Abstract
Purpose
The health, well-being and productivity (i.e. WELL) of office building occupants are vulnerable to poor office environments. Therefore, this study aims to identify new features and concepts of office buildings in supporting occupants’ WELL. To achieve that aim, this study: explores new WELL features for office buildings, develops new WELL concepts for office buildings and examines the influence of the newly developed WELL concepts on existing WELL building standard (WELL v2) concepts.
Design/methodology/approach
The first phase involved ten experts to assign weightage for health, well-being and productivity. In the second phase, 206 questionnaire survey data were collected from office building occupants throughout Malaysia. Exploratory factor analysis established new WELL concepts for office buildings. Partial least-squares structural equation modelling examined the influence of the newly developed WELL concepts on the existing WELL v2 concepts.
Findings
Two new WELL concepts were developed: “space and services”, consisting of sufficient space, workstation privacy, office layouts, building automation systems, cleanliness and information technology (IT) infrastructure, and “building security”, consisting of security systems and safety at parking lots. Here, “space and services” influences all existing WELL v2 concepts, and “building security” influences the water, nourishment, mind and community concepts of WELL v2.
Originality/value
This study uncovers holistic WELL building concepts to support occupants’ health, well-being and productivity with additional new features and concepts for construction industry policymakers to establish holistic building assessment tools.

Purpose
This study quantitatively investigates the impacts of digital and learning orientations on supply chain resilience (SCR) and firm performance (FP), aiming to fill the gaps in understanding their specific impacts in the context of Industry 4.0 developments and supply chain disruptions.
Design/methodology/approach
This study utilized survey techniques and structural equation modelling (SEM) to gather and analyse data through a questionnaire based on a seven-point Likert scale. Hypotheses were formulated based on an extensive literature review and tested using Amos software.
Findings
The study confirms SCR’s significant impact on FP, aligning with existing research on resilience’s role in organizational competitiveness. This study uncovers the nuanced impacts of digital and learning orientations on SCR and FP. Internal digital orientation (DOI) positively impacts SCR, while external digital orientation (DOE) does not. Specific dimensions of learning orientation – shared vision (LOS), open-mindedness (LOO) and intraorganizational knowledge sharing (LOI) – enhance SCR, while commitment to learning (LOC) does not. SCR mediates the relationship between DOI and FP but not between DOE and FP.
Research limitations/implications
This research focuses on digital and learning orientations, recommending that future studies investigate other strategic orientations and examine the specific contributions of various digital technologies to SCR across diverse contexts.
Practical implications
The empirical findings emphasize the significance of developing internal digital capabilities and specific learning orientations to enhance SCR and FP, aligning these initiatives with resilience strategies.
Originality/value
This study advances knowledge by distinguishing the impacts of internal and external digital orientations and specific learning dimensions on SCR and FP, offering nuanced insights and empirical validation.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper studies the critical factors from the perspectives of technological quality, personal compatibility and organisational commitment using the technological adoption framework (TAF). The proposed TAF studies the critical factors that influence the intention to use building information modelling (BIM) taking into consideration of the “Perceived Ease of Use (PEU)” and “Perceive Usefulness (PU).”
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed study is a quantitative research study using the TAF model and the statistical analysis using “Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM).” The questionnaires are developed based on the literature review study and disseminated to the stakeholders in the Malaysian construction industry, including consultants, contractors, and clients. The data collected are analysed using PLS-SEM to identify the correlation between the critical factors influencing BIM adoption and the moderation influence of the PEU and PU towards the “Intention to Use (IU)” BIM.
Findings
The data collected from 185 construction industry stakeholders in Malaysia was utilised to develop the structural equation model. The measurement model was analysed in terms of composite reliability, discriminant validity, and collinearity issues. Subsequently, the SEM is analysed, and the findings on the hypothesis on the correlation between the critical factors and the intention to use BIM are examined. The study also examines the mediation effects of the PEU and PU towards the BIM adoption in the Malaysian construction industry.
Originality/value
This research conceptual framework, TAF, is derived from the integration of the existing underpinning theories of the technological adoption model and the technology–organisation–environment framework. This new TAF can be used for the study of new technology adoption. This cross-sectional research study is in line with the “Construction 4.0 Strategic Plan” in Malaysia to establish the current BIM adoption scenario and formulate the framework to promote incentives to promote BIM adoption.

