Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how expressing gratitude and forgiveness on social media platforms relates to the overall sentiment of users, aiming to understand the impact of these expressions on social media interactions and individual well-being.

Design/methodology/approach

The hypothesis posits that users who frequently express gratitude or forgiveness will exhibit more positive sentiment in all posts during the observed period, compared to those who express these emotions less often. To test the hypothesis, sentiment analysis and statistical inference will be used. Additionally, topic modelling algorithms will be used to identify and assess the correlation between expressing gratitude and forgiveness and various topics.

Findings

This research paper explores the relationship between expressing gratitude and forgiveness in X (formerly known as Twitter) posts and the overall sentiment of user posts. The findings suggest correlations between expressing these emotions and the overall tone of social media content. The findings of this study can inform future research on how expressing gratitude and forgiveness can affect online sentiment and communication.

Originality/value

The authors have demonstrated that social media users who frequently express gratitude or forgiveness over an extended period of time exhibit a more positive sentiment compared to those who express these emotions less. Additionally, the authors observed that BERTopic modelling analysis performs better than latent dirichlet allocation and Top2Vec modelling analyses when analysing short messages from social media. This research, through the application of innovative techniques and the confirmation of previous theoretical findings, paves the way for further studies in the fields of positive psychology and machine learning.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a reflection in memory and tribute to the work and life of Professor Barbara Czarniawska (1948–2024).

Design/methodology/approach

We invited those colleagues whom we knew to be close to Barbara to submit reflections about her contributions to academia alongside their memories of her as a person. We present these reflections in the order we received them, and they have only been edited for minor grammatical and punctuation issues to preserve the voice of the contributing authors.

Findings

The reflections in this paper represent different translations of Barbara’s academic and theoretical contributions. However, she also contributed to people. While we can count the number of papers, books and book chapters she published, we must also count the number of co-authors, Ph.D. supervisions, visiting professorships and conference plenaries she touched. This (ac)counting tells the story of Barbara reaching out to work and interact with people, especially students and early career researchers. She touched their lives, and the publications are an artefact of a human being, not an academic stuck in an ivory tower.

Originality/value

A paper in Barbara Czarniawska’s honour where some of her closest colleagues can leave translations of her work through a narrative reflection, seems to be a fitting tribute.

Abstract

Purpose

The link between sleep disturbance and aggression among forensic psychiatric patients is well established. However, the relationship between subjective experience of sleep quality and sleep hygiene, reported head injury, age, neuropsychological functioning and risk within these populations remains poorly understood. A study is described examining the relationships between these factors in a sample of individuals deemed a “grave and immediate” risk toothers. The aim of this study is to explore these relationships in more detail.

Design/methodology/approach

A service evaluation project examining the prevalence of self-reported sleep dysfunction, age and the relationship with neuropsychological functioning, reported head injury and dynamic risk appraisals of a UK high secure psychiatric patient sample is described (n = 84).

Findings

Self-reported poor sleep quality and poor sleep hygiene is present among 65% of patients, especially those in admission and high dependency wards. Whilst there are no differences between those with a self-reported head injury history in sleep quality, there is in sleep hygiene. Older patients also report more sleep hygiene problems. The combination of poor sleep quality, poor sleep hygiene and performance within selective aspects of executive functioning tasks has some relationship with dynamic risk.

Practical implications

The importance of sleep management and cognitive remediation is discussed, as is the need for more robust research and inclusion of an assessment of sleep within forensic neuropsychological and psychiatric evaluations.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to examine the relationship of sleep disturbance, neuropsychological functioning and head injuries and risk within a high secure psychiatric patient sample.

This compact case study was developed from secondary sources readily available in the public domain. These secondary sources included websites, videos and articles.

Case overview/synopsis

Throughout 2023, social media companies faced a wide range of criticism on several fronts. Critics claimed that the companies were not doing enough to manage content and the algorithms were influencing American public opinion in the Israel-–Hamas war. Others argued that social media was negatively impacting the mental health of American youth. In response, the platforms reiterated their neutrality and emphasized the features, functions and policies that were designed to address the issues and encourage a positive user experience. As generative artificial intelligence (AI) grew in popularity, the impact on social media was inevitable. Was the convergence of social media and AI inspiring progress or exacerbating problems? How would society balance the opposing forces in a rapidly evolving environment?

