Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Since the first Volume of this Bibliography there has been an explosion of literature in all the main areas of business. The researcher and librarian have to be able to uncover specific articles devoted to certain topics. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume III, in addition to the annotated list of articles as the two previous volumes, contains further features to help the reader. Each entry within has been indexed according to the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus and thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid information retrieval. Each article has its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. The first Volume of the Bibliography covered seven journals published by MCB University Press. This Volume now indexes 25 journals, indicating the greater depth, coverage and expansion of the subject areas concerned.

Abstract

Looks at the developments and trends taking place in how companies organize their industrial salesforces. Investigates the reasons why companies have restructured their salesforces and what marketing objectives have been sought when making organizational changes. Examines marketing information generated from salespeople working within different organizational patterns. Suggests that salesforces are being restructured with the specific objective of increasing the flow of intelligence from the market‐place.

Abstract

The information contained in this article was collected during the course of a research study of the role and activities of industrial salesmen, particularly focusing on the types of information they generate as a result of their contacts in the market place. The article examines how certain companies are utilising the knowledge of industrial salesmen in product planning and development.

Abstract

Examines how potential conflicts can arise from differing evaluative criteria used by specialists of the marketing and finance functions in industry. Focuses on evaluating why marketing accountants in industry have become increasingly commonplace, and the benefits marketing accountants have brought to business operations. Lists six benefits with regard to marketing accountants and discusses these in detail. Weighs up, in conclusion, that marketing accountants provide an improved financial base on which marketing decisions can be examined, particularly with regard to decisions on new product development. States that the marketing accountant, through the provision of relevant and timely data, is starting to ensure such feelings and misconceptions are becoming less commonplace.

Abstract

The job description “marketing accountant” is increasingly seen in job advertisements, and this paper reports the results of a study into how companies use their “marketing accountants”; what they envisage the job description to mean, and what tasks these specialists are called upon to perform.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a non‐equilibrium viscous shock layer (VSL) solution procedure that considerably improves computational efficiency, especially for long slender bodies.

Design/methodology/approach

The VSL equations are solved in a shock oriented coordinate system. The method of solution is spatial marching, implicit, finite‐difference technique, which includes coupling of the normal momentum and continuity equations. In the nose region, the shock shape is specified from an algebraic expression and corrected through global passes through that region. The shock shape is computed as part of the solution beyond the nose region and requires only a single global pass. For this study, a seven‐species (O2, N2, O, N, NO, NO+, e) air model is used.

Findings

The present approach eliminates the need for initial shock shape, which was required by previous method of solution. This method generates its own shock shape as a part of solution and the input shock shape obtained from a different solution is not required. Therefore, in comparison with the other VSL methods, the present approach dramatically reduces the CPU time of calculations. Moreover, by using the shock oriented coordinate systems the junction point problem in sphere‐cone configurations is solved.

Practical implications

This method is an excellent tool for parametric study and preliminary design of hypersonic vehicles.

Originality/value

The present method provides a computational capability which reduces the CPU time, and expands the range of application for the prediction of hypersonic heating rates.

Abstract

Summarizes the basic structure of a general multi‐stage salesforce model, and presents experiences in implementing that framework. Discusses the benefits of the use of such a model, and concludes that the key to success for a small company to be based on using subjective estimates of the needs of a firm in the absence of hard data and on operational involvement of decision makers.

Abstract

In a university/district collaboration, three college professors and authors of this chapter co-taught with four teachers over a period of seven years. This study explores the perceived changes in thought and practice of both groups as a result of providing three-week summer school programs for fifth and eighth grade emergent bilinguals. This research is grounded in qualitative methodologies of self-study and case study. We present our joint story as a self-study. Data were collected in the form of lesson plan notes, yearly journals, personal notes, audiotapes of meetings, and in-depth interviews/discussions of those involved in the bounded context. Resulting themes were situated meaning, hybrid language, and a 5R Instructional Model. A case study design is used to present the data from the four in-service teachers. Data were collected from field notes and interviews. Several themes emerged from the teacher data, all of which are components of situated meaning: professional development as side-by-side teaching and learning, recognition of and interest in curriculum integration, and change in classroom practice. Findings indicate that the summer program was a meaningful avenue for professional development (PD) for both groups. However, within group similarities were stronger than across group. The experience changed the way we teach and how we develop PD for teachers. The implications for professors and K-12 teachers are discussed and suggestions for further study and PD are given.