Abstract
Purpose
Firms use design capability across the globe to compete and increase sales, e.g. Apple. However, the payoff from design know-how has been overlooked thus far. Academic research lags in this space despite the intersection of sales, technology and design in practice. This paper provides researchers and managers with implications of the interplay between design capability and technological market conditions to enhance a firm's sales.
Design/methodology/approach
Firms' capability design, and sales impact have been studied in this paper across different technological market conditions. Primary technological conditions of the industry under which firms operate are captured, which are technological intensity (TI), technological competitive intensity (TCI) and technological maturity (TM). Their interplay has been studied using panel data analysis, examining fixed and random effects.
Findings
Design is an important, interesting and non-imitable capacity that yields positive firm execution results. It provides an urgent differentiator and improves deal development. This study found that all four hypotheses are generally supported. The main finding is that, provided underlying technology is good, design significantly improves sales, but design alone cannot substitute for poor technology.
Practical implications
The results of this study link the three technological environment conditions, namely, TI, TCI and TM with sales growth. The authors find that design can and does add to superior performance, provided technological excellence exists prior. But, in the absence of good technology, design alone will hinder performance.
Originality/value
This paper examines the effect of firm design capability on sales growth. The paper finds a positive moderating effect of TCI and TM but a negative moderating effect of TI. The researchers believe these aspects of the design have not been studied before.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the determinants of cash waqf contributions among Malaysian millennials through digital platforms.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study employed the Technology Acceptance Model with 328 respondents from Malaysia. A self-administrative questionnaire was developed and distributed using both online and physical survey methods. Partial least squares analysis was performed on the data using the Smart PLS 4.0 modeling package.
Findings
The results show that attitude, digital literacy, ease of use and waqf knowledge influenced Malaysian millennials to make cash contributions through digital platforms. However, trust in waqf institutions and waqf usefulness factors did not significantly affect Malaysian millennials’ decision to contribute cash waqf.
Research limitations/implications
The research findings have significant theoretical and practical ramifications for applying the Technology Acceptance Model and attracting millennials to contribute cash waqf.
Originality/value
The study adds new value to the literature. The focus of this study, which targets units of analysis among millennials, has received very little attention in the literature related to cash waqf in digital platforms.

Abstract
Purpose
This study investigates the reactions of public sector organisations to the accountability pressures of online dashboards and the impact of this reactivity on reporting systems. This study explores the concept of “reactivity,” which explains changes in organisational behaviours in reaction to being evaluated, observed or measured.
Design/methodology/approach
This study adopts a case study methodology to investigate organisations’ reactivity to an online dashboard within the Italian system of state museums. Data were gathered through a real-time dashboard initiated in 2019, complemented by interviews, participant observations and secondary sources collected over a period of three years.
Findings
The results indicate that online dashboards provoke a divergent but coexistent response: competitive reactivity when museums modify their behaviours to improve performance disclosed in the online dashboard, and polyphonic reactivity when museums question the algorithm’s validity and accuracy on the basis of the online dashboard. This finding reveals the emergence of layered accountability, with organisations balancing public expectations and hierarchical standards through manipulation and boycott, thereby giving rise to a decoupled system of measures.
Originality/value
This research contributes to the literature on public sector accountability by highlighting the dual nature of reactivity, both conforming to and resisting the imposed metrics. This study enhances our understanding of the interplay between digital accountability mechanisms and organisational responses, offering insights into the complexities of adapting to real-time, data-driven environments in the public sector.

Abstract
Purpose
This study empirically assessed the determinants of halal tourism to Japan while focusing on Muslim-friendly facilities and Japanese cultural sites.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses data from 2013 to 2018 and the Spatial Econometrics–Random Effect estimation technique, which allows for controlling for regional dependency. Furthermore, it extends the traditional Gunn and Tripartite Model which describes tourism attractiveness by considering the influence of historical sites on inbound tourism alongside regional gross domestic product (RGDP) and infrastructural availability.
Findings
The findings of the study reveal the existence of spatial autocorrelation among the prefectures in Japan in attracting tourists. The empirical results show that the availability of Mosques or prayer rooms positively influences Muslim tourists inflow in Japan. However, we find no significant impact of halal restaurants on tourism demand. Furthermore, our findings confirm the effectiveness of the components of the Tripartite and Urban Tourism Attractiveness models. Specifically, we find that historical sites and regional GDP significantly influence Muslim tourists visit to Japan.
Originality/value
Our study makes novel contributions to the literature on halal tourism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to apply the spatial econometric technique to study the determinants of tourism demand. The application of spatial econometrics allows us to provide evidence of regional dependence in formulating policies that affect tourism. Secondly, we offer a unique augmentation of Gunn’s tripartite model by including the effect of Muslim-friendly facilities as determinants of tourism demand. Lastly, this is the first study to offer insight on halal tourism in Japan by studying all the Japanese prefectures at the macro-level. Previous studies only consider small samples of tourists in specific prefectures, raising concerns about their external validity.

