Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to extract colour from micro-organisms (as a source of natural pigments) using agro-industrial substrates to replace synthetic media by solid state fermentation. Nature is filled with colours. Due to health and environmental consciousness among people, use of synthetic colour has declined, and so the need to develop colour from cheap and easily available natural sources (plants, animals, micro-organisms and algae) using a cost-effective technique with higher yield and rapid growth. Monascus purpureus colour is a potent source of compounds (Dimerumic acid, Monacolin-k and -aminobutyric acid) having antimutagenic, antimicrobial and antiobesity, which helps in combating diseases.

Design/methodology/approach

Response surface methodology was used to optimise the biopigments extraction from Monascus purpureus using solid state fermentation.

Findings

The best optimised conditions for biopigments production using Monascus purpureus MTCC 369 were pH 5.4 at 32°C for 8 days 9 hours (8.9 days) from sweet potato peel and pea pod powder, 7.8 (w/w) and 3.9 per cent (w/w), respectively, which gave a final yield of 21 CVU/g. The model F-value of 69.18 and high value of adjusted determination coefficient 96.00 per cent implies high level of significance of the fitted model.

Practical implications

Extracted colour can be used in beverages, confectionery and pharmaceutical industries.

Social implications

Colour produced using Monascus purpureus MTCC 369 is a natural source. As consumers are reluctant to use synthetic colour because of the undesirable allergic reactions caused by them, so a biopigment produced is natural colouring compound with wide application in food sector.

Originality/value

Selected sources of carbon and nitrogen were not used earlier by any researcher to extract biopigment from Monascus purpureus MTCC 369.

Abstract

Purpose

Biopigments, natural colors from microbiological origin are of great interest because of their potential advantages over synthetic colorants. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the best possible fermentative conditions for the maximum production of biopigment using solid state fermentation and submerged fermentation by Monascus purpureus MTCC 369.

Design/methodology/approach

The biopigment was produced using solid state fermentation and submerged with optimized substrate to achieve higher yield. The statistical analysis was carried out using a Microsoft Excel ® (Microsoft Corporation).

Findings

On comparative analysis, it was observed that solid state fermentation resulted significant accumulation of biopigment (9.0 CVU/g) on the 9th day in comparison to submerged fermentation (5.1 CVU/g) on the 15th day.

Practical implications

Results revealed that sweet potato peel powder and pea pods provides necessary nutrients required for mycelial growth, and biopigment production, therefore, can be used as potent substrate for biopigment production by Monascus purpureus MTCC 369. Extracted color can be used in confectionery, beverages and pharmaceutical industries.

Originality/value

This work focuses on utilisation of waste for production of pigment as alternative source to synthetic colorant, and few studies have been carried out using wastes, but no work has been carried out on sweet potato peel to the best of the authors’ knowledge.

Abstract

This chapter explores the phenomenon of organizational resilience. A comprehensive model was advanced and tested while utilizing a quantitative study conducted in the education system in Israel with 98 schools, involving 1,132 educators. Statistical analysis based on structural equation modeling revealed significant relationships between three antecedents (social capital, team empowerment, goal interdependence) and organizational resilience. In addition, a positive significant relationship was found between organizational resilience and organizational functioning in crisis. Organizational resilience was found to be a mediator between three of the antecedents (social capital, team empowerment, goal interdependence) and organizational functioning in crisis. Furthermore, organizational functioning in crisis was found to mediate the relationship between organizational resilience and organizational innovation. Implications for policymakers, managers, and change leaders in organizations are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The Chinese market presents numerous challenges to companies from industrialized nations, none of which is as daunting as protecting intellectual property (IP). It is necessary to develop a fresh approach for the US, EU and Japanese governments and companies to take advantage of China's growing domestic market while not exposing their IP to continued losses. This paper seeks to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is based on review of existing literature on IP rights infringements in China, application of theory of sustainable competitive advantage as a prescription to discourage imitation and promote early‐mover advantages, and SWOT analysis of the contrasting US and Japanese IP strategies.

Findings

Both US and Japanese IP strategies have advantages and disadvantages, but the question remains who can be the most creative and adaptive in their ultimate goal of preserving their IP rights while prospering in the world's largest marketplace.

Practical implications

Apart from internal use, IP may also be commercialized through a joint venture, outright sales, franchising, or licensing. Using creative but proven methods to protect IP is another way to equalize the playing field. Companies can operate in regions where IP laws are strictly enforced and they should work with, and not against, their counterparts in China.