Complexity academic level

Abstract

Purpose

The paper contends that the migrant workers experience a significant impact on their relations back in the place of origin. In this context, this paper aims to explore, in depth the migration of the labourers to Kashmir and the challenges experienced by them in terms of adaptation to an unfamiliar culture, health and well-being, stereotyping, limited availability of collective religious spaces and the impact of migration on their social relations with the kith and kin way back in the place of origin. This is a qualitative study based on 20 oral narratives with respondents who experienced significant socio-cultural challenges in the host societies. The evidence-based findings reveal that significant challenges are experienced by the migrant workers in Kashmir, with respect to the social and cultural aspects of their lives.

Design/methodology/approach

Keeping in view the nature and the objectives of the study, qualitative research approach was used to have an empathetic understanding of the experience of obstacles by the migrant workers pertaining to cultural adaptation, health and well-being, stereotyping and other hard to adjust problems. The study used a convenience sampling technique to recruit the respondents in the district Pulwama of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with 12 daily wage migrant labourers who after migrating to the valley of Kashmir, experienced challenges with respect to the cultural adaptation, health and well-being, stereotyping and employment opportunities. The data was collected in the month of June and July, keeping in view the massive influx of migrant worker in the valley. While collecting data from the first ten participants, the study encountered data saturation, as the same set of responses were observed. Meanwhile, two more respondents were added to the study to ensure that no data is left out, but again the same set of response was recorded. This prompted the investigator to cease the data collection process. Moreover, the current study was conducted at a time and place convenient to participants, usually at the online e-service shops, where these daily wage migrant labourers come for money transfer and other related activities. Thematic analysis of data was practiced as per the technique of Braun and Clarke (2006), which involves becoming acquainted with the data, looking for themes, validating and refining those themes, identifying and labelling those themes and finally creating the report.

Findings

The evidence-based findings reveal that significant challenges are experienced by the migrant workers in Kashmir, with respect to the social and cultural aspects of their lives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical perspective on how the COVID-19 crisis shaped inclusive leadership behaviors of global business leaders.

Design/methodology/approach

Using quantitative and qualitative methods, the authors analyzed 240 CEO statements in 120 multinational enterprises from six countries (France, India, Japan, South Korea, UK, USA), pre- and mid-COVID-19.

Findings

Results show that CEO emphasis on inclusive leadership increased during the pandemic. More substantively, the authors identify three key behaviors of inclusive leadership – fidelity, calmness and collective resilience.

Originality/value

The authors provide empirical evidence of inclusive leadership behaviors by global business leaders. In doing so, the authors integrate inclusive leadership into societally engaged international business research.

Abstract

Purpose

Hybrid work arrangements became the new norm post-pandemic, introducing challenges to workplace well-being, with implications for burnout and organizational commitment. This study reviews existing research on well-being in the hybrid work context and offers directions for future research and practical implications for managers.

Design/methodology/approach

Using Scientometric analysis and the Theory-Characteristics-Context-Methods (TCCM) framework, this study reviews literature from Scopus and proposes future research directions.

Findings

Hybrid work, remote work and well-being have emerged as core themes, while the prominence of the COVID-19 pandemic as a theme has declined. The job demands-resources model was the most frequently applied theory, with variables such as well-being, work engagement and leadership effectiveness commonly explored. Higher education and Information Technology (IT) sectors were prominent contexts, and methods included grounded theory, surveys and interviews.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies should examine the impact of hybrid work on employee engagement, employee thriving, workplace ostracism and workplace bullying in industries such as IT and healthcare. Theoretical exploration should integrate Organizational Support Theory and Self-Determination Theory.

Practical implications

Managers should support hybrid models with personalized well-being programs, flexible work schedules and mental health initiatives. Financial support for ergonomic home offices and research on Return on Investment (ROI) from hybrid models will be essential.

Social implications

Framing hybrid work and well-being within the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework underscores its social, environmental and financial dimensions. This approach highlights the potential of hybrid work to reduce commuting-related emissions and enhance societal well-being.

