Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the route map for employing efficient e‐governance so that at least existing resource and infrastructure are better utilized and deficiencies are tracked for future planning. National health is one of the most important factors in a country's economic growth. India seems to be a victim of the vicious cycle around poor economy and poor health conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

A detailed study was carried out to find out India's healthcare infrastructure and its standing in e‐governance initiatives. After consolidating the fact that effective e‐governance can enhance the quality of healthcare service even within limited resources, authors explored success and failure factors of many e‐governance initiatives in India and abroad. Finally, an e‐governance framework is suggested based on the above factors together with the authors' own experience of implementing e‐governance projects in India and abroad.

Findings

The suggested framework is based on a phased implementation approach. The first phase “Information Dissemination” is more geared towards breaking the “digital divide” across three dimensions: G2Business; G2Citizen; and G2Agent. The most advanced stage is aimed towards joining up healthcare information across the above three dimensions and drawing meaningful analytics out of it. The recommendations also include management of Policies, Scope, Process Reform, Infrastructure, Technology, Finance, Partnership and People for efficient implementation of such e‐governance initiatives.

Research limitations/implications

The paper provides measures for continuous evaluation of systems as one passes through various stages of implementation. However, the framework can be tested on real or simulated environment to prove its worthiness.

Practical implications

This paper can be a potential frame of reference for nation‐wide e‐healthcare projects not only in India but also in other developing countries. The paper also describes challenges that are most likely to be faced during implementation.

Originality/value

Since the paper is practical in nature, the real appeal will be to practitioners who are responsible for implementation of large e‐governance initiatives for improving healthcare services.

Abstract

One aspect of American inadequacy in developing new international markets is the weakness in American personal communication with other cultures. If we cannot communicate effectively with persons from other cultures, we will forever be at a disadvantage in trading with them.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary aim in this paper is to develop and demonstrate a theory of constraints (TOC) model in which constraint resource prevents the throughput of the organization.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors propose an integrated model by combining Laplace criterion and TOC into a single evaluation model in a multiproduct constraint resource environment. A case study is illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness of this model. The outsourcing decision model compares three alternatives: standard cost accounting, standard theory‐of‐constraints, and our own solution.

Findings

The numerical results show that the new approach is superior to Standard cost accounting and Theory of Constraints and presents a more realistic state of optimum allocation of resources and measures the performance of the model.

Research limitations/implications

This research is limited to the production processes that do not have multiple constraints.

Originality/value

This is the first time that the integrated model comprising of Laplace‐TOC model has been used to maximize the product throughput. Instead of calculating $return per constraint minute, this method decides the priority of product that maximizes the product throughput in the constraint resource environment. It makes a significant contribution to the manufacturing Organization where one can compare the financial performance of the Organization by selecting the right decision model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop and demonstrate an outsourcing model in which constraint resource prevents the throughput of the organization.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper proposes an integrated model by combining the Hurwicz criterion, the theory‐of‐constraints (TOC) and linear programming (LP) into a single evaluation model in a multi‐product constraint resource environment. A case study is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this model. The decision model compares four alternatives: standard cost accounting, standard TOC, LP analysis, and our own solution, which is an approach that combines TOC, LP, and the Hurwicz criterion.

Findings

The numerical results show that this model is superior and more realistically optimizes resource allocation and measures the performance of the model.

Research limitations/implications

This research is limited to the production processes that do not have multiple constraints.

Originality/value

This is the first time that the integrated model comprising of Hurwicz‐TOC‐LP model has been used to maximize the product throughput. Instead of calculating $ return per constraint minute, this method decides the priority of product and resource center that maximizes the product throughput in the constraint resource environment. It makes a significant contribution to the manufacturing organization where one can compare the financial performance of the organization by selecting the right decision model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a model of small retailers’ new product acceptance criteria using a grounded theory approach in an emerging market, India.

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical research on retailers’ new product acceptance either takes survey design or modeling approach. This study uses grounded theory approach to systematically collect and analyze data to generate a model for the small retailers’ new product acceptance in an emerging market, India. In depth interviews with ten small retailers, five situated in small market town and five in a metro were conducted.

Findings

Retail margin on offer is the first and foremost criteria considered while accepting a new product along with product and market-related factors. The small retailers spelt out the tradeoff decision on retail margins while accepting a new product. The tradeoff criteria that emerged during the analysis are trade and promotional support, sales potential of the product, salesperson relationship with the retailer, aspects of fairness in the relationship, corporate reputation, relevant product information, and availability of the product with other retail competitors.

Practical implications

The study suggests that marketers have to maintain healthy relationship with the channel partners especially the retailers who are in direct contact with the final consumer. The findings of the study suggest that marketers specifically need to take into consideration aspects of fairness and encourage salespersons to build and foster relationships with small retailers.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few study which uses grounded theory approach to propose a retailer’s new product acceptance model.
