Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to perform the experimental work on a laboratory-constructed steel truss bridge model on which hammer blows are applied for excitation. The vibration response signals of the bridge structure are collected using sensors placed at different nodes. The different damaged states such as no damage, single damage, double damage and triple damage are introduced by cutting members of the bridge. The masked noise with recorded vibration responses generates challenge to properly analyze the health of bridge structure.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical modal properties are obtained from finite element model (FEM) developed using SAP2000 software. The response signals are analyzed in frequency domain by power spectrum and in time-frequency domain using spectrogram and Stockwell transform. Various low pass signal-filtering techniques such as variational filter, lowpass sparse banded (AB) filter and Savitzky–Golay (SG) differentiator filter are also applied to refine vibration signals. The proposed methodology further comprises application of Hilbert transform in combination with MUSIC and ESPRIT techniques.

Findings

The outcomes of SG filter provided the denoised signals using appropriate polynomial degree with proper selected window length. However, certain unwanted frequency peaks still appeared in the outcomes of SG filter. The SG-filtered signals are further analyzed using fused methodology of Hilbert transform-ESPRIT, which shows high accuracy in identifying modal frequencies at different states of the steel truss bridge.

Originality/value

The sequence of proposed methodology for denoising vibration response signals using SG filter with Hilbert transform-ESPRIT is a novel approach. The outcomes of proposed methodology are much refined and take less computational time.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to include the diagnosis of an old concrete deck steel truss rural road bridge in the damaged and retrofitted state through vibration response signals.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis of the vibration response signals is performed in time and time-frequency domains using statistical features-root mean square, impulse factor, crest factor, kurtosis, peak2peak and Stockwell transform. The proposed methodology uses the Hilbert transform in combination with spectral kurtosis and bandpass filtering technique for obtaining robust outcomes of modal frequencies.

Findings

The absence or low amplitude of considered mode shape frequencies is observed both before and after retrofitting of bridge indicates the deficient nodes. The kurtosis feature among all statistical approaches is able to reflect significant variation in the amplitude of different nodes of the bridge. The Stockwell transform showed better resolution of present modal frequencies but due to the yield of additional frequency peaks in the vicinity of the first three analytical modal frequencies no decisive conclusions are achieved. The methodology shows promising outcomes in eliminating noise and visualizing distinct modal frequencies of a steel truss bridge.

Social implications

The findings of the present study help in analyzing noisy vibration signals obtained from various structures (civil or mechanical) and determine vulnerable locations of the structure using mode shape frequencies.

Originality/value

The literature review gave an insight into few experimental investigations related to the combined application of Hilbert transform with spectral kurtosis and bandpass filtering technique in determining mode frequencies of a steel truss bridge.

Study level/applicability

The case can be used in sales management, channel management and rural marketing courses offered to graduate students of MBA degrees. In the sales management courses, the emphasis is on understanding the typical tasks that the rural salesperson is required to conduct. The case can be used to design a suitable motivation-mix for a rural salesperson after analysing their approach towards work. In a rural marketing course, the case can be used to understand the sales and distribution management of fast-moving consumer good products in rural India. The case can be used in channel management courses to design an appropriate channel structure in the rural market in India and utilized for managing the distributors’ salesforce for effective and improved market coverage in rural areas.

Case overview

Candy Confectioneries Private Limited started its operations in 1995, and was one of the largest confectionery players in India with a market share of 20 per cent. The company had achieved sales of Rs 20bn in 2014 and had 15 confectionery brands in the market. The company was also trying hard to establish itself in the snacks category. The company had nationwide operations, and it was important for the company to expand into the rural market. It served its markets through a comprehensive urban and rural distribution setup. In the rural distribution network, the rural sales representatives (RSRs) played a key role and perhaps were one of the most critical factors in covering the rural market. The RSR system was typical to suit the requirement of product-market coverage with its limitations. The case broadly profiles eight RSRs who were engaged to cover a specific territory in the State of Bihar in India. It also describes their approaches to work and complexities emerging thereof in achieving the best results for the organization.

Expected learning outcomes

The case has the following learning objectives: Understanding the design of sales and distribution channel structure followed for distribution and selling of confectionery products in rural India. Examining whether the existing system is adequate to achieve the goals of the firm. Evaluating the performance of each salesperson and identifying common factors to formulate the salesforce policies. Arriving at a suitable motivation-mix for the rural salesperson.

