Abstract

Purpose

The high turnover rate of knowledge workers presents a challenge to both organizational and personal knowledge management. Although personal knowledge management plays an important role in organizational knowledge management, empirical research on the practices for its application is underdeveloped. This study aims to examine the role of idiosyncratic job-design practices (i.e. job definition, job autonomy, innovation as a job requirement and lifelong learning orientation) in cultivating personal knowledge management among knowledge workers in organizations, to increase their productivity and safeguard the organization against knowledge loss arising from knowledge workers’ interfirm mobility.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 221 knowledge workers pursuing various knowledge-intensive jobs through a questionnaire survey and were analysed using partial least squares modelling.

Findings

The results demonstrated that three job-design practices (job definition, innovation as a job requirement and lifelong learning orientation) have a positive impact on personal knowledge management among knowledge workers and thus improve their productivity. However, job autonomy can affect personal knowledge management negatively.

Research limitations/implications

The findings are confined to a specific context and should be replicated across different contexts for better generalizability in future research.

Practical implications

Organizational managers should pay attention to (re)designing knowledge-intensive jobs to cultivate personal knowledge management by clearly outlining job responsibilities, offering opportunities to add relevant job activities and drop irrelevant ones, and making innovation and lifelong learning a formal job requirement. In addition, job autonomy should be judiciously provided along with sufficient social and network support to avoid lost opportunities in knowledge creation and sharing, and should be linked to job responsibilities and performance appraisals to avoid negative effects.

Originality/value

The high turnover rate of knowledge workers presents a challenge to both organizational and personal knowledge management. This study contributes to the literature by addressing the research gap in two aspects. Firstly, based on Drucker’s theory, this study identifies four idiosyncratic job-design practices (job definition, job autonomy, innovation as a job requirement and lifelong learning orientation) that reflect the distinctive characteristics of knowledge-intensive work. Secondly, this study examines whether and how these practices can cultivate personal knowledge management among knowledge workers, which can support their productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to review the literature on how intellectual capital (IC) contributes to the decarbonization efforts of firms. It explores how carbon accounting can measure the components of IC in decarbonization efforts to balance profitability with environmental and social goals, particularly in promoting decent work and economic growth (Sustainable Development Goal [SDG] 8 and its targets [2, 5, 6, 8]). Moreover, it emphasises the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships for sharing knowledge, expertise, technology, and financial resources (SDG17-Target 17.G) to meet SDG8.

Design/methodology/approach

As a consolidated methodological approach, a systematic literature review (SLR) was used in this study to fill the existing research gaps in sustainability accounting. To consolidate and clarify scholarly research on IC towards decarbonization, 149 English articles published in the Scopus database and Google Scholar between 1990 and 2024 were reviewed.

Findings

The results highlight that the current research does not sufficiently cover the intersection of carbon accounting and IC in the analysis of decarbonization practices. Stakeholders and regulatory bodies are increasingly pressuring firms to implement development-focused policies in line with SDG8 and its targets, requiring the integration of IC and its measures in decarbonization processes, supported by SDG17-Target 17.G. This integration is useful for creating business models that balance profitability and social and environmental responsibilities.

Originality/value

The integration of social dimension to design sustainable business models for emission reduction and provide a decent work environment by focusing on SDG17-Target 17.G has rarely been investigated in terms of theory and practice. Through carbon accounting, IC can be a key source of SDG8-Targets 8.[2, 5, 6, 8] and SDG17-Target 17.G. Historically, these major issues are not easily aligned with accounting research or decarbonization processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to investigate the behavior of continuous hydromagnetic convective fluid within a porous medium. In this study, all fluid properties are assumed to remain constant, except for viscosity, which varies inversely with temperature. Additionally, the fluid experiences Newtonian heating, and the effects of the Dufour and Soret phenomena are considered. The study also examines how controlling constants affect the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles.

Design/methodology/approach

The model equations are transformed to ordinary differential equations adopting similarity transformations. The resulting coupled nonlinear differential equations are then solved numerically using the shooting method combined with the fourth order Runge-Kutta (RK-4) technique. The effects of varying parameters on the flow are presented through graphs and tables.

Findings

The consequences of supervising constants on the flow are encapsulated in charts. The findings are that the Biot number is crucial in determining the temperature distribution within a solid during transient heat transfer; a reduction in the velocity chart is experienced as the size of suction grows; the temperature distribution over the upright heated plate escalates dramatically as Dufour(Du) shot up; and a rise in fluid velocity as the Soret parameter increases. The current results are annotated in sketches for better understanding. Findings are authenticated in contrast with published works. Finally, viscosity dependent on temperature and Newtonian heating are crucial in determining the flow characteristics, heat transfer efficiency, pressure drop, flow stability and overall performance of fluid systems. Understanding and accounting for these variations are essential for the optimal design and operation of engineering applications involving fluids.

Originality/value

The peculiarity of the research is perusal of exploration of viscosity dependent on temperature and Newtonian heating above steady hydromagnetic convective flow in a percolating environment: Soret, Dufour consequences. To the best of authors’ understanding, problem like this has not been considered. The findings in this work will give a useful information to scientists and engineers.
