2. Elastomers A wide variety of elastomers, generally synthetic, are used in modern valves of the butterfly and diaphragm types with the dual function of lining/protecting internal metal surfaces in contact with the duty and providing the necessary interference for sealing. Without resorting to exotic and expensive metals of construction, even most aggressive services can be successfully handled by variation of elastomer type, while the particular compound is designed to still retain the physical characteristics necessary for optimum sealing. The number of permutations is thus large and indeed one manufacturer offers as many as 18 different resilient liner options. The main elastomer types are summarised:

Abstract

Summary The variety of approaches used to combat corrosion and afford protection of structures and components are outlined. Factors governing selection so often favour combinations of traditional metal and modern polymeric coating or lining. Emphasis is placed on the vital importance of surface preparation and comprehensive specifications. In this context, the role of Specialist Painting Inspectors is outlined and their contribution to quality assurance and improved standards of workmanship is illustrated by reference to bridges, offshore platforms, telescopes and lined components. Future trends are indicated with emphasis on newer methods of surface preparation and protection.

Abstract

Thiourea and nicotinic acid are good inhibitors for the corrosion of brass in nitric acid solutions. Polarisation studies indicate that the anode polarisation with nicotinic acid is less than that on the cathode side. Both the inhibitors increase the cathode and anode polarisation considerably.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION All off‐shore operations are subjected to limited space. These activities, normally carried out in unlimited area when oil/gas is extracted on‐shore, are subject to a small platform area requiring considerable ingenuity for their incorporation. Apart from the well, power‐generating facilities and living accommodation for the crew, space is required on the platform for oil/gas separation, condensate storage, waterflood equipment and transportation equipment.

Abstract

Introduction The post‐war period has seen great changes in the protective treatments applied to structural steel. Whilst corrosion scientists had urged for many years that removal of all rust, scale and surface contaminants before painting was essential to obtain full value from paint treatments, it was generally agreed until recently that to do so was impractical or ruinously expensive. Because the performance of the best available paints was not always adequate on poorly prepared steel, metallization treatments, designed to isolate steel by a complete cover of non‐ferrous metal, were sought, Galvanizing on pickled steel has been practised for many years on light gauge metal. For heavier sections metal‐spraying was developed, but to make this a viable process, mediods for cleaning the steel surface were essential. The grit‐blasting technique perfected for preparation for metal spraying began to be adopted as preparation for painting. However, progress was limited by gross variations in efficiency, and thus in costs, doubts about the type of surface desirable for paint and lack of definition of the bonus in performance to be expected from good preparation.

Abstract

Modern high pressure cross country gas and oil pipelines have two main forms of defence against damage. Constant and vigilant patrolling, generally by air, supplemented by foot and the standard well known corrosion defence of a good coating supplemented by cathodic protection.
