Abstract

SIR, The occasion of the Corrosion and Metal Finishing Exhibition appears to have aroused fresh interest in the remarkable iron column at Delhi that is still, after nearly 1,700 years, in an excellent state of preservation. The Observer published a good photograph of it when alluding to the exhibition, and Sir Alexander Fleck in his speech when opening the exhibition made some interesting references to it as reported in your issue for December. Its preservation has puzzled many mineralogists and Sir Alexander did not offer an explanation, although he mentioned that he was not impressed by the suggestion that the so‐called mild climate of Delhi is an important factor in its preservation, and he referred to Desch's statement that there is a coating or fine adherent layer of slag, and to the suggestion that these metals may have been forged on stone anvils.

Abstract

WHERE are we going? The aim is to double our standard of living in the next 25 years and, as Sir Alexander Fleck, K.B.E., Chairman of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd., so aptly staled recently, ‘The man who knows where he is going is the one who is most likely to arrive.’ One might venture to expand this statement by adding that he is still more likely to arrive if the cluttering debris of inefficient methods and movements are cleared away.

Abstract

I TAKE it as a great compliment to be asked to open this Exhibition, the Corrosion and Metal Finishing Exhibition. Additionally, I regard the occasion as one on which the President of the Society of Chemical Industry, who happens at this time to be myself, can very usefully and indeed very appropriately take a great interest.

Abstract

C.S.F.R.O. Annual Conference. R. SALTER BACHE, president of the Coil Spring Federation Research Organisation, recently announced at the Federation's annual conference at Hythe that new laboratories for the C.S.F.R.O. at Sheffield, which were ready in July, will be among the most comprehensive of their kind in the world. He said that they will enable research to be carried out on springs made from the finest wires to bars of up to 2 in. diam. In addition to work on springs and torsion bars, research will be possible on materials in wire and strip form. Metallurgical research will also be undertaken on a very wide range of ferrous and non‐ferrous alloys.

Abstract

Analyses the relationship between concepts of enterprise and hierarchy and what effects both terms mean in the growth and development of companies. The method chosen to examine these issues is that of a case study of a UK trawling company. Attempts to look at the issue of a company management in a lateral way, not so much comparing enterprise and hierarchy to try and prove one or the other is the main reason for company success or failure, but to look at their relationship over a long period of time. Firms need to keep a capacity to be entrepreneurial in order to develop properly but they also need rigour to provide stability. However, as this case study proves, it would appear that a solely hierarchical management structure is more likely to be the norm after the founding entrepreneur has vacated power than the mixed needed to ensure ongoing viability.

Abstract

CORROSIVE EMULSIONS AT SEA. Furnace oil fuel burnt in marine boilers is liable to form stable emulsions when contaminated with sea‐water. Such emulsions cause a number of troubles, chief of which are corrosion of tubes and slagging of refractories, making frequent refining of furnaces necessary, due to the salt contained in the sea‐water. The stability of the emulsions varies considerably with the source of the oil fuel, but if conditions of emulsification are sufficiently severe, stable emulsions can be made with practically any furnace fuel oil. British ships which put salt water ballast into fuel tanks are required by law to use an oily water separator when deballasting, but the oil recovered from such a separator can contain as much as 30% by weight sea‐water.

Abstract

ANTI‐CORROSION FOCUS ON OLYMPIA. Plans being made to ensure that London's Olympia is the focus of the anti‐corrosion drive in 1960, including participation by the largest and most representative companies in the ‘ anti‐corrosion ’ industry, will make the Corrosion Exhibition 1960 the biggest and most comprehensive display of its kind. Already two‐thirds of the space in the Empire Hall, Olympia, has been reserved—and the exhibition does not open until November 29.
