Abstract

Purpose

Optimization of resources related to man, money, manpower and those related to organization is critical in context of after-sales supply chains. Many times, organizational objectives in terms of resource optimization and providing superior customer experience might be conflicting, however.

Design/methodology/approach

One such instance is when customers expect near 100% service level in which case the organizational costs to meet such high service level goes up significantly. To this end, in this research a novel bi-objective optimization model has been evolved for a typical after-sales service supply chain network constituted of the manufacturer, the retailer and the customer. The first objective function pertains to maximization of the manufacturer's and the retailer's profit. The second objective function is related to the minimization of tardiness of order fulfilment (by the retailer) for the customer.

Findings

Employing a small problem instance, the authors generate a number of findings related to service level and information asymmetry. In particular, the authors observe that achieving best possible manufacturer-retailer profit and at the same time 100% service level is a mathematical impossibility. Furthermore, reducing information asymmetry between the customer and the retailer (as opposed to reducing information asymmetry between the retailer and the manufacturer) actually yields higher profits for the manufacturer-retailer pair.

Originality/value

This research describes the mathematical structure of a three-tier after-sales supply chain wherein information quality and service level requirements are key constraints. Furthermore, the study evolves the bi-objective optimization model as a formulation that can drive the operational decisions of manufacturers and retailers who are part of such after-sales service supply chains.

Case overview/synopsis

Ankit Tripathi, was a compassionate 22-year-old, the typical lad from New Delhi, India, who seemed driven to change the world. His elder brother Atul Tripathi, a young, creative 25-year-old, was sat there next to him, beaming with pride and gratitude. Both brothers, being mechanical engineering graduates, had experienced the advancement of technology at the cost of Mother Earth. It pained them no end. It was the reason that Atul had refused to serve as an engineer in a government institution after graduating. The parents were shocked when Ankit followed suit. The brothers were poles apart in their personality and temperament, and it was rare to see them agree on anything in this way. Yet, they agreed to disagree with their parents and ventured into becoming entrepreneurs with a purpose and passion to salvage the environment. They had a vision, but without a proper roadmap, it would certainly be a tough game. Nevertheless, they boldly embarked upon their journey and established their start-up “Uneako” in 2019. “Uneako” was a calculated risk, taking into account family resistance (parents’ attitude/perception), personal conflicts (psychological), financial limitations (resources), shallow expertise (professionalism), social concern acceptability and low awareness (environment), government regulations (legalities/approvals), conflicts between brothers (personality issues), etc. Being from a nonbusiness family, the brothers had defied the wave of obstacles and challenges in daring to start their own business, putting at stake the hard-earned money of their father, Satendra Tripathi. Amidst so much social mockery, would Atul and Ankit succumb and become a laughing stock or would they find something that they could live and die for?

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to numerically investigate the two-dimensional unsteady laminar magnetohydrodynamic bioconvection flow and heat transfer of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian Casson thin film with uniform thickness over a horizontal elastic sheet emerging from a slit in the presence of viscous dissipation. The composite effects of variable heat, mass, nanoparticle volume fraction and gyrotactic micro-organism flux are considered as is hydrodynamic (wall) slip. The Buongiorno nanoscale model is deployed which features Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. The model studies the manufacturing fluid dynamics of smart magnetic bio-nano-polymer coatings.

Design/methodology/approach

The coupled non-linear partial differential boundary-layer equations governing the flow, heat and nano-particle and micro-organism mass transfer are reduced to a set of coupled non-dimensional equations using the appropriate transformations and then solved as an nonlinear boundary value problem with the semi-numerical Liao homotopy analysis method (HAM).Validation with a generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) numerical technique is included.

Findings

An increase in velocity slip results in a significant decrement in skin friction coefficient and Sherwood number, whereas it generates a substantial enhancement in Nusselt number and motile micro-organism number density. The computations reveal that the bioconvection Schmidt number decreases the micro-organism concentration and boundary-layer thickness which is attributable to a rise in viscous diffusion rate. Increasing bioconvection Péclet number substantially elevates the temperatures in the regime, thermal boundary layer thickness, nanoparticle concentration values and nano-particle species boundary layer thickness. The computations demonstrate the excellent versatility of HAM and GDQ in solving nonlinear multi-physical nano-bioconvection flows in thermal sciences and furthermore are relevant to application in the synthesis of smart biopolymers, microbial fuel cell coatings, etc.

Research limitations/implications

The numerical study is valid for two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar Casson film flow with nanoparticles over an elastic sheet in presence of variable heat, mass and nanoparticle volume fraction flux. The film has uniform thickness and flow is transpiring from slit which is fixed at origin.

Social implications

The study has significant applications in the manufacturing dynamics of nano-bio-polymers and the magnetic field control of materials processing systems. Furthermore, it is relevant to application in the synthesis of smart biopolymers, microbial fuel cell coatings, etc.

