Abstract

This article describes a record‐keeping software package for ILL developed by the authors and programmed by Michael DeCorte and Gary Levin. ILLFILE can pick up information from any field of the OCLC ILL workform so that data for CONTU copyright compliance and other needs can be collected by computer (through included sorting and duplicate‐detection software) rather than manually.

Abstract

In April 1988, the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature (NRC) (see sidebar) published “AIDS: Law, Ethics and Public Policy.” As part of the NRC's Scope Note Series, the paper offered a current overview of issues and viewpoints related to AIDS and ethics. Not meant to be a comprehensive review of all AIDS literature, it contained selected citations referring to facts, opinion, and legal precedents, as well as a discussion of different ethical aspects surrounding AIDS. Updating the earlier work, this bibliography provides ethical citations from literature published from 1988 to the present.

Abstract

A small academic library in northeastern Ohio, with monograph holdings of about 85,000 titles, serving a student population of about 1,000, recently asked Marsha Hunt of OHIONET to perform a hit rate study on CAT CD450 using a representative sample of their collection to determine if this product might be useful in their retrospective conversion effort. The 100‐title sample included older books on such diverse subjects as religion, Ohio history, and business writing. Marsha found 77 of the 100 titles—a 77% hit rate. Of the 77, 16 were DLC/DLC input, 45 were DLC/member input, 14 were of unknown origin/member input, and 2 were original record/member input. Anyone interested in receiving a list of the titles searched can contact me.

Abstract

M310 Workstations delivered after July 1 will have a Video Graphics Array (VGA) adapter board instead of the EGA board. The VGA adapter is the same type of board used in high‐end IBM PS/2s and is the current standard in adapter boards. (See p. 5.) The VGA display resolution is much higher than that of the EGA and thus provides crisper screen images. There will be some minor changes in the Terminal Software Installation routine (documentation is currently in preparation) but no problems are anticipated.

Abstract

Discusses the use of the ILLFILE program for lending record‐keeping in addition to the more usual copyright limit control. Examines the steps needed to allow ILLFILE to perform the function, how to sort the records, using the Update command, using ILLVIEW, and producing reports. Surmises that using ILLFILE allows records of incoming and outgoing requests with only the additional step of inserting a computer disk in the daily routine.

Abstract

An interdisciplinary approach for computing the point‐to‐point message delay, a measure of congestion in a computer communication network, is derived by the inclusion of a queueing theory result in a probabilistic automaton model. This network model is structurally composed of the interconnection of two distinct repetitive probabilistic automatons. The formulation of the solution is based on the network probability transition matrix which represents the state transitions for the number of customers in the GI/G/1 queue at each computer node and the intranode and internode port routing.

Abstract

What is it about academia anyway? We profess to hate it, spend endless amounts of time complaining about it, and yet we in academia will do practically anything to stay. The pay may be low, job security elusive, and in the end, it's not the glamorous work we envisioned it would be. Yet, it still holds fascination and interest for us. This is an article about American academic fiction. By academic fiction, I mean novels whosemain characters are professors, college students, and those individuals associated with academia. These works reveal many truths about the higher education experience not readily available elsewhere. We learn about ourselves and the university community in which we work.
