Abstract
Purpose
Unhealthy diets are associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases and present a significant public health challenge. When developing effective interventions and policies, consideration must be given to the unique social culture in which food choice is embedded. Health vulnerabilities to poor nutrition exist throughout life but may be influenced by socio-cultural factors such as age. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of older or younger Chinese consumers towards healthy eating and explore the factors influencing their food choices.
Design/methodology/approach
Semi-structured interviews were conducted in Wuhan, China, with 20 consumers aged 18–25 (Group A) and 20 consumers aged 65 and over (Group B).
Findings
Thematic analysis revealed that the two groups had positive attitudes towards healthy eating, although Group A participants were more knowledgeable. Time pressure, food prices and social networks differentially influence healthy eating practices across age groups.
Originality/value
Given China’s economic and cultural context, healthy eating interventions should consider the individual characteristics and food preferences of the different age groups. This approach can optimize targeted healthy eating interventions, and media communications related to healthy eating.

Metaverse is one of the technologies that has the most promise for the future. However, there is less discussion about teaching using the metaverse. It is possible that most of the educators are ignorant of the metaverse’s features and its potential uses. The objective of this chapter is to define the metaverse precisely and discusses the various applications, characteristics, and challenges of metaverse in Education. This chapter explores the pioneering efforts in leveraging the metaverse for educational purposes, highlighting key examples and their impact on the learning experience. The possible applications of metaverse and research encounters in context to education are further reviewed and then explained and included the Artificial Intelligence (AI) functions in the world of metaverse along with learning based on metaverse. Researchers in the domains of educational technology and computer science shall advance an inclusive insight of the metaverse and its potential applications in education using various metaverse techniques like gamified learning, virtual learning, etc. Also, the metaverse role in education starting from the perception of AI has been covered.

Abstract
Purpose
Corporations are confronted with growing demands to take a stand on socio-political issues, i.e. corporate social advocacy (CSA), which affects their reputation in the public. Companies use different CSA message strategies, including calling the public to support and act on the issue they advocate. Using reactance theory, the authors investigate the impact of CSA messages with a call to action on corporate reputation in the case of a company's gender equality initiative.
Design/methodology/approach
A one-factorial (CSA message with or without a call to action) between-subjects experiment was conducted by surveying 172 individuals living in Switzerland. The CSA messages were created in the context of gender equality.
Findings
The authors' study indicates that CSA messages with a call to action compared to those without overall harmed corporate reputation due to individuals' reactance, which is higher for CSA messages with a call to action, negatively affecting corporate reputation. The impact of the CSA message strategy with a call to action on corporate reputation remains significant after controlling for issue alignment and political leaning.
Originality/value
Communicating about socio-political issues, especially taking a stand, is a significant challenge for corporations in an increasingly polarized society and has often led to backlash, boycotts and damage to corporate reputation. This study shows that the possible adverse effects of advocating for socio-political issues can be related to reactance. It emphasizes that companies advocating for contested issues must be more cautious about the message strategy than the issue itself.

Abstract
Purpose
Previous investigations into the connection between strategic orientation (SO) and firm performance (FP) have generated inconsistent outcomes. The authors aim to reconcile and explain these varying results through the application of a mediated moderation model. The purpose of this paper is to explore how SO and strategic flexibility (SF) could create the possibility of improving FP. The indirect effect of SO was also tested in this study. Furthermore, by using the moderated mediation model, the authors also investigated the moderating role of strategic human resource management (SHRM).
Design/methodology/approach
This study adopted the empirical research method, collecting data through questionnaires by a two-wave and multi-source data collection approach. The sample consisted of 188 firms from Shandong and Fujian Province in China. SPSS was used to test the research hypotheses.
Findings
This study examines how and when SO enhances FP by considering SF as a critical mediator and SHRM as an important contingency of the mediation effect. The results revealed that SO positively affects SF and FP in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Furthermore, the mediating role of SF between the relationships of SO and FP was also confirmed. Moreover, SHRM strengthens the connection between SO, SR and FP.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the SO literature by revealing how firms translate their SO-based strategies into positive FP through SF and when this indirect effect is most effective.

Abstract
Purpose
To enhance the load capacity and dynamic characteristics of gas foil conical bearings (GFCBs), two kinds of microgrooves (sector and Fibonacci-like shape) are arranged on the top foil surface.
Design/methodology/approach
The Reynolds equation considering gas rarefaction effect is solved by the finite difference method, in which the 2D plate element stiffness model is used for the grooved top foil. The influence of groove on the static characteristics is studied, and the dynamic characteristics of novel bearing are obtained by the perturbation method.
Findings
The results show that the gas rarefaction effect on the load capacities is negligible, and the novel GFCB with microgrooved top foil has higher load capacities. Moreover, the deeper groove is conductive to the dynamic stability improvement. The positive Fibonacci-like groove seems to be the most suitable shape, which can largely increase the axial load capacity with little additional torque cost. And the improvement of dynamic characteristics for the Fibonacci-like grooved GFCB is also more favorable.
Originality/value
As the low cost of groove processing, it is an effective way to improve GFCB’s performance and even can be used to upgrade the bearings in service.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the role of local/provincial government in influencing corporate social and environmental reporting (CSER) in China, and more specifically, how the underlying economic and political factors associated with local government have influenced the quality of CSER.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors used 234 environmentally sensitive companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges during 2013 and 2015 as the research sample to test the relationship between CSER and local government’s political connection and economic prioritisation and the potential mediating effect of local economic prioritisation.
Findings
The analysis provides evidence that local/provincial government’s political geographical connectedness with the central government has directly and positively influenced the level of CSER, while local prioritisation of economic development has a direct but negative effect on CSER in China. In addition, local/provincial prioritisation of economic development has mediated the relationship between local–central political geographical connectedness and CSER.
Practical implications
While local/provincial governments are heavily influenced by the coercive pressure from the central government, they also act in their own political and economic interests in overseeing CSER at the local level. This study raises the question about the effectiveness of the top-down approach to improving CSER in China and suggests that the central government may need to focus more on coordinating and harmonising different local/provincial governments’ interests to enable achieving a common sustainability goal.
Originality/value
The authors provide evidence revealing how the economic and political contexts of local government have played a significant role in shaping CSER in China. More specifically, this paper addresses a gap in the literature by highlighting the importance of local government oversight power for CSER development and how such oversight is determined by local prioritisation of economic development and political geographical connectedness of local and central governments.

