Abstract
The pleasantness of a food declines with consumption and this phenomenon has been demonstrated reliably in the short‐term. To investigate long‐term effects of repeat consumption on pleasantness, preference and intake, 21 volunteers consumed either a salty snack (french fries) or sweet snack (chocolate) every day for 15 days. Four dependent variables were measured: pleasantness ratings, ranked preference, frequency of consumption and ad libitum intake. Daily pleasantness of taste ratings decreased across the exposure period only for chocolate. Ranked preference for chocolate declined during the sweet snack condition and increased during the salty snack condition. Preference for french fries remained the same during the salty snack condition and increased during the sweet snack condition. Frequency of consuming chocolate outside the laboratory decreased during the sweet snack exposure. No such pattern was found for french fries in either condition. Ad libitum intake in the laboratory remained the same over time for both foods. Short‐term sensory‐specific satiety within the eating episode was consistent over time. Therefore, long‐term monotony effects were found only for pleasantness, preference and frequency of eating chocolate following repeated exposure, but these changes had no impact on ad libitum intake. Systematic, repeat exposure to a single food provides a useful paradigm for investigating the development of monotony.

Abstract
At the beginning of the 20th century, three intertwined ambitions drove federal legislation over wildlife and biodiversity: establishment of multiple-use federal lands, the economic development of natural resources, and the maintenance of option values. We examine this federal intervention in natural resource use by analyzing roll call votes over the past century with a Random Utility Model (Manski, 1977) and conclude that economics mattered. So did ideology, but not uniformly. After World War II, the pro-environment vote which had been conservative shifted to being liberal. All these votes involved decisions regarding public land that reallocated the returns to users by changing the asset’s physical character or its usage rights. We suggest that long-term consequences affecting current resource allocations arose from disparities between broadly dispersed benefits and locally concentrated socioeconomic and geophysical (spatial) costs. We show that a primary intent of public land management has become to preserve multiple-use option values and identify important factors in computing those option values. We do this by demonstrating how the willingness to forego current benefits for future ones depends on the community’s resource endowments. These endowments are defined not only in terms of users’ current wealth accumulation but also from their expected ability to extract utility from natural resources over time.

Abstract
The management of children′s literature is a search for value and suitability. Effective policies in library and educational work are based firmly on knowledge of materials, and on the bibliographical and critical frame within which the materials appear and might best be selected. Boundaries, like those between quality and popular books, and between children′s and adult materials, present important challenges for selection, and implicit in this process are professional acumen and judgement. Yet also there are attitudes and systems of values, which can powerfully influence selection on grounds of morality and good taste. To guard against undue subjectivity, the knowledge frame should acknowledge the relevance of social and experiential context for all reading materials, how readers think as well as how they read, and what explicit and implicit agendas the authors have. The good professional takes all these factors on board.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the processability by selective laser melting (SLM) of materials of potential interest for innovative biodegradable implants, pure Fe and pure Zn. The processability of these materials is evaluated with a more established counterpart in permanent implants, stainless steel. In particular, the processing conditions were studied to reduce porosity due to incomplete fusion of the powder.
Design/methodology/approach
In the first phase of the experiments, SLM of AISI 316L was studied through design of experiments method. The study was used to identify the significant parameters in the experimental range and estimate the fluence ranges for pure Fe and pure Zn using the lumped heat capacity model. In the second phase, SLM of pure Fe and pure Zn were studied using estimated fluence ranges. In the final phase, best conditions were characterized for mechanical properties.
Findings
The results showed that complete melting of AISI 316L and pure Fe could be readily achieved, whereas laser melting generated a foam-like porous structure in Zn samples. The mechanical properties of laser melt implant materials were compared to as-cast and rolled counterparts. Laser melted AISI 316L showed superior mechanical performance compared to as-cast and rolled material, whereas Fe showed mechanical performance similar to rolled mild steel. Despite 12 per cent apparent porosity, laser melted Zn exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to as-cast and wrought material because of reduced grain size.
Originality/value
The paper provides key processing knowledge on the SLM processability of new biodegradable metals, namely, pure Fe, which has been studied sparingly, and pure Zn, on which no previous work is available. The results prefigure the production of new biodegradable metallic implants with superior mechanical properties compared to their polymeric counterparts and with improved degradation rates compared to magnesium alloys, the reference material for biodegradable metals.