Originality/value

The originality of the study is to address the simultaneous effects of unsteady and variable surface fluxes on Casson nanofluid transport of gyrotactic bio-convection thin film over a stretching sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Validation of HAM with a GDQ numerical technique is included. The present numerical approaches (HAM and GDQ) offer excellent promise in simulating such multi-physical problems of interest in thermal thin film rheological fluid dynamics.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between organizational social capital, university image, perceived employability and career satisfaction of information technology (IT) professionals. It also aims to investigate the moderating effects of diverse age groups of IT professionals on the antecedents and consequences of career satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Variance-based partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was used to analyze a dataset of 412 responses from IT professionals. The predictive relevance of career satisfaction was estimated through PLS predict, and the relative importance of determinants was analyzed through importance-performance map analysis (IPMA). PLS Multi-group analysis (PLS-MGA) and measurement invariance of composites (MICOM) were used to estimate the moderating effects of age groups.

Findings

The findings of this study indicate that university image is perceived as the crucial factor for career satisfaction by IT professionals followed by perceived employability and organizational social capital. Gender was found to be a positive predictor of career satisfaction. PLS-MGA results indicate that organizational social capital is a prominent predictor of career satisfaction for middle-aged professionals as compared to young professionals as the latter consider university image to be more important.

Originality/value

This is the first study to examine the relationship between organizational social capital, university image, perceived employability, and career satisfaction of IT professionals in a developing country context.

Abstract

Purpose

The unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) described in this manuscript is a robot designed by the authors to map the underground mine environments. The UGV works to develop a computational intelligence-based cyber-physical system (CPS)-based analytical framework for mining operations. The UGV demonstrated excellent semi-autonomous navigation capabilities in the absence of GNSS signals. The UGV has a suite that works in unison to provide relevant information. These sensors are integrated to form a robust sensor fusion-based architecture, creating a CPS with a wide range of capabilities such as data acquisition and navigation in challenging underground environments. UGVs can be used to enhance the efficacy of safety inspections, rescue during underground emergencies and assist miners in hazardous conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, an UGV was constructed whose operations are enabled by sensors including a D415i Red Blue Green (RGB) depth camera, a LiDAR, a FLIR C5 infrared camera and smart air quality sensors. This sensor fusion-based architecture forms a CPS. Data obtained remotely are processed by deep learning algorithms to achieve overall capabilities such as real-time image analysis for miner identification, object detection, posture analysis and identifying threats of roof falls and overhangs. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms create a 3D map, facilitate autonomous navigation and build a decision support system for delivering mine rescue support.

Findings

The aim of this study is to include this capacity in training situations when it has been validated and authorized by the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) Indian government regulatory agency for safety in mines and oil fields. The longwall demo mine, at IIT (ISM) is being used as the site of the first operations. Once approved by the respective enforcement agencies, this technology and the accompanying rescue and training process can be used in underground operations.

Originality/value

In fact, this paper is the first attempt at remotely operated UGVs based on CPSs, the CPS–UGV in Indian mine conditions, so as to revolutionize Indian mines based on the idea of Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design a DSS for construction sectors, which can determine the status of the related supplier alternatives, accompanying G-T, SC measures and their interrelated metrics. In today’s era, a supplier is observed as significant among entire agents of green supply chain (SC) management. Presently, it is determined that appraising worth of the supplier under green-traditional (G-T), SCs concerns still require the support of novel algorithmic/decision support systems (DSSs), which could embrace potential decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have proposed a DSS (consisting of the implementation of multi-level multi-criterion decision-making [ML-MCDM], reference point approach [RPA] and multi-objective optimization on the basis of simple ratio analysis [MOOSRA] methods on constructed MCDM supplier evaluation appraisement module) for measuring the performance score of clay-brick suppliers coming under G-T SCs corresponding to fuzzy and non-fuzzy information. A comparative analysis is conducted among the performance scores against alternatives, obtained by the three methods, i.e. ML-MCDM, RPA and MOOSRA, for robustly making a potential decision.

Findings

The presented research offers a DSS toward managers of construction sectors for benchmarking the performance scores against supplier alternatives under G-T SC measures and their interrelated metrics, modeled by fuzzy cum non-fuzzy information.

Originality/value

Presented research work exhibited a DSS that can be used by construction sectors for benchmarking the supplier alternatives in accordance with their performance scores under G-T SCs. The MCDM G-T supplier evaluation appraisement module is constructed pertaining to small-scale clay-brick production units, located in the northern part of India to check the effectiveness of the proposed DSS.

