Abstract
Interest in employee mindfulness has increased dramatically in recent years, fueled by several important conceptual articles, numerous studies documenting the benefits of mindfulness for employee outcomes, and the adoption of mindfulness-based practices in many Fortune 500 organizations. Despite this growing interest, the vast majority of research on employee mindfulness has taken an intrapersonal focus, failing to appreciate the ways in which mindfulness may enhance work-related relational processes and outcomes. The authors explore possible associations between mindfulness and relationally oriented workplace phenomena, drawing from interdisciplinary scholarship examining mindfulness in romantic relationships, child–parent relationships, patient–healthcare provider relationships, and student–teacher relationships. A framework is proposed that links mindfulness to three distinct relationally oriented processes, which are expected to have downstream effects on work-related relational outcomes. The authors then take the proposed framework and discuss possible extensions to a variety of unique workplace relationships and discuss critical next steps in advancing the relational science of mindfulness.

Abstract
In this chapter, the authors build on the voluntary turnover model posited by Allen, Bryant, and Vardaman (2010) with reference to turnover and retention within the United Kingdom. After providing important contextual material about the United Kingdom, the authors explore turnover drivers such as work precarity, as well as the effect of Brexit, which compounds the political and economic uncertainty engendered by the pandemic. Reflecting on the role of external shocks in precipitating withdrawal processes, the authors go on to examine the extent to which job embeddedness impacts on employee turnover, and how alternative opportunities in a UK context may shape the decisions people make to stay with or leave their organizations. Central to our argument is that human resource (HR) practices as perceived by employees play a critical role in shaping attitudes such that people wish to stay in the organization. Cultural values posited by Hofstede and others are likely to significantly impact the way in which employees respond to the HR practices they perceive. Hence, leaders and HR specialists in the United Kingdom need to deploy HR practices which speak to cultural values that stand out in that context, considering that the United Kingdom is characterized by relatively low levels of power distance, low uncertainty avoidance, high individualism and higher than average indulgence.
Taken together, the model provides an overview of key internal and external factors that influence employees’ attitudes at work, their withdrawal behaviors and the ensuing turnover at the organizational-level. The authors conclude by highlighting key research questions raised by the analysis of the model within a UK context, considering where empirical research will add to understanding about turnover and retention in the United Kingdom.

Abstract
Transonic flutter and active flap control, in two dimensions, are simulated by coupling independent structural dynamic and inviscid aerodynamic models, in the time domain. A flight control system, to actively control the trailing edge flap motion, has also been incorporated and, since this requires perfect synchronisation of fluid, structure and control signal, the “strong” coupling approach is adopted. The computational method developed is used to perform transonic aeroelastic and aeroservoelastic calculations in the time domain, and used to compute stability (flutter) boundaries of 2D wing sections. Open and closed loop simulations show that active control can successfully suppress flutter and results in a significant increase in the allowable speed index in the transonic regime. It is also shown that active control is still effective when there is free‐play in the control surface hinge. Flowfield analysis is used to investigate the nature of flutter and active control, and the fundamental importance of shock wave motion in the vicinity of the flap is demonstrated.

THE advent of the modern jet‐type power plant for aviation has greatly accelerated the development of new high‐temperature ceramic materials. These power plants are essentially high‐temperature engines which convert heat energy into work. The greater the differential in temperature of the air between the beginning and end of the conversion, the greater the efficiency of the engine. Consequently, turbo‐jets, gas turbines, ram‐jets and rockets have created a demand for materials which will withstand elevated temperatures and vibration and possess good resistance to thermal shock. Ceramic materials seem to offer the best promise of providing these desirable characteristics.
