Abstract
What is the purpose of hazing? Why does it continue to happen? How can we enact change? Despite a wealth of research on hazing – documenting the detrimental effects, analysing prevalence, trends and causes, as well as suggesting steps to prevent hazing – there remains a disconnect between anti-hazing research, messages and online resources and the delivery and implementation of anti-hazing information and work in communities. Ignited by waves of sport activism and social justice movements globally, not only is greater attention being paid to long-established cultures of violence and abuse in sport and society, but victims are finding their voice and collective strength to expose perpetrators of violence and hold them accountable. Indeed, we are witnessing positive cultural shifts that challenge many of the ideological norms and values traditionally used to rationalise hazing behaviours. Deep change of this magnitude requires serious investment in thoughtfully developing strategies to: optimise educational efforts, expose infractions, enforce rules, hold policymakers, team leaders and athletics personnel accountable, open lines of communication for reporting and addressing instances of hazing as well as listening to athletes' voices in promoting positive team building experiences. Successfully making these investments is key for making progress towards protecting athletes from cultures of violence and harm.

Abstract
Amidst all of the prestige and tradition of college athletics, there exists an ugly underside of hazing. Hazing, generally defined as any forced act that may result in harm as a condition to become a part of a group, has been a part of colleges and universities, including college athletics, for decades. This qualitative study explores the ways in which peer leaders and team captains can impact their athletic team environment, especially within the context of hazing. Participants were swimmers and water polo players at two large west coast universities.
The findings of my study indicated that several factors were influential in understanding an athletic team's relationship to hazing. The dynamic of the team, the role and effectiveness of the team captain and the way in which formal and informal educational efforts are designed all emerged as significant. From these influential factors, several recommendations emerged to address hazing in athletics. Most notably, by harnessing the potential of peer leadership, especially the team captain position, educators can design an approach to significantly reduce hazing from college athletics.

Abstract
Purpose
Assessing performance art has shifted toward an audience-centric approach, with various factors impacting audiences’ holistic experiences in a theater. Existing theater marketing research has predominantly focused on servicescapes, leaving a research gap regarding audiences’ spatial experience within theater buildings.
Design/methodology/approach
To address this gap, this case study collected crowdsourced data from mainstream social media platforms, including rating scores, textual reviews and reviewer-uploaded photos. The aim was to explore to what extent the theater architecture design impacted audiences’ theatrical experience. The old and new facilities of the case study theater were compared, and a series of quantitative and qualitative techniques were applied for data analysis, including statistics, content analysis, sentiment analysis and thematic analysis.
Findings
The study identified five major themes in social media review: the show, architectural design and attributes, staff and service, neighborhood and amenities, and financial consideration. Comments about theater architecture constituted a substantial portion of reviews, with seating comfort, intimacy and stage visibility being frequently discussed features. Seven subthemes related to architectural design emerged as key contributors to audiences’ spatial experiences, including aesthetics, design and spatial configuration; the bar and lobby; the new facility; seats; sets and stage; acoustics; and intimacy and atmosphere.
Originality/value
The study places the individual experiences of audience members as central and uses an inductive approach to analyze their self-generated data. The research results offer valuable insights into theater design and confirm the belief that architectural design has a significant impact on the overall theatrical experience of audiences.

Abstract
This chapter discusses the care experiences of a group of parents and a grandparent working at a Higher Education Institution in England and homeschooling during the pandemic. The group established an informal, work-based, online peer support group during and beyond the first COVID-19 lockdown. This chapter analyses a survey of group members and the group's online chat data to explore experiences of homeschooling and participating in the group. It represents a pioneering case study in how a group of parent-workers coped with the conditions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. We argue that the group was underpinned by an ethic of care, based on reciprocal care relationships. The group developed ways of caring together and sought to influence and create more caring working practices and cultures. Whilst it is possible to create small pockets of more inclusive, supportive and caring spaces within education workplaces, we conclude that the challenge to create supportive family-friendly working environments remains.

Abstract
This study investigates the ubiquitous business model and e-commerce strategy of WeChat as a platform. The potential of WeChat as a tool for sustainable entrepreneurial development has received limited attention from researchers. The purpose of this study is to uncover the hidden issues associated with WeChat's role in e-commerce development. It also examines the opportunities and limitations of using WeChat for e-commerce. The study employs a qualitative research approach, including an extensive literature review and ethnographic study. The results demonstrate that leveraging mobile apps like WeChat can greatly enhance entrepreneurial tendencies and foster sustainable entrepreneurship, thus contributing to poverty eradication in emerging nations.

