Abstract

Purpose

Despite an exponential rise in the frequency of online payments in India, the cause of consumer resistance towards the WhatsApp payment system (WPS) remains unexplored. This research is aimed at exploring the barriers to the adoption of WPS.

Design/methodology/approach

A research model was proposed using stimulus-organism-response framework and innovation resistance theory. Data were collected from 392 users of the WhatsApp application using the mall intercept technique, which also utilizes digital payment platforms. A co-variance based structural equation modelling was employed to test proposed relationships in this cross-sectional study.

Findings

The study findings indicate that personal innovativeness as a personal stimulus negatively influences the usage and value barrier, while negative word of mouth (NWOM) increases the intensity of tradition and the image barrier. Additionally, value barrier, usage barrier, risk barrier and tradition barrier were found to have a negative influence on the intention to adopt the WhatsApp payment system.

Originality/value

This research is an initial endeavour that sheds light on the consumer cognition resisting the adoption of the WPS.

Abstract

Purpose

Mobile edge computing (MEC) services have long been used by private enterprises in Saudi Arabia with considerable success; however, there has been a stark lack of insight into how these services can be used to improve mobile government (M-Government) services for KSA citizens. This study aims to bridge this gap by integrating MEC with an enhanced version of the technology acceptance model (TAM) and examining its effects on user behavior and acceptance.

Design/methodology/approach

A closed-ended survey was administered to 1,500 people, and the responses were analyzed using sophisticated advanced statistical techniques to test an expanded TAM, using a quantitative method that uses structural equation modeling to validate the proposed model and hypotheses.

Findings

This study reveals that MEC significantly influences users’ intentions about using M-Government services and their tolerance for new technology adoption. Specifically, service cost and social influence are positively linked with end users’ intention to adopt M-Government services.

Originality/value

The novelty and contribution of this paper to existing literature are in highlighting the pivotal role of MEC in transforming public sector service delivery through technology. This study not only supports the adoption of M-Government services to enhance social welfare but also demonstrates and concludes some practical and theoretical ramifications of MEC service adoption.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to introduce the concept of information snowballing, which shows the process of how individuals with a specific interest in food sustainability acquire information about and remain abreast of sustainability-related information in everyday life and food practices.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed constructivist grounded theory to investigate the information acquisition practices of consumers of sustainable food around topics related to sustainability. The author collected data through pre-screening phone calls, photo diaries and in-depth semi-structured interviews by using theoretical sampling with nine sustainable food consumers; analyzed data through constant comparison and memoing; and validated findings via methodological jotting, data triangulation and peer-debriefing throughout the process.

Findings

The findings identify three stages of information snowballing: (a) learning by lifelong exposure and serendipitous information encountering; (b) constructing information landscapes; and (c) snowballing or gradually accumulating information.

Practical implications

This concept advocates for spreading sustainability-related information and awareness outside the context of formal education.

Originality/value

This study originates the concept of “information snowballing,” which evolves from the idea of snowball sampling, a common strategy for participant recruitment. Both of these terms lean on the idea that a snowball rolling downhill picks up more and more momentum and more and more snow as it travels; recruitment and information gathering show the same process of accretion through building momentum. Information snowballing highlights the individual’s agency in seeking relevant information sources, expressing one’s interests, constructing information landscapes—all activities that precede the serendipitous encountering and snowballing of information based on a particular interest. It also connects everyday information practices to information landscapes within the context of everyday food practices.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to elucidate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, reverse innovation and international performance of emerging economy multinational enterprises (EMNEs).

Design/methodology/approach

The authors analyze archival data of Chinese limited companies between 2010 and 2016, including 11,230 firm-year observations about 1708 firms. In order to test the study’s mediation hypotheses, the authors apply an ordinary least square (OLS) regression.

Findings

The authors find evidence that the entrepreneurial orientation of EMNEs has a positive effect on reverse innovations. Furthermore, the authors find positive effects of reverse innovation on the international performance of EMNEs. This pattern of results suggests that the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and international performance is partially mediated by reverse innovation.

Practical implications

The study’s findings help managers in EMNEs to promote reverse innovation by building and using their entrepreneurial orientation. It also helps them to set out and gauge the chances of success of their internationalization strategies. The findings also hold relevance for firms in developed economies as well, as they may understand which emerging economy competitors stand to threaten their positions.

Originality/value

The strategic role of reverse innovations – i.e. clean slate, super value and technologically advanced products originating from emerging markets – has generated considerable research attention. It is clear that reverse innovations impact the international performance of EMNEs. Yet how entrepreneurial orientation influences international performance is still underexplored. Thus, the current study clarifies the mechanism by examining and testing the mediating role of reverse innovation among the entrepreneurial orientation–international performance link.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper argues that past events of queer resistance – such as the Stonewall Riots in 1969 in New York – need to be critically inquired for their meaningful legacy and future potentiality through remembering and re-experiencing these events affectively. Considering the recent backlash against LGBTQI+ people, the paper underlines the importance of a nuanced understanding and affective remembering of historic events like the Stonewall riots for contemporary queer activism and scholarship.