Abstract
Purpose
After half a decade of balance sheet clean-up prompted by the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) asset quality review (AQR), Indian banks are back on track for increased loan growth. Being a financial vehicle for the economy, loan growth cannot be put on hold for a long period of time. But it is also important to understand that loan growth carries an inherent risk of default. A trade-off exists between loan growth, non-performing loans (NPLs) and bank profitability. Our study highlights the importance of understanding this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
For our study, we have taken a sample of India’s private and public sector banks. The dataset consists of the financials of our sample for the period 2006–2021. Two-step differenced generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) estimation has been used to establish the relationship. The mediating role of NPLs in the relationship between loan growth and profitability is examined by the mediation analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM) and the Sobel test. We have used Stata 16.1 for the analysis of our dataset.
Findings
The findings of our study suggest that bank lending is a major contributor to the bank’s earnings. Loan growth after a certain point has a negative impact on profitability, and it also adds to the NPLs of the bank. The study result indicates that moderate loan growth is key to steady and stable growth in the Indian banking industry.
Practical implications
Our study is directed toward understanding the positive and negative manifestations of loan growth. We develop a framework to understand this relationship and then empirically prove it. The study is beneficial for employees and policymakers alike to minimize the negative impact of loan growth.
Originality/value
The issue of the simultaneous impact of loan growth on NPLs and profitability has not been studied in the Indian banking sector. Also, this study adds to the present literature by studying the mediation effect of the NPLs on the loan growth and profitability relationship.

Abstract
Due to increasing socio-ecological concerns, manufacturers are paying ample attention to the strategic decision-making for enhancing customer satisfaction considering Industry 4.0 requirements. Customers' preferences are being considered vital into the decisions related to sustainable supplier selection for building competitive gain. Thus, the objective of this study is to develop a real-case-based empirical approach for evaluating performance of suppliers based on customers' feedback, an area not explored much in literature. The novelty of current study lies in the development of an integrated supplier evaluation and selection model involving three phases: (1) identifying sustainable criteria according to Industry 4.0 requirement through customers' feedback, (2) calculating relative scores of criteria using Z-numbers and (3) determining evaluation weights of suppliers using fuzzy-TOPSIS. The contribution of the study lies in effective validation of the model by considering the case of a manufacturing firm, which aids the firm in evaluating performance of suppliers based on customers' socio-ecological expectations while considering reliable information provided by decision-makers (DMs).

Abstract
Purpose
This study analyzes the performance implications of adopting blockchain to support supply chain business processes. The technology holds as many promises as implementation challenges, so interest in its impact on operational performance has grown steadily over the last few years.
Design/methodology/approach
Drawing on transaction cost economics and the contingency theory, we built a set of hypotheses. These were tested through a long-term event study and an ordinary least squares regression involving 130 adopters listed in North America.
Findings
Compared with the control sample, adopters displayed significant abnormal performance in terms of labor productivity, operating cycle and profitability, whereas sales appeared unaffected. Firms in regulated settings and closer to the end customer showed more positive effects. Neither industry-level competition nor the early involvement of a project partner emerged as relevant contextual factors.
Originality/value
This research presents the first extensive analysis of operational performance based on objective measures. In contrast to previous studies and theoretical predictions, the results indicate that blockchain adoption is not associated with sales improvement. This can be explained considering that secure data storage and sharing do not guarantee the factual credibility of recorded data, which needs to be proved to customers in alternative ways. Conversely, improvements in other operational performance dimensions confirm that blockchain can support inter-organizational transactions more efficiently. The results are relevant in times when, following hype, there are signs of disengagement with the technology.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyse what factors influence ethnic minority group (EMG) college students’ attitudes towards promoting online start-ups and how their different attitudes impact their final online start-up behaviours on the live streaming platform. Based on the COM-B behaviour changing model and the theory of liberal and conservative attitudes, the research model has been established in this study, and it divides influencing factors into the environmental opportunity unit and personal capability unit.
Design/methodology/approach
To test relationships among the environmental opportunity, personal capability and personal attitude units, the partial least squares path modelling and variance-based structural equation modelling have been applied on the SmartPLS. Meanwhile, this study considers the regional difference between China’s developed and less-developed regions and promotes multi-group analysis based on it.
Findings
Research results show that the online start-up opportunity and capability positively affect EMG college students’ liberal attitudes but reduce EMGs’ conservative attitudes. Meanwhile, this study finds four significant differences, such as the path between conservative attitude and EMG students’ online start-up behaviour and the path between online start-up capability and conservative attitude.
Originality/value
This paper analyses the relationship between influencing factors and EMG students’ online start-up attitudes based on the COM-B behaviour changing model, contributing to the theoretical implications. Meanwhile, considering the impact of regional differences, this paper promotes the multi-group analysis and compares EMG college students from developed regions and others from less-developed areas.
