Abstract

As the today's world is leading toward the digital dependency and after the world pandemic of COVID-19, the dependency of students and the university is completely through a digital medium, in context with that the higher education according to the demand of the generation is leading towards digital transformation. The digital transformation in the sector of education is the road map for the sustainable management and development of education. The digital transformation is the new pillar of education in which the students are mostly reliable. The digitalization in the field of education will lead to simple and clarified as well as multiple way for acquiring the knowledge. As the integration of the new model of education system is applied and implemented throughout the globe, the digital medium plays a significant role for the smooth and the systemic development of the model. In this chapter, the pathway for the development of the well-stable and well-developed strategies is considered in which the integration of the essential requirements, proper guidance, and advantages of the model is dependent for the transformation to digital medium of the higher education that will be leading to the development of the management and the education system. The foundation of that transformation model is detailed in the paper for the digitalization of higher education.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of different repair patch materials in reducing the stresses at the crack tip of a 2024-T3 aluminum plate. This involves a numerical analysis using the finite element method (FEM) to estimate the reduction in the J-integral value, with the goal of identifying how various parameters related to the patch materials, adhesive properties and loading conditions influence the structural integrity of the repaired plate.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology of this research involves conducting a numerical analysis using the FEM to estimate the reduction in the J-integral value at the crack tip of a 2024-T3 aluminum plate. Three types of patches – metal, composite and functionally graded material (FGM) – were examined under tensile loading conditions, and Adekit-A140 adhesive was used to bond these repair patches to the aluminum plate.

Findings

The analysis considered various parameters, including crack length, the nature of fibers in the composite material, the gradation exponent for FGM patches and the nature of the face in contact with the adhesive for the FGM patch. Additionally, stress analysis was conducted, examining the J-integral values for the plate, shear stress in the adhesive layer and peel stress in the composite patch. The findings highlight that modifying the nature of the repair patch used can significantly enhance the structural integrity of the repaired plate.

Originality/value

The study analyzed J-integral values, shear stress in the adhesive and peel stress in the composite patch. Various parameters, including crack length, fiber type, gradation exponent and adhesive contact face nature, were considered. Results demonstrate that the J-integral value can be significantly reduced by altering the repair patch type, highlighting the effectiveness of customized patch materials in enhancing structural integrity.

Abstract

Purpose

Wheeled robots have been widely used in People’s Daily life. Accurate positioning is the premise of autonomous navigation. In this paper, an optimization-based visual-inertial-wheel odometer tightly coupled system is proposed, which solves the problem of failure of visual inertia initialization due to unobservable scale.The aim of this paper is to achieve robust localization of visually challenging scenes.

Design/methodology/approach

During system initialization, the wheel odometer measurement and visual-inertial odometry (VIO) fusion are initialized using maximum a posteriori (MAP). Aiming at the visual challenge scene, a fusion method of wheel odometer and inertial measurement unit (IMU) measurement is proposed, which can still be robust initialization in the scene without visual features. To solve the problem of low track accuracy caused by cumulative errors of VIO, the local and global positioning accuracy is improved by integrating wheel odometer data. The system is validated on a public data set.

Findings

The results show that our system performs well in visual challenge scenarios, can achieve robust initialization with high efficiency and improves the state estimation accuracy of wheeled robots.

Originality/value

To realize robust initialization of wheeled robot, wheel odometer measurement and vision-inertia fusion are initialized using MAP. Aiming at the visual challenge scene, a fusion method of wheel odometer and IMU measurement is proposed. To improve the accuracy of state estimation of wheeled robot, wheel encoder measurement and plane constraint information are added to local and global BA, so as to achieve refined scale estimation.

Abstract

Purpose

The main objectives of this paper are to develop a novel perturbation method (PM) to solve the complex-orthogonal eigenvalue problem and further propose an exact complex mode superposition method (CMSM) for the non-proportionally rate-independent damped systems.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel PM is developed to solve the eigenvalue problem. The PM reduced the N-order generalized complex eigenvalue problem into a set of n algebraic equations by the perturbation theory. The convergence and accuracy of the PM are demonstrated by several numerical examples. Further, an exact CMSM is presented. The influences of the imaginary part response of the modal coordinate and the off-diagonal elements of the damping matrix as well as the modal truncation on the solution by CMSM are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed CMSM.