Abstract

Purpose

The Government of India is proposing the setting up of several new smart cities in the sub-continent. Being an over-populated country, space is at a premium. In congested areas high-rise buildings afford a solution. The purpose of this paper is to present new research involving architecture and computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) must be done at the screening stage of design plans before new cities are laid out. This is achieved in the present study involving a university residential campus with a population of 29,000 comprising of an assortment of high-rise buildings in complex terrain.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses a combination of instrument-fitted drone measurements – (equipped with a barometer, and sensors for obtaining temperature, relative humidity and altitude) along with a computational fluid dynamical analysis to yield deep insights into the ventilation patterns around an assortment of building forms.

Findings

This study was conducted in a residential complex in the campus of the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) India. Based on the deciphered wind velocity pattern, a human thermal comfort study was also conducted. It was concluded that the orientation of the buildings play a pivotal role in enhancing the ventilation rates inside a building. It was observed that a dominant eddy spanning a radius of approximate 34 meters was responsible for much of the air changes within the rooms – the smaller eddies had an insignificant role. This method of ascertaining eddy structures within a study area comprising of an assortment of buildings is essential for accurate prescriptions of glazing ratios on building facades.

Research limitations/implications

The main research implications pertain to the use of smart ventilation methods in built up environments. The study shows how large eddies drive the momentum transfer and the air changes per hour with rooms in high-rise buildings in complex terrain. In monsoon-driven flows, there are well set preferred directions of wind flow and this enables the characterization of the fully eddy structure in the vicinity of tall buildings. Another research implication would be the development of new turbulence closure models for eddy structure resolution for flow around complex building forms.

Practical implications

This study introduces a novel protocol at the planning stage of the upcoming residential complexes in proposed smart cities in the sub-continent. The results may well inform architects and structural engineers and help position and orient buildings in confined spaces and also ascertain the optimal glazing ratio, which affects the ventilation pattern.

Social implications

The results from this study can be used by town planners and architects in urban conurbations in the developing world. The results may well help lower heating ventilation and airconditioning loads. Energy-efficient buildings in developing countries are necessary because most of these have rapidly growing GDPs with a concomitant increase in energy consumption.

Originality/value

This novel study combining instrument mounted drone and CFDs shows for the first time how architects and town planners with a limited budget position and orient a group of buildings in a complex terrain.

Abstract

Purpose

The board of directors of an organization can contribute considerably to the transition to a sustainable global economy by accommodating environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures in the directors' business model. Along these lines, the purpose of this research is to understand the nexus between the board's structural attributes and sustainability disclosures in an emerging economy such as India.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors investigate this link using the system generalized method of moments (SGMM) panel regression on a sample of firms from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty 100 Index from 2013 to 2020. This econometric framework controls endogeneity among the variables, which has been a gap in the previous studies.

Findings

The authors find that board structural attributes, like board size, gender diversity, chief executive officer (CEO) duality and independence, have little bearing on sustainability disclosures of Indian companies. However, the board of directors, through the board's company's social responsibility (CSR) committee, strives for sustainability practices in Indian organizations. The authors also find that larger companies are more willing to disclose on ESG efforts than smaller ones, but the financial performance of the smaller ones (as proxied by Tobin's Q) does not matter.

Research limitations/implications

This study is restricted to a sample of large cap listed companies and specific environment, resulting in the non-generalizability of the findings to different contexts because countries vary in their state of economic development, internal policy, regulations and governance.

Practical implications

A mandated CSR committee has helped Indian businesses to publicize their sustainability efforts. Besides the frontrunner in CSR regulations, Indian organizations have paid least attention to the environmental pillar of the ESG framework. Accordingly, the board of directors should put more emphasis on the environmental aspects of their business' sustainability efforts to help achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the medium term and net neutrality in the long term.

Originality/value

From the standpoint of an emerging economy like India, which has statutory CSR mandates for firms, this research adds a fresh perspective on the relationship between corporate governance and corporate responsibility by employing stakeholder theory, which is further substantiated by the use of system GMM as a robust methodology. This study also emphasizes the significance of a mandatory CSR committee as a facilitator of sustainability practices and reporting in emerging economies.

Purpose: The primary purpose of this study is to understand how tourism companies are engaged in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives during “Hajj and Umrah” to build the Company's Brand image among Muslim pilgrims.

Design methodology and approach: The present study is exploratory and qualitative and follows a case-based approach. Data were collected mainly from secondary sources like newspapers, articles, news reports, agencies” reports, etc.

