Abstract

The recipe for dependable welding is experience, more experience and the selection of the best materials and equipment. Add to this a reputation to be preserved together with a guarantee of all repairs undertaken and the result is certain satisfaction.

Abstract

OBTAINING works equipment, particularly machine tools, presents a knotty problem nowadays. The trouble is not confined solely to new factories but applies with equal difficulty when replacements are required. All possible sources of supply are being tapped, but the demand far exceeds productive capacity.

Abstract

TIME and again lubrication is made the scapegoat for mechanical troubles arising from totally different causes. It is the obvious false alibi, for only rarely is there anyone around who is able to counter the attack knowledgeably.

Abstract

More than once the British Food Journal has had occasion to deplore the inclusion, in official reports to local authorities, of elaborate statistical tables giving the impression that bare figures relating to the examination of samples of food and drugs are of more value than is in fact the case. “Figures by themselves,” said an experienced teacher of arithmetic, “have no meaning.” It is highly gratifying now to find that Mr. A. N. Leather, B.Sc., F.R.I.C., Public Analyst for the City of Manchester, has found time to discuss the problem of summarising laboratory results in such a manner as to convey a far more enlightening meaning than is to be derived from “bare” statistics. Space does not permit the inclusion of the whole of Mr. Leather's comments, but the gist of his argument—which we find most convincing—is here recorded.

Abstract

Present‐day speeds are such that the girder main plain has fallen into desuetude, except for a few light training aeroplanes. There are only two examples which can be considered to fall within the category of really modern aeroplanes: the Hawker Hurricane and the Gregor FDB‐1.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to combine task-technology fit, theory of planned behaviour and individual technology optimism, and propose a better hybrid technology behavioural intention model to explain Taiwanese students’ usage behaviour for weblog learning.

Design/methodology/approach

A 31-item questionnaire with eight constructs was administered to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in three universities in Taiwan. A total of 380 voluntary, usable responses were received, and a research model estimated using Smart PLS was used to interpret the structural relation results.

Findings

The results of the research model were analysed using a structural equation modelling approach to test six hypotheses and three moderating hypotheses; significant support were found for seven of them. Accordingly, this study considered the level of technology optimism as a moderator to explore whether it impacts perceived behavioural control, attitudes and social influences on behavioural intention related to weblog learning.

Originality/value

This research provides a better understanding of individual and system characteristics, as well as social factors regarding weblog learning system acceptance and intention.

Abstract

This research proposes and evaluates hypotheses about patterns of communication in a multi‐party, multi‐issue negotiation. Data were from 36 four‐person groups. We found that the majority of groups initiated negotiations with a distributive phase and ended with an integrative phase—strong support for Morley and Stephenson's (1979) rational model of negotiation. We identified transitions between both strategic orientations (integration, distribution) and strategic functions (action, information), but found that the first transition was more likely to result in a change of orientation than of function and that negotiators were more likely to change either orientation or function (single transition) than to change both aspects of the negotiation simultaneously (double transition). Finally, we determined that negotiators used process and closure strategies to interrupt distributive phases and redirect negotiations to an integrative phase.

Abstract

This study uses Hall's (1976) theory of low/high context culture with theories of interpersonal adaptation (Gudykunst, 1985; Patterson, 1983) to test communication preferences, flexibility, and effectiveness in same‐ and mixed‐culture negotiation. Ninety‐three same‐culture low context (Israel, Germany, Sweden, and U.S.), 101 same‐culture high context (Hong Kong, Japan, Russia, Thailand), and 48 mixed‐culture mixed context (U.S.‐Japan, U.S.‐Hong Kong) dyads negotiated a 1 ½ hour simulation. Transcripts were content coded for direct and indirect integrative sequences and analyzed with hierarchical linear regression. Supporting the theory, results revealed more indirect integrative sequences in high context dyads and more direct integrative sequences in low context and mixed context dyads. Direct integrative sequences predicted joint gains for mixed context dyads.
