transfer penalty is found at the target surface. It is also found that both the Reynolds analogy performance and the thermal performance are increased compared to the baseline whose diameter and normalized location of pin fins are set as 16 and 0.5 mm, respectively.
Social implications
The models provide a basic theoretical study to deal with nonuniformity of the temperature field for the turbine vane leading edge. The investigation also provides a better understanding of the heat transfer and flow characteristics in the leading edge region of a modern turbine vane.
Originality/value
This is a novel method to adopt pin fins into a Lamilloy cooling structure with curvature. It presents that the heat transfer of the pin fin surface in a pin-fin Lamilloy cooling structure with curvature can be significantly increased by changing the parameters of the pin fins which may lead to various flow behavior. In addition, the shape of the pin fin also shows great influence on the heat transfer and flow characteristics. However, the heat transfer of the target surface shows a small sensitivity to different layouts, diameter and shape of pin fin.

Abstract
Purpose
The dimple is adopted into a double wall cooling structure which is widely used in hot gas components to increase the heat transfer effects with relatively low pressure drop penalty. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of dimple depth and dimple diameter on the target surface heat transfer and the inlet to outlet friction factor.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is carried out by using the numerical simulations. The impingement flow is directly impinging on the dimple and released from the film holes after passing the double wall chamber. The ratio between dimple depth and dimple diameter is varied from 0 to 0.4 and the ratio between dimple diameter and impingement hole diameter is ranging from 0.5 to 3. The Reynolds number is between 10,000 and 70,000. Results of the target surface Nusselt number, friction factor and flow structures are included. For convenience of comparison, the double wall cooling structure without the dimple is considered as the baseline.
Findings
It is found that the dimple can effectively enhance the target surface heat transfer due to thinning of the flow boundary layer and flow reattachment as well as flow recirculation outside the dimple near the dimple rim especially for the large Re number condition. However, the stagnation point heat transfer is reduced. It is also found that for a large dimple depth or large dimple diameter, a salient heat transfer reduction occurs for the toroidal vortex. The thermal performance indicates that the intensity of the heat transfer enhancement depends upon the dimple depth and dimple diameter
Originality/value
This is the first time to adopt a dimple into a double wall cooling structure. It suggests that the target surface heat transfer in a double wall cooling structure can be increased by the use of the dimple. However, the heat transfer characteristic is sensitive for the different dimple diameter and dimple depth which may result in a different flow behavior

Purpose
The dimple is adopted into a pin fin wedge duct which is widely used in modern gas turbine vane cooling structure trailing edge region. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of dimple depth and duct converging angle on the endwall heat transfer and friction factor in this pin fin wedge duct.
Design/methodology/approach
The study is carried out by using the numerical simulations. The diameter of dimples is the same as the pin fin diameter with an inline manner arrangement in relation to the pin fin. The ratio between dimple depth and dimple diameter is varied from 0 to 0.3 and the converging angle is ranging from 0° to 12.7°. The Reynolds number is between 10,000 and 50,000. Results of the endwall Nusselt number, friction factor, and flow structures are included. For convenience of comparison, the pin fin wedge duct with a converging angle of 12.7° without dimples is considered as the baseline.
Findings
It is found that the dimples can effectively enhance the endwall heat transfer due to the impingement on the dimple surface, reattachment downstream the dimple and recirculation in front of the pin fin leading edge. By increasing the converging angle, the heat transfer is also increased but with a large friction factor penalty. In addition, the heat transfer enhancement for deep depth cases is 1.57 times higher than that of the low depth case. The thermal performance indicates that the intensity of heat transfer enhancement depends upon the dimple depth and converging angle.
Originality/value
It suggests that the endwall heat transfer in a pin fin wedge duct can be increase by the adoption of dimples. The optimal dimple relative depth is 0.2 with low friction factor and high heat transfer performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the impact of key parameters of brake pads on the dynamic characteristics of the braking system.
Design/methodology/approach
This study conducted experimental research based on a friction testing machine with a slider-disc structure. The experiment studied the impact of key parameters of brake pads (rotation speed, pressure, mass, braking radius, etc.) and the braking environment (dry friction, wetness, sand, etc.) on the stability of the braking system. At the same time, a dynamic model of the brake pad braking system was established and compared with experimental results using the mathematical tool of autocorrelation coefficient.
Findings
The key parameters of brake pads have a significant impact on the dynamic characteristics of the braking system; under different conditions of brake pad mass, tribological parameters, brake pad radius and braking environment, the chaotic characteristics of the braking friction force signal show a trend of expansion or contraction, which can be suppressed by adjusting the key parameters of brake pads.
Originality/value
This study can provide a reference for optimizing the braking strategy and reducing noise and vibration in brake pad systems.

