Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply GM (1, 1) and TFGM (1, 1) models on the healthcare sector, which is a new area, and to show TFGM (1, 1) forecasting accuracy on this sector.

Design/methodology/approach

GM (1, 1) and TFGM (1, 1) models are presented. A hospital’s nine months (monthly) demand data is used for forecasting. Models are applied to the data, and the results are evaluated with MAPE, MSE and MAD metrics. The results for GM (1, 1) and TFGM (1, 1) are compared to show the accuracy of forecasting models. The grey models are also compared with Holt–Winters method, which is a traditional forecasting approach and performs well.

Findings

The results of this study indicate that TFGM (1, 1) has better forecasting performance than GM (1, 1) and Holt–Winters. GM (1, 1) has 8.01 per cent and TFGM (1, 1) 7.64 per cent MAPE, which means excellent forecasting power. So, TFGM (1, 1) is also an applicable forecasting method for the healthcare sector.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies may focus on developed grey models for health sector demand. To perform better results, parameter optimisation may be integrated to GM (1, 1) and TFGM (1, 1). The demand may be predicted not only for the total demand on hospital, but also for the demand of hospital departments.

Originality/value

This study contributes to relevant literature by proposing fuzzy grey forecasting, which is used to predict the health demand. Therefore, the new application area as the health sector is handled with the grey model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new integrated method for evaluating inventory of slow-moving items by introducing the application of fuzzy AHP method with interval Type-2 fuzzy sets (IT2FSs) and ABC analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

In the study, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method with IT2FSs is employed to set the importance of criteria. The weights obtained from IT2 fuzzy AHP are used to classify slow-moving items in ABC analysis. In the application part, a real-life case study is presented.

Findings

The result of this study indicates that an integrated approach utilizing IT2 fuzzy AHP and ABC analysis can be used as a supportive tool for classification of slow-moving items. The problem is solved under fuzzy environment to handle uncertainties and lack of information about slow-moving items.

Practical implications

Actual data are provided from an automotive company for prioritizing a various criteria to evaluate and classify stocks and a hypothetical model integrated with IT2 fuzzy AHP and ABC analysis is demonstrated.

Originality/value

Apart from inventory classification literature, the study integrates fuzzy AHP method by employing interval IT2FSs and ABC analysis to solve the real-life inventory classification problem.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a systematic and comprehensive project selection model utilizing fuzzy multi-objective linear programming (FMOLP) that deals with the imprecise data in IS projects and uncertain judgment of decision makers.

Design/methodology/approach

First, projects are prioritized by considering both quantitative and qualitative factors. A fuzzy analytical hierarchical process (FAHP) is used in order to obtain weights of each project that indicates their priorities. At the second step, project selection decision is completed by using FMOLP. Then, the sensitivity analysis is performed to evaluate the robustness of the proposed integrated model.

Findings

The result of this study indicates that an integrated approach utilizing FAHP and FMOLP can be used as a supportive tool for project selection in IS context. It decreases the uncertainty caused from uncertain judgment of decision makers.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies are suggested to design models having fuzzy constraints such as budget and resources. Moreover, for future studies, non-linear membership functions can be used.

Practical implications

Actual projects are provided from the Turkish IS company for prioritizing process and a hypothetical mathematical model is demonstrated using illustrative data.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the relevant literature by proposing a comprehensive model considering many conflicting ideas of decision makers on quantitative and qualitative criteria, and evaluating projects in an integrated way including FAHP and FMOLP.

Abstract

Competitive international business environment has forced many firms to focus on supply chain management to cope with highly increasing competition. Hence, supplier selection process has gained importance recently, since most of the firms have been spending considerable amount of their revenues on purchasing. The supplier selection problem involves conflicting multiple criteria that are tangible and intangible. Hence, the purpose of this study is to propose an integrated model for supplier selection. In order to achieve this purpose, supplier selection problem has been structured as an integrated lexicographic goal programming (LGP) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model including both quantitative and qualitative conflicting factors. The application process has been accomplished in a food company established in Istanbul, Turkey. In this study, the model building, solution and application processes of the proposed integrated model for supplier selection have been presented.