Abstract
Purpose
This study proposes the integrated Qardhul Hasan and equity-based microenterprise development (IQEMD) model, a financial model for microenterprises in Muslim nation such as Afghanistan. This study aims to overcome the significant challenges these businesses face in securing financial resources, offering a tailored, sustainable solution to enhance their operations.
Design/methodology/approach
This study collected primary data via a survey from 466 microentrepreneurs in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Data analysis was performed using partial least squares with SmartPLS 4 software. The study’s validation of the proposed financial model among microenterprises was grounded in the theory of reasoned action, ensuring a solid theoretical basis for its findings.
Findings
The findings of this research revealed that the attitudes and subjective norms of Afghan microentrepreneurs positively influence their intention to use IQEMD Model. These findings provide important guidance for financing ventures and policymakers, highlighting the IQEMD model’s potential to improve financial strategies and practices for microenterprises in Afghanistan.
Research limitations/implications
This study focuses solely on microenterprise development in Afghanistan, with its sample size and study area being clear constraints. Therefore, caution is advised when interpreting the results, which may not be broadly applicable. The reliance on current factors may also restrict the exploration of other important determinants affecting microenterprises’ behavioral intentions toward using the IQEMD model. Future research should consider incorporating new factors to optimize the IQEMD model and include interviews with more stakeholders to increase its validity.
Practical implications
The findings of this paper offer microenterprises an alternative source of financing to start or expand their businesses. This study holds implications for government and policymakers. By incorporating a nonprofit organization as suggested in this model, it assists the government in reducing expenditures associated with the development of microenterprises.
Originality/value
This study is a pioneering effort in merging Qardhul Hasan and equity-based financing for microenterprise development. It significantly contributes to existing research by underscoring the effectiveness and impact of such financing as a viable source for these enterprises. These strategies could notably boost productivity, employment and gross domestic product growth. The study enhances understanding of alternative financing models in the microenterprise sector.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the understudied topic of Islamic entrepreneurship by adapting the framework of waqf-based entrepreneurship to identify the crucial factors driving waqf-based entrepreneurs’ motivation.
Design/methodology/approach
A partial least squares structural equation model was used to validate the hypotheses, and in-depth interviews were conducted to gain deeper insights into the findings.
Findings
The key findings revealed that self-commitment, entrepreneurial skills and family support exert a significant and positive influence on waqfpreneurs’ motivation to engage in waqf-based entrepreneurship, with self-commitment playing a mediating role between self-actualisation and waqfpreneurial motivation. Additionally, the study proposes categorisations of waqfpreneurs based on the volume of waqf funds managed; their capacity to execute waqf-based entrepreneurship; and institutional performance metrics.
Research limitations/implications
The limited sample size restricts the generalisability of the study. Future research should use a larger sample to generate more broadly applicable results. In addition, the methodology can be replicated in other countries to identify new factors influencing waqfpreneurs’ motivation or to uncover aspects not explored in this research. Future studies could also use qualitative methodologies such as grounded theory, ethnography or case studies. This would allow for a deeper exploration of motivational factors not yet captured, directly from the lived experiences of waqfpreneurs/nazhirs.
Practical implications
The study provides evidence of the key factors that influence waqf-based entrepreneurship, contributing to the literature on entrepreneurship and waqf. It also offers valuable insights for the government and other stakeholders into strategies to motivate waqf-based entrepreneurs, ultimately fostering the development of waqf assets, value creation and sustainable waqf benefit distribution.
Originality/value
The study aims to address the lack of research on Islamic entrepreneurship by specifically modifying the framework of waqf-based entrepreneurship to investigate the key factors that influence individuals’ motivation to conduct waqf-based entrepreneurship and management activities.

Abstract
Purpose
Over the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have rapidly advanced organizational management, with many organizations adopting AI-based algorithms to enhance employee management efficiency. However, there remains a lack of sufficient empirical research on the specific impacts of these algorithmic management practices on employee behavior, particularly the potential negative effects. To address this gap, this study constructs a model based on the psychological ownership theory, aiming to investigate how algorithmic management affects employees’ knowledge hiding.
Design/methodology/approach
This study validates the model through a situational experiment and a multi-wave field study involving full-time employees in organizations implementing algorithmic management. Various analytical methods, including analysis of variance, regression analysis and path analysis, were used to systematically test the hypotheses.
Findings
The study reveals that algorithmic management exerts a positive indirect influence on knowledge hiding through the psychological ownership of personal knowledge. This effect is particularly pronounced when employees have lower organizational identification, highlighting the critical role of organizational culture in the effectiveness of technological applications.
Originality/value
This study is among the first empirical investigations to explore the relationship between algorithmic management and employee knowledge hiding from an individual perception perspective. By applying psychological ownership theory, it not only addresses the current theoretical gap regarding the negative effects of algorithmic management but also provides new theoretical and empirical support for the governance and prevention of knowledge hiding within organizations in the context of AI algorithm application. The study highlights the importance of considering employee psychology (i.e. psychological ownership of personal knowledge) and organizational culture (i.e. organizational identification) under algorithmic management. This understanding aids organizations in better managing knowledge risks while maximizing technological advantages and effectively designing organizational change strategies.
