While at Surface Mount International in August of 1994, I remember seeing hundreds and hundreds of people intently interested in and focused on the content of the presentations at the technical conference part of the event. A fair number of people on the show floor were also intently focused on the technologies and services that the exhibitors had available. Mixtures of business negotiations and technical discussions permeated the booths and the aisles throughout the exhibition centre. What's the big deal? Technology!

The Surface Mount Technology Association, SMTA, established in 1984, is a non‐profit, international association of companies and individuals (2700 members) involved in all aspects of surface mount technology (SMT). The Association is dedicated to the advancement of SMT and companion technologies through member education and interaction. Members range from those contemplating surface mount implementation, through current users of SMT, to those who are widely recognised in the industry as SMT champions.
