Abstract

As logistics talents in both Taiwan and Hong Kong are expanding their work area to Greater China, it is best to understand the competencies that logistics talents should possess. With this in mind, this study takes Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan as the study scope, as well as logistics teaching and research experts and scholars as the study objects. The research findings can not only serve as informative references for universities intent on cultivating logistics talents, but as well as enhance the scope of both Taiwan and Hong Kong talents’ competence that can pave the way to the development of the logistics business in Greater China.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the static stiffness of hydrostatic bearings with three constant compensations in types of constant‐flow pump, capillary and orifice, and both single‐action and double‐action variable restrictors with cylindrical‐spool, tapered‐spool, and membrane types by film gradient and recess pressure.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper utilizes the equations of flow equilibrium to determine the variations of film thickness or displacement of loading table with respect to the varying of recess pressure. For a hydrostatic bearing whose recess pressures are controlled by compensations, the stiffness characteristics can be presented directly by these variations.

Findings

The usage range of recess pressure and compensation parameters should be selected to correspond to a variation with smallest gradient.

Originality/value

This paper proposes an extensive database as a critical requirement for the selection of types and parameters of the compensation as to yield the acceptable or optimized characteristics in design of hydrostatic bearings.

Abstract

The library CD‐ROM database with its enormous storage and retrieving from network capabilities, has been gradually replacing some of its printed counterparts. But one of the disadvantages is that it can only access the full‐text image CD‐ROM database via local area network environment. This paper proposes a new method to solve this problem. The method uses hash function as data structure and image document process technique to perform a practical library full‐text image CD‐ROM database retrieving system. The results of its function can reduce users storage space, allow multi‐users to retrieve the same CD‐ROM database, and allow users to retrieve and print out full text image CD‐ROM database via campus network.

Abstract

Process capability indices can be viewed as convenient and excellent tools to measure and define process output. Several capability indices including Cp, Cpu, Cpl, Cpk, Cpm and Cpp have been widely used in manufacturing industry to provide common quantitative measures on process potentials and performance. Process capability inex Cpp can be used to measure product capability with respect to process targeting. “The larger the better” is the general rule for the application of process capability indices Cp, Cpu, Cpl, Cpk and Cpm. However, those researchers take accounts for processes with single quality characteristics only and cannot be applied to a product family with different models, types or sizes simultaneously. the approach of this paper is to propose a concise and applicable methodology that measures the entire process capability of a product family with several models. For convenient and practical application to product engineers, a simple procedure of hypothesis test for entire process capability of a PVC pipe product familiy is well established.

Abstract

Based on the character of R‐C frame, the calculation formula of VED is derived from the sub‐structure plan of lateral resistant force, the definition of equivalent stiffness matrix and equivalent additional viscoelastic force vector of VED is given and the seismic dynamic equation of R‐C frame controlled by VED is set up, the viscoelastic additional force vector of VED should be considered as outside load of structure and be calculated through the pseudo‐loading method, the programs of calculating the dynamic characteristic, calculating the elastic seismic response and calculating the elastic‐plastic seismic response of R‐C frame controlled by VED are compiled. Through the calculation of a inclined crossed R‐C frame, the results show that VED is effective in controlling the seismic response of frame and the pseudo‐loading method is reliable in the calculation.

Abstract

This article summarises a 1989 survey on the use of optical products in libraries and information centres in Western Europe. Out of a total of over 13,500 questionnaires distributed to eighteen countries, some 23% were returned and of these just under 10% said they were using optical products (primarily CD‐ROMs) in their libraries or information centres. Nearly half of the respondents who were using CD‐ROMs had acquired only one product, which, in the main, was used by library staff as opposed to end users. This accounts for the high popularity of products such as Books in Print, BL/BN Pilot disk, BookBank, Ulrich Plus and Verzeichnis lieferbarer Bücher—though Medline was the single most used disc. Many respondents had not yet had their CD‐ROM products long enough to be able to give much information on their experience with them or the impact on users. Where details were provided, it was plain that the optical products seemed to be appreciated by users, contributed to greater information awareness and permitted the library to offer a better and faster service. It is interesting to note that these are exactly the kinds of things that libraries not yet using optical products expected to achieve if and when they did use them. While CD‐ROMs had reduced online searching to some extent, feelings were mixed regarding the pros and cons of various optical products. Searching may have been speeded up, but too infrequent updating of the information was seen as a negative factor together with the price. The price or cost of optical products as well as lack of a suitable budget was also cited by many as the reason for not getting such products in the foreseeable future. In fact, nearly 60% of those replying they were not using optical products in their libraries said they would not be getting them. It is clear that it is the bigger academic libraries with a large collection, a lot of staff and a large user community which are presently using CD‐ROMs and other optical technologies.