Abstract
Purpose
Resilience concepts in integrated urban transport refer to the performance of dealing with external shock and the ability to continue to provide transportation services of all modes. A robust transportation resilience is a goal in pursuing transportation sustainability. Under this specified context, while before the perturbations, robustness refers to the degree of the system’s capability of functioning according to its design specifications on integrated modes and routes, redundancy is the degree of duplication of traffic routes and alternative modes to maintain persistency of service in case of perturbations. While after the perturbations, resourcefulness refers to the capacity to identify operational problems in the system, prioritize interventions and mobilize necessary material/ human resources to recover all the routes and modes, rapidity is the speed of complete recovery of all modes and traffic routes in the urban area. These “4R” are the most critical components of urban integrated resilience.
Design/methodology/approach
The trends of transportation resilience's connotation, metrics and strategies are summarized from the literature. A framework is introduced on both qualitative characteristics and quantitative metrics of transportation resilience. Using both model-based and mode-free methodologies that measure resilience in attributes, topology and system performance provides a benchmark for evaluating the mechanism of resilience changes during the perturbation. Correspondingly, different pre-perturbation and post-perturbation strategies for enhancing resilience under multi-mode scenarios are reviewed and summarized.
Findings
Cyber-physic transportation system (CPS) is a more targeted solution to resilience issues in transportation. A well-designed CPS can be applied to improve transport resilience facing different perturbations. The CPS ensures the independence and integrity of every child element within each functional zone while reacting rapidly.
Originality/value
This paper provides a more comprehensive understanding of transportation resilience in terms of integrated urban transport. The fundamental characteristics and strategies for resilience are summarized and elaborated. As little research has shed light on the resilience concepts in integrated urban transport, the findings from this paper point out the development trend of a resilient transportation system for digital and data-driven management.

Abstract
Purpose
A dynamic model of the brake system considering the tangential and radial motion of the pad, and the torsion and wobbling motion of the disk is established in this paper. The influence of radial stiffness on the brake system is investigated under different tribological conditions. This paper aims to prove that sufficient radial stiffness is indispensable in the design of the brake system with good tribological performance.
Design/methodology/approach
By using the lumped mass method, a dynamic model of the brake system is established. A Stribeck-type friction model is applied to this model to correlate the frictional velocity, pressure and friction force. The stability of pad vibration is analysed by analysis methods. A new stability evaluation parameter is proposed to study the influence of radial stiffness on stability of pad vibration in a certain friction coefficient brake pressure range.
Findings
The findings show that the tangential vibration of the pad transits from periodic motion to quasi-periodic motion under a low tangential stiffness. The influence of radial stiffness on motion stability is stronger under a low nominal brake radius. The stability of the brake system can be ensured when the brake radius and radial stiffness are sufficient.
Originality/value
The influence of tangential stiffness of pad on stability of the brake system has been researched for decades. The insufficiency of stiffness in radial direction may also generate certain levels of instabilities but has not been fully investigated by modelling approach. This paper reveals that this parameter is also strongly correlated to nonlinear vibration of the brake pad.