Originality/value

The current study, being the first to employ scientometric analysis and the TCCM approach to examine well-being in hybrid work, addresses key gaps in the literature. It provides a comprehensive discussion of relevant theories. Further, it offers novel insights into employee well-being and sustainability, and valuable directions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate how the effectiveness of green advertising can be improved by matching benefit appeals (self vs other) and message sidedness (one-sided vs two-sided) in consumer evaluations of green products.

Design/methodology/approach

Four scenario experiments and one field experiment were conducted to investigate the interaction effects of benefit appeals and message sidedness on green consumption. It aims to verify the psychological mechanisms that promote green consumption when benefit appeals and message sidedness are matched and to explore the persuasiveness of this matching on consumers with different power states engaging in green consumption.

Findings

Studies 1 and 4 provide evidence that when advertising conveys self-benefit appeals (vs other-benefit appeals), two-sided messages (vs one-sided messages) positively promote green consumption. Importantly, Study 2 concluded that perceived manipulative intent was the psychological mechanism underlying the interaction effects of green advertising benefit appeals and message sidedness. Studies 3 and 5 confirm that the power state plays a moderating role in these effects.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the growing research on green marketing, especially green advertising, and advances the theoretical knowledge of how to match benefit appeal with message sidedness to promote green consumption effectively.

Practical implications

This study provides a more comprehensive understanding of consumer evaluations of green products under the influence of benefit appeals and message sidedness. The match between benefit appeal and message sidedness can promote green consumption. These findings can help marketers and policymakers promote green consumption by designing advertisements that match benefit appeal with message sidedness. When considering the power state’s impact, marketers should consider consumers’ high- or low-power states when selecting appropriate advertisement designs. Alternatively, they can manipulate the power state to optimise the effectiveness of advertisements.

Originality/value

Although previous research has focused on the difference in persuasiveness between self-benefit and other appeals, little is known about how to match green benefit appeals and message sidedness to heighten the persuasiveness of green advertising to consumers. Therefore, in this study, this paper attempts to fill this research gap by exploring how green benefit appeals and message sidedness match and how green advertising may produce better persuasion effects on green consumption.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand the situation of hotels and tourism industry in Malaysia during and in post Covid-19 and to mitigate indirect damage caused by COVID-19 to the hotel business and tourism industry by examining the factors that have an influence on hotel’s customer satisfaction rating and revisit intention through an integration of service quality (SERVQUAL) framework and expectation-confirmation theory (ECT).

Design/methodology/approach

The SERVQUAL and ECT were considered the underpinning theoretical models but are integrated and extended by including a few additional variables. Data were collected from 458 respondents of travelers and hotel customers in Malaysia and analysed by applying partial least squares structural equation model technique.

Findings

The empirical results established that significant positive relationships exist between the three newly emerged independent variables (IVs), namely, hygienic practice, greenness of service and digitalization and hotel customer satisfaction towards hotel revisit intention, and only two variables from SERVQUAL, namely, reliability and assurance, have a significant relationship with hotel customer satisfaction towards hotel revisit intention. The results reveal that customer satisfaction has significant direct effect between above-mentioned IVs and customers revisit intention.

Research limitations/implications

The use of purposeful sampling method in only one country might limit the generalizability of the results. Future research should be planned to duplicate the current study using a sizable sample of participants from multiple countries and include other related factors related to the pandemic phenomena such as safety, hotel location and health value offered.

Practical implications

Theoretical findings imply that service quality is a dynamic theory that should be examined continuously to achieve sustainable and resilient performance in today’s competitive business environment, as some modifications inevitably occur over time and new factors could be emerged. Regarding practical implications, study findings proved the great significance of assurance, reliability, digitalization, greenness and hygienic practices on customer satisfaction towards intention to revisit to hotel. Therefore, it is critical for hotel management to retain hotel business industry in a way that fits and matches customer’s health protection, meets customer’s newly prompted expectations and needs and ensures resilience during unsettled times.

Originality/value

This study is unique as the newly emerged variables are included in the research framework, and thus it helps to close the literature gap by introducing an integrated SERVQUAL and ECT theoretical model, which rarely performs in this context and can be replicated or extended with validated scales. This study contributes to enhancing hotel and tourism sustainable service quality performance to achieve myriad economic and health values.