Abstract

Purpose

Advanced manufacturing machines (AMMs) are searched as a momentous asset across the manufacturing societies for quenching and addressing the production units under economical circumstances, i.e. production of high-quality of goods under feasible cost. AMMs are significant in holding the managers against their rivals and competitors with high profit margins. The authors developed the decision support mechanism/portfolio (DSM-P) consist of knowledge-based cluster approach with a dynamic model. The purpose of research work is to measure overall economic worth of AMMs under objective and grey-imperfect (mixed) data by exploring the proposed DSM-P.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors developed the DSM-P that consist of knowledge-based cluster, three multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques-1-2-3 with complementary grey relational analysis-4(GRA), approach with a dynamic model (complied by technical plus cost and agility measures of AMMs). The proposed DSM-P enables the manager to map the overall economic worth of candidate AMMs under objective and grey-mixed data.

Findings

The presented DSM-P assist the managers for handling the selection problem of AMMs, i.e. CNCs, robots, automatic-guided vehicle, etc under mixed (objective cum grey) data. To enable the readers for intensely understand the work, the utility of proposed approach is displayed by illustrating a polar robot evaluation and selection problem. It is ascertained that the robot candidate-11 alternative is fulfilling the entire technical cum cost and agility measures.

Originality/value

The DSM-P provides more precise and reliable outcomes due to a usage of the dominance theory. Under the dominance theory, the ranks are obtained by MCDM techniques-1-2-3 are compared with ranks gathered by the GRA-4 under objective cum grey data, formed the novelties in presented research work. From a future perspective, the grey-based models in DSM-P can be built/extended/constructed more extensive and can be simulated by the same approach.

Abstract

Purpose

The occurrence of COVID-19 has impacted the wide-reaching dimensions of manufacturing, materials, procurement, management, etc., and has loaded disruptions in the wide range of supply chain (SC) activities. The impact of COVID-19 has twisted supplier performance and influenced stakeholders’ thinking towards selecting supplier sources and making strategic sourcing decision for convinced arrangement of construction management (CM) resources. Nowadays, suppliers are intently evaluated by stakeholders in post-COVID-19 phase to induce agile availability of CM resources. Accordingly, this paper aims to demonstrate competent CM dimensions under post COVID-19 scenario for ease managing construction projects by the stakeholders.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have implicated Grey Sets Theory along with decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) technique for understanding significant outcomes. Varieties of diverse decision aspects responsible for strategically influencing supplier sourcing decision is projected under post COVID-19 scenario for handling construction projects by the stakeholders.

Findings

This study investigated sustainable construction management dimensions (SCMD) at the stage of resource deliveries and client aspirations under post COVID-19 situation. The study demonstrated “Lead time” as the most crucial, “Product Range” as the second and “Customers dealings and relationship” as the third crucial aspect considering by the stakeholders for selecting supplier sources based on the attainment of performance score of 0.1338, 0.1273 and 0.1268, respectively. It is found that high lead time stimulates the stakeholders to divert their orders to other competent supplier sources holding a low degree of lead time as compared.

Research limitations/implications

The present study rollovers its existence by serving critical thinking, conceptual modelling, criteria identification and evaluation under CM domain for drafting effectual strategies by the suppliers. The study investigated the impact of COVID-19 on stakeholders’ decision-making and enlisted SCMD that strategically stimulated them in choosing supplier sourcing decision.

Originality/value

The present study realizes the insights of stakeholders in the post COVID-19 scenario related to the supplier sources based on performance score. The study quantified sustainable supplier attribute for construction work and practices. The study analysed the expectations of the stakeholders purchasing different varieties of construction materials from supplier sources for civil works in the post COVID-19 scenario.

Abstract

Purpose

“Paying for performance” has been the corporate mantra for ages, but finding the right performance benchmarks continues to be an enigma. Equally significant is the ongoing debate on the superiority of economic value added (EVA) aligned executive incentive plans over traditional financial performance benchmarks to ensure optimal goal congruence between the corporate and the executive performances. Consequently, this paper aims to explore a plausible linkage between executive compensation and EVA for Indian corporates from a social constructivist perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a mixed method approach where the quantitative analysis of responses from the survey of senior personnel/finance executives of Indian firms is complemented by the qualitative analysis of personal interviews to provide contextual depth to the quantitative data.

Findings

Based on the study, the researchers construct an understanding that EVA is a superior concept but has restricted utility primarily owing to its computational complexity and unaudited characteristics. The researchers’ interpretive inference finds mandatory disclosure of an audited EVA figure in the corporate financial statements as a prime requirement for EVA to emerge as an objective and visible performance measure.

Practical implications

Attention of policymakers is sought towards standardising its computation and ensuring its disclosure to bring it at par with the conventional executive financial performance benchmarks.

Originality/value

The narrative on benefits and the challenges of adopting EVA aligned performance management system is provided directly by the top-level executives responsible for designing the “paying for performance” policies.