Originality/value

IP strategies of US and Japan in China provide a number of valuable insights on distinctive approaches used. A prescriptive approach is outlined for companies from the industrialized world to manage their efforts in protecting IP in an emerging market with a vastly different social and economic structure.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study has been carried out to assess the effect of constructs of service convenience on customer satisfaction of the Indian online shoppers.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling has been used to choose a sample (n = 260) of e-shoppers in India. Factor analyses (both EFA and CFA) have been done to validate different factors and its items. A conceptual model has been proposed to measure the effect of different factors of service convenience on customer satisfaction. Moreover, the perceived difference with respect to study variables has been measured. The path analysis through AMOS 22.0 has been done to test the hypotheses under study.

Findings

It can be concluded that the effect of access convenience, search convenience, and order convenience have significant effects on customer satisfaction. However, evaluation convenience and logistics and reverse logistics convenience have an insignificant effect on customer satisfaction. The present study has a unique contribution in the field of service convenience to e-retailing customers. Moreover, the present study indicates that gender does not moderate the effect of convenience on customer satisfaction.

Originality/value

This is one of the few papers that focuses solely on the effect of gender on service convenience and customer satisfaction. The findings will generate value with their originality and significant managerial implications for marketers, as well as future research directions for the researchers.

Abstract

Purpose

This research sought to document the volume, development trend and geographical distribution of the research on teacher autonomy, identify high-impact journals, authors and documents and reveal the intellectual structure of the field.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyzed the articles published on the related subject in the Web of Science (WoS) and/or Scopus. Based on certain exclusion criteria, analyses were conducted on a total of 259 articles. The data were then subjected to descriptive analyses and bibliometric analyses.

Findings

The review found that the teacher autonomy knowledge base has grown dramatically since 2004. In the co-citation analysis, it was determined that four clusters focused on the themes of professionalism and professional development, leadership and self-efficacy, autonomy in language teaching and learning and self-determination theory. According to the co-word analysis in this review, the most co-occurring keywords were revealed to be “teacher autonomy,” “autonomy,” “teachers,” “teacher professionalism” and “professional development.”

Originality/value

Despite increasing numbers of systematic reviews focusing on educational administration and leadership, this paper represents the first bibliometric review conducted to reveal the development of research on teacher autonomy using both the WoS and Scopus databases. Teacher autonomy can be regarded as an emerging field of study backed up by a theoretical background. Although there are some distinct prominent scholars in the research area, autonomy research still needs more scholars to specialize in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

To analyze the influence of emotional intelligence on team performance, knowledge sharing, team conflict, and the structure mechanism, the influence of knowledge sharing, team conflict, the structure mechanism, and emotional intelligence on team performance, and the influence of emotional intelligence on team performance through knowledge sharing, team conflict, and the structure mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses the quantitative research method and is included in explanatory research. Data collection was done cross-sectionally. This research was conducted at provincial hospitals in South Sulawesi and in Central Sulawesi.

Findings

Emotional intelligence directly influences knowledge sharing, conflict in teams, the structure mechanism, and team performance. There is a direct influence of knowledge sharing, team conflict, and the structure mechanism on team performance. Then, there is an indirect influence of emotional intelligence on team performance through the mediation of knowledge sharing, team conflict, and the structure mechanism.

Originality/value

The novelty of this research is in its effort to observe the mediation of knowledge sharing, team conflict and the structure mechanism with other variables developed in the research model. No previous studies have found a relationship between emotional intelligence and team performance, knowledge sharing, team conflict, and the structure mechanism, or the influence of knowledge sharing, team conflict, the structure mechanism, and emotional intelligence on team performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Telemedicine is delivered to patient anywhere during emergency treatment care, and medical information is transferred from one site of patient to another site of specialist doctors by using mobile internet communication. Some rural areas have slow internet speed because of weak internet signal propagation from mobile towers. A good design of antenna is needed to improve mobile internet speed for big medial data transmission in telemedicine application. Hence, this paper aims to propose economically low-cost design of antenna.

Design/methodology/approach

Telemedicine recommended to design the satellite frequency modulation dish (SAT FMD) antenna ( where in FM radio antenna, dish antenna are combined ) to improve the internet speed at Telemedicine system and Hospitals for purpose of Telemedicine communication and information for emergency treatment.

Findings

In the proposed system, designed SAT FMD satellite-based antenna improved internet speed is achieved at 90.6% accuracy in this research method. Finding latitude and longitude angles to identify the patient location, nearest hospitals location and finding distance, shortest path routing between patient and hospital. Finding elevation, Azimuth, latitude, longitude, skew for alignment dish to focus satellite and mobile cell tower to improve internet speed at telemedicine area and hospitals and reduced transmission delay and nodal delay of big medical data.

Social implications

The social awareness among people can be shared information of accident patient to communicate Hospital and Ambulance driver by internet mobile app tools and help find nearest hospitals to emergency treatment for accident people.

Originality/value

This paper presents SAT FMD antenna model based on satellite dish antenna consisting of FM radio receiver antenna and dish antenna for telemedicine communication.