Findings: Companies increasingly strive to run their businesses ethically, responsibly, and with a conscience during Hajj and Umrah. Companies use their vast network and years of experience processing visas, providing transportation, lodging, and guiding during the journey, aiding people experiencing poverty, providing travel services, medical care, food distribution, and contributing to environmental projects. Building engagement with CSR initiatives wins long-term brand loyalty with internal and external audiences, making the company an agent of positive change. CSR activities during Hajj and Umrah also provide companies with global outreach opportunities. India companies engaged in CSR activities gained tax benefits under Section 37 of the Income Tax Act.

Original: Present study is interdisciplinary (Law & Management) in nature. The study on CSR has been conducted in many areas, but CSR activities during Hajjj and Umrah, a business strategy of brand building, have yet to be studied. The present study will help academicians in theory building and companies to understand the importance of CSR activities during Hajj and Umrah in strategic decision-making.

Abstract

Purpose

Green banking has evolved in the financial sector to reduce the negative impact of economic progress. However, customers’ behavior remains indifferent towards bank’s green initiatives across nations. Therefore, this study examines the various factors affecting the behavior of Indian banking customers towards green banking by extending the theory of planned behavior (TPB).

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a quantitative research approach and distributed a self-administered questionnaire. Data from the 293 green banking service users in India’s Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) have been collected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. SPSS 26 and SmartPLS 3 were used to analyze data.

Findings

The findings explained that environmental concern substantially predicts customer attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavior control towards green banking. Moreover, all the constructs within the TPB model were found to substantially impact customers’ inclination to adopt green banking, thereby leading to actual behavior.

Research limitations/implications

Academically, the findings have broadened the TPB model’s application by adding a new construct in the context of green banking while confirming its applicability. Practically, it advises financial regulators and banking personnel to prioritize establishing a conducive environment for customers, characterized by the accessibility of green banking services under favorable conditions and at affordable rates.

Originality/value

The study enhanced the understanding towards green banking by correlating different variables and extending the TPB model using SmartPLS 3 in the domain of green banking.

Abstract

Purpose

The study investigates the relationship between social presence dimensions and customer brand engagement (CBE) as well as the relation between customer brand engagement and purchase intention (PI) in the fashion retail metaverse with self-efficacy moderating between CBE and PI.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were gathered by conducting an online survey (n = 476) from young adults exposed to fashion retail metaverse platforms. The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The findings discovered that social presence dimensions positively impact CBE, which substantially impacts the PI of young consumers in the fashion retail metaverse. The findings demonstrate that self-efficacy moderates the relationship between CBE and PI.

Research limitations/implications

This study uses cross-sectional data in the fashion retail metaverse for young consumers. Future studies can use longitudinal data in the context of other industries and demographic profiles to assess changing customer behavior.

Practical implications

This study implies that customer experiences can be enriched through social presence dimensions, helping brands adapt their offers to create more engaging and rewarding customer interactions. It offers insights for brand managers aiming to augment the relationship between CBE and PI.

Originality/value

The study uniquely explores the relationship between social presence dimensions and CBE within the fashion retail metaverse. It examines self-efficacy as a moderator between CBE and PI, providing fresh insights into consumer behavior in the fashion retail metaverse.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to enhance early-stage cost estimation in construction projects, a critical factor in project feasibility, funding, resource allocation and scheduling. Traditional cost estimation approaches suffer from limitations such as the absence of structured methodologies, assumptions of linear cost relationships, prolonged processes and expert judgment variations. To address these challenges, this study proposes a reliable cost prediction model based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) for building construction projects in India.

Design/methodology/approach

To develop cost prediction model, this study collected data from 377 building construction projects in India, encompassing 17 essential cost parameters. The methodology involves data preprocessing, constructing features and fine-tuning ANN hyperparameters meticulously to achieve optimal performance.

Findings

The research showcases effectiveness of cost prediction model, evident in significantly reduced mean square error values. ANN-based prediction model excels in handling nonlinear cost dependencies and diverse project complexities, making it a valuable tool for early-stage cost estimation.

Research limitations/implications

ANN-based cost prediction model is primarily designed for predicting costs associated with structural works of building projects.

Practical implications

The proposed solution offers stakeholders a robust data-driven decision-making tool during initial phases of construction projects. This can lead to more successful and economically viable outcomes.

Originality/value

This research examines the drawbacks of traditional cost estimation methods by presenting a data-driven approach leveraging machine learning. It significantly improves precision of early cost forecasts in construction projects while offering practical value to industry.