Design/methodology/approach

The study engages with the analysis of a new opera production commissioned by the New York City Opera at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. The focus of this uprise at and around the Stonewall Inn is seen as an emblematic event synonymous with what was then called “gay” liberation and forms a significant moment of collective troublemaking in queer history. Operas like other cultural performances are considered as forms of queer worldmaking, which can be analyzed as an evolving stream of ambivalent affect and minor feelings.

Findings

The paper offers an affective analysis of the performance of the opera “Stonewall.” First, the analysis provides a sketch of how individual storylines struggling with the ambivalence between daily humiliation and sexual longing assemble into a collective affective complex that layered the intensity of the uprising. Second, the analysis documents how the Stonewall-opera “re-members” the intersectional composition of these ambivalent affects to counter the tendency to mainstream queer history.

Originality/value

The paper’s writing illustrates how the collective organizing of queer resistance can be advanced through exploring such unusual aesthetic realms like queer opera, as it connects troublemaking politics with affective activism, the reviving of affective moments in queer history. It underlines the potential of queer opera and other cultural, popular productions to feel and live the intensity and energy of reimagining and realizing queer worldmaking.

Abstract

Purpose

With the use of a curriculum framework, consumer educators can “work to improve their students' emotional states and examine critically their self-beliefs.” Active learning research has focused on attitudinal reactions rather than cognitive outcomes. It can be processed and implemented for real, dynamic and vibrant learning whereas passive learning is used to acquire ideas and information that is available for recall. This study aims to assess the impact of active and passive learning tools on Environmentally sustainable consumption behaviour [ESCB]. This study will help to grasp the authorities' focus on recommending the types of active and passive learning for the institutions for enhancing Environmentally sustainable consumption behaviour [ESCB] among children.

Design/methodology/approach

The data analysis for this study was conducted using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), a statistical method commonly used to compare the means of multiple groups to determine if there are significant differences among them. The study followed an experimental design, specifically a pre-test–post-test control group design, which is ideal for assessing the impact of an intervention. The study involved a total of 641 school children as participants. These children were distributed across three grade levels: Third Class, Fourth Class and Fifth Class.

Findings

It was found that active learning forms were effective and statistically significant for impacting ESCB as compared to control group results. It was also found that passive learning forms were an effective but statistically non-significant method for impacting ESCB among primary school children.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the findings, the study concluded that while active learning styles have a greater impact on ESCB than passive learning styles, it is still necessary to determine which active or passive learning styles are most effective in influencing ESCB.

Practical implications

This study will assist educators in understanding the kinds of Active and Passive learning environments that can be used to encourage children's environmentally friendly consumption practices.

Originality/value

This paper is entirely novel and has been composed by the author

Abstract

Purpose

An S-curve is an essential project-management tool. However, it is difficult to adjust S-curve to deal with a force majeure event. The present study develops four valuable adjustment approaches, designed to achieve a compromise between the views of the client and contractor. These can be used to control projects after a force majeure event.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study develops four adjustment approaches, which can be used to achieve a compromise between the views of the client and those of the contractor when controlling projects after a force majeure. To determine the S-curves during a force majeure event, two approaches can be selected: BCWS (budgeted cost of scheduled work)-base approach, or BCWP (budgeted cost of work performed)-base approach. To determine the rest of S-curves after a force majeure event, two approaches can be considered: maintaining the original curve of the remaining BCWS, or allocating the original curve of the remaining BCWS. Based on the validation of three empirical cases, drawn from a professional project-management website, this study confirms the feasibility of four proposed empirical approaches and a selection procedure for S-curve adjustment.

Findings

The S-curve-adjustment approaches presented here can be used to deal with cases that are ahead of, on and behind schedule. Using the proposed approaches and selection procedure, contractors can easily revise S-curves and control projects more effectively. To deal with a force majeure event, such as COVID-19, they are strongly advised to adopt the approaches labeled SA-A1 (to adjust the S-curve based on the extension ratio multiplied by the difference in progress during the force majeure) and SA-B1 (to maintain the original curve of the remaining BCWS) for the A/E and E/F curves, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed approaches can be used in cases of continuous construction during force majeure events. If construction work is totally suspended during such an event, it will be necessary to fine-tune the proposed approaches.

Originality/value

Previous studies have used case-oriented or mathematical-simulation approaches to forecast S-curves. The present study proposes simple approaches that allow the client and contractor to adjust the S-curve easily after a force majeure event. These approaches can be used to adjust work and project-completion targets within an extended duration. Selecting the right S-curve adjustment approach can help to control the remainder of the project, reducing the possibility of delay claims.
