Abstract

Purpose

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) aims at upholding socio-economic condition of deprived communities prevailing in society as well as bringing profitability for corporate companies themselves. This study investigates to what extent the CSR initiatives of financial institutions in Bangladesh have been able to reach out to deprived communities and support various dimensions of financial inclusion (FI) in the country.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, both supply-side and demand-side data are included and discussed rigorously as tools to cross-check the result. Both qualitative and quantitative data are incorporated, and graphs and tables are used to represent the critical information better. A triangulation of in-depth interviews with secondary data is used to ensure rigor and trustworthiness. The triangulation approach works as a method to verify secondary data by interviewees in this study.

Findings

The result shows a positive geographical and demographical penetration of CSR activities, but it does not necessarily bring FI in all cases. This study identifies some key issues that prevail in the current context of Bangladesh, such as usage, distance, quality and cost of financial products.

Originality/value

This study makes use of both supply-side and demand-side information and thus explain the reasons behind the involuntary exclusion of financial services.

This paper attempts to evaluate the impact of intellectual capital on bank performance in Bangladesh.

2124

Abstract

Purpose

This paper attempts to evaluate the impact of intellectual capital on bank performance in Bangladesh.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyze an unbalanced longitudinal data of 32 banks, which cover 318 observations of bank-year from 2010 to 2019. The study employs a dynamic panel model with the two-step system generalized methods of moments (SGMM).

Findings

The results show that bank performance is significantly positively affected by the intellectual capital (IC) in Bangladesh. In addition, the findings show that capital employed efficiency (CEE) is an essential determinant of bank performance rather than structural capital efficiency (SCE) and human capital efficiency (HCE) for the Bangladeshi banking sector.

Originality/value

This work is unique as no one has explored the impact of intellectual capital on Bangladesh's bank performance. The findings suggest that business owners, managers and policymakers who want to improve the efficiency of their organizations should spend continuously on IC and expand their investment into CEE, which includes both financial and physical resources, in order to obtain better bank performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Mucorales has been described to be widely distributed during the most recent COVID-19 pandemic, with a greater frequency of disease in India, particularly among those with immune deficiencies. This study aims to use computational tools to develop a vaccine.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors investigated at Mucorales proteins that had previously been associated to virulence factors. Recent research suggests that a vaccine based on high-level cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL), helper T lymphocyte (HTL) and B-cell lymphocyte (BCL) epitopes from diverse proteins might be developed. Furthermore, the vaccine assembly contains the targeted epitopes as well as PADRE peptides to induce an immune response. Computational approaches were used to analyze the immunological parameters used to build the suggested vaccine and validate its TLR-3 binding.

Findings

These studies show that the vaccination is capable of triggering a particular immune response. The authors offer a technique for developing and evaluating candidate vaccines using computational tools. To the best of their knowledge, this is the first immunoinformatic research of a prospective mucormycosis vaccine.

Originality/value

During this audit, a successful attempt was made to create a subunit MEV against black fungus. In the current study, MEV has been proposed as a suitable neutralizer candidate since it is immunogenic, secure, stable and interacts with human receptors. A stream study, on the other hand, is produced via a mixed vaccinosis approach. Following that, vaccinologists may perform more exploratory testing to evaluate whether the vaccine is effective.

Abstract

Purpose

Organisational slack has been widely considered in strategic management, but there is a gap in understanding the process of accumulation and application of slack resources. From a dynamic perspective and over an extended period of time, this paper analyses the management of slack resources and evaluates whether the different behaviours, in relation to the accumulation and consumption of slack resources, have any effect on performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The resource-based view and the dynamic extension of this theory, i.e. resource management and resource orchestration, were analysed in order to evaluate how slack resources can be managed and generate value. Assuming a configurational approach, the analysis was structured into two stages to answer the proposed hypothesis. The first stage studied whether there were different patterns of management of slack resources over time using the DistatisR package. The second stage evaluated which behaviours had the greatest impact in terms of profitability by using a dynamic panel data regression.

Findings

Three different types of slack resource management were found in companies: efficient, effective and erratic. Different types do not have the same impact on performance.

Originality/value

The dynamic management of slack resources has scarcely been considered, even during periods of crisis and economic expansion. This research advances the understanding of how firms transform slack resources into performance from a dynamic perspective.