The purpose of this paper is to separate and purify flavonoids from glycyrrhiza by macroporous adsorption resin (MAR) mixed-bed technology.
Design/methodology/approach
The adsorption performance of MAR and MAR mixed bed for flavonoids was studied using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry.
Findings
The research shows that the MAR mixed bed of LZ-50+LZ-59 with a mass ratio of LZ-50:LZ-59(m:m) = 1:1 was the optimized combination with the optimal conditions of adsorption (pH = 6, T = 45°C) and desorption (liquid ratio R = 70%, T = 50°C, pH = 8) obtained, relatively.
Originality/value
This paper provides a novel way to separate flavonoids from glycyrrhiza. Under the optimal conditions, the adsorption rate (F) of MAR mixed-bed LZ-50+LZ-59 to the flavonoids was 62.5 per cent/g, the desorption rate (D) was 89.23 per cent and the purity was achieved at 80 per cent.

Purpose
An empirical study investigated the antecedents to perceived usefulness (PU) and its consequences in the context of smoking cessation online health communities (OHCs).
Design/methodology/approach
To validate a research model for perceived informational support, perceived emotional support and perceived esteem support, the authors conducted a partial-least-squares analysis of empirical data from an online survey (N = 173) of users of two smoking cessation OHCs. The proposed model articulates these as antecedents to PU from a social support perspective, and knowledge sharing and continuance intention are expressed as consequences of PU.
Findings
The empirical study identified that the PU of smoking cessation OHCs is influenced by perceived emotional support and perceived esteem support, and perceived informational support indirectly affects PU via these factors. In turn, PU exerts a positive influence on both knowledge sharing and continuance intention. Also, knowledge sharing positively affects continuance intention.
Originality/value
The study contributes to scholarship on users' postadoption behavior in the context of smoking cessation OHCs by disentangling the antecedents to PU from a social support perspective and pinpointing some important consequences of PU. The research also has practical implications for managing smoking cessation OHCs.

Purpose
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Al2O3 mass fraction on the corrosive-wear and electrochemical performance of NiTi coating in 3.5% NaCl solution.
Design/methodology/approach
The NiTi–xAl2O3 coatings were fabricated on S355 steel by laser cladding, and their corrosive-wear and electrochemical performance were investigated using a wear tester and electrochemical workstation, respectively.
Findings
The wear rates of NiTi–5%Al2O3, –10%Al2O3 and –15%Al2O3 coatings are 82.33, 54.23 and 30.10 µm3 mm−1 N−1, respectively, showing that the wear resistance of NiTi–15%Al2O3 coating is the best. The wear mechanism is abrasive wear, which is attributed to the increase of coating hardness by the Al2O3 addition. The polarization resistance of NiTi–5%Al2O3, –10%Al2O3 and –15%Al2O3 coatings is 3,639, 5,125 and 10,024 O cm2, respectively, exhibiting that the NiTi–15% Al2O3 coating has the best corrosion resistance.
Originality/value
The roles of Al2O3 in the corrosive-wear and electrochemical performance of NiTi–xAl2O3 coating were revealed through the experimental investigation.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to explore how perceived prosumer content quality (PPCQ) and perceived interaction quality (PIQ) improve users' co-creation experiences and subsequently influence their co-creation intentions in the future. In addition, the paper examines users' prosumer ability into consideration.
Design/methodology/approach
The research model based on stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) paradigm is developed to observe users' participation in value co-creation activities. In total, 318 valid responses were collected from a survey. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the model and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) PROCESS macro (Model 58) by Hayes was applied to investigate the moderating effect of prosumer ability in mediation paths.
Findings
It is observed that co-creation intention is determined by user-learning value, social-integrative value and hedonic value, which are influenced by PPCQ and PIQ. Besides, uses' prosumer ability moderates the indirect effects of PPCQ and PIQ on co-creation intentions through co-creation experiences.
Research limitations/implications
The paper provides a prosumption perspective to explain users' co-creation intentions in social commerce and proposes the importance of user-learning, social-integrative and hedonic values in determining co-creation intentions.
Practical implications
Social commerce platforms can encourage prosumption activities and cultivate multi-level prosumers to achieve a win–win situation.
Originality/value
Little prior research has explicitly examined how and why users participate in value co-creation activities in social commerce from prosumption perspective. The current paper seeks to fill this gap and open new avenues for other value co-creation researchers.