Abstract
Research methodology
Data for this case was collected through multiple interviews with the founder, staff and customers of Miss Rizos. In total, about 10 h of interviews were recorded and transcribed. To write the case, the authors visited the firm’s premises in Santo Domingo. Furthermore, observations, participation as clients and informal interactions also resulted in additional data and evidence that supported the case. In addition, the authors consulted corporate documents and archival data, as well as secondary sources, such as internet news, blogs, YouTube and other social media.
Case overview/synopsis
In 2011 Carolina Contreras opened a beauty salon (“Miss Rizos”) located in the heart of Santo Domingo, on the same street where slaves were once sold. The “unapologetic” powerful aim of the salon was to empower Afro-descendant, Afro-Latino, Afro-Dominican women, helping them revitalize their image and feel proud of their coils, curls and waves – and ultimately, of their identity. By the end of 2019, Carolina established a second hair salon in New York City. The case dilemma takes place in the summer of 2023. It involves choices the firm faces regarding the enhancement of its “activist” spirit, the adequacy of its organization and, more urgently, regarding its viability and possible growth/“scaling-up”.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to enrich the debate on whether women should continue to be under-represented in the upper echelons of organisations. Evidence arrives from the health-care battlefield and, more specifically, the Greek public hospitals assessed in terms of financial performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The whole set of Greek public hospitals operating in 2022 were included in a quantitative approach, whereby financial ratios reflect financial performance, while the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Chief Financial Officer (CFO) gender reflects the female representation. Descriptive statistics analysis, t-tests and correlation analysis were performed.
Findings
The findings of this study suggest that female CEOs significantly outperformed their male counterparts on liquidity and accounts payable turnover, while female CFOs surpassed males concerning inventory turnover. Contrarily, hospitals with male CFOs achieved higher profitability, but income statements seem self-manipulated thanks to state subsidies and cash accounting techniques. Women appear to focus on those components of financial performance which are better aligned to the social role of public entities, while their contribution to non-financial performance is also underpinned by previous research.
Practical implications
Women’s under-representation in management positions was partially confirmed, as less than 1 / 4 of hospitals appoint a female CEO but circa 7 / 10 of them appoint a female CFO. This could be attributed to stereotypes combined with policy and governance factors. The latter were discussed well in this paper shaping a roadmap towards better gender equality in health-care settings.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this was the first effort to investigate the association between managers’ gender and financial performance in Greek health care.

Purpose
Natural food colors used in food are generally perceived as additives. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to prove the health benefits and risks of using natural food colors, which play an important role in the food industry, and to identify realistic stabilization methods. This paper aims to examine the health effects of natural food colors from a pharmacological approach.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper searches for relevant literature using keywords such as “natural food coloring”, “stabilization” and “antioxidant effects”. For the case study area, this paper added “food science and technology” to identify methods for stabilizing natural food coloring. From this review, the authors ultimately selected 79 articles that appeared to meet the research objectives.
Findings
When using natural food coloring in food, there are concerns about stabilization. However, with the development of food science and technology, the authors have found that there are multi-layer emulsification methods that can be applied before, during and after food manufacturing, and storage standards are also important. Natural food coloring is playing a diverse role in food science.
Originality/value
Natural food coloring has been reported in various types of literature to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. The most common pigments are carotenoids. Considering the positive effects of natural food coloring on human health, the authors suggest future directions for the development of food science and technology and provide a perspective for changing consumer perceptions.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the impact of third-party logistics (3PL) supervisors’ paradoxical leader behavior (PLB) on the relationship between logistics digitalization and 3PL blue-collar employee performance. 3PLs often lag in digitalization due to blue-collar employees struggling with learning paradoxes, i.e. the tension between abandoning the known methods in favor of new ones. In such situations, 3PL supervisors play a crucial role in helping their subordinates manage these tensions. By incorporating a paradox theory lens, we propose that 3PL supervisors’ PLB acts as a supportive tool, motivating blue-collar employees to address learning paradoxes, thereby improving their operational performance.
Design/methodology/approach
We conduct a scenario-based behavioral experiment in which participants assume the role of a package sorter in a fictional 3PL hub setting. Participants engage in a custom-designed package sorting game that mimics a real-life hub sorting operation.
Findings
The results indicate that digitalization combined with supervisors’ PLB significantly improves blue-collar employee performance, with the most substantial improvement observed in the high digitalization and high PLB condition than all other conditions.
Originality/value
Our research examines the impact of digitalization on blue-collar employees’ performance through a paradox theory lens. We demonstrate that 3PLs can maximize digitalization benefits by ensuring supervisors exhibit high PLB. Also, we introduce a package sorting game for researchers to conduct experiments related to digitalization and hub operations.