Findings

The eigenvalues obtained by PM would converge to the exact ones with the increase of the modal numbers. For seismic response, the influence of the imaginary part solutions of the modal coordinate would increase with the increase of the coupling factor. The contribution of higher modes to acceleration response is greater than that to the displacement. The cumulative mode contribution coefficient of acceleration is developed to estimate the numbers of the complex modes for the acceleration seismic response by the CMSM.

Originality/value

1. An eigenvalue perturbation method for a rate-independent damped system is proposed. 2. PM is carried out by the real mode and accomplishes the reduction of the matrix. 3. CMSM is established for rate-independent damped systems. 4. CMSM considers the effect of imaginary part solutions of the modal coordinate. 5. Modal truncation index is developed to estimate the complex mode number for CMSM.

Abstract

Technological innovations have affected and modified practically every element of human life and work. Education is one of the areas that has been greatly influenced by its dynamism. Technology has created an ecosystem in which education can be delivered via e-modes. The objective of this chapter is to study the impact of personalized learning on the student’s concentration level. The research methodology is top-down and includes both primary and secondary data sources. The sample was drawn using a probability-random sampling procedure with a response distribution of 50%, a margin of error of 10%, and a confidence level of 90%. The inquiry was carried out in various Indian states throughout the academic year 2020–2023. A 419-student sample was used in the study, and they were evaluated in two rounds using a pre-tested questionnaire. The association was determined for the experiencing group utilizing SPSS Version 25 and the analytic methods of factor analysis. This chapter presents options for higher education institutions, governments, and regulators to embrace and adapt. We are convinced that the study’s various recommendations will contribute to the development of a long-term strategy and plan to achieve the aim of ‘education for all, work for all’. The study investigates how the existing education model might adapt in the near future to keep up with the shifting paradigm and the arrival of Education 5.0.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework for the assessment of service quality of bus fleet services based on the service quality influencing factors. The paper also tries to evolve a quantitative measure for fleet service quality in the form of a fleet service quality index.

Design/methodology/approach

A graph theoretical approach is employed in this paper for bus fleet service quality assessment. Modelling of fleet service quality factors and their interrelations with due attention towards their structure is achieved through graph theory. A directed graph (digraph) of the service quality is developed, where its nodes represent factors influencing the quality while its edges show the degree of interrelationships. A matrix, which is equivalent to the digraph, is established that will generate a service quality function that will result in the development of a fleet service quality index (FSQI).

Findings

Attaining customer satisfaction through assurance of quality is the cornerstone of the existence and survival of any business organization, and bus fleet services are no exception to this. Several influential factors are there for the bus fleet service quality. This research paper has identified factors such as fleet management practices, operational characteristics, safety and reliability features, travel comfort, bus maintenance and environmental concerns that affect fleet service quality. Every factor is composed of distinct sub-factors. Furthermore, these factors are linked with one another. A higher value of the fleet service quality index indicates the adequate performance of the bus fleet service organization.

Practical implications

The methodology is useful for not only evaluating but also for comparison of service quality of different fleet agencies or organizations. The perceptions would be useful to the fleet service managers to create procedures and arrangements for improving the service quality.

Originality/value

The paper identifies various service quality factors of the bus fleet and an evaluation scheme for those factors has been developed. Based on these, a framework had been developed for the assessment of the service quality of different fleet service providers.

Abstract

Purpose

The metaverse, a virtual space where one can build and explore with others using avatars, is drawing global interest. Then questions arise: What drives consumers to customize their avatars and purchase virtual items in the metaverse? Who customizes and purchases virtual items more than others? To find the answers, this study tested a research model that explains why consumers customize their avatars and buy virtual items in the metaverse.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the stimuli-organism-response model, this study posits that metaverse characteristics (i.e. escapism, visual attractiveness, social interaction and autonomy) arouse consumers’ curiosity toward the metaverse, which in turn evokes avatar customization behavior and virtual item purchase intention. Survey data from 501 metaverse-experienced consumers in both the US and Korea are analyzed.

Findings

The result revealed that all four metaverse characteristics were found to stimulate consumers’ curiosity. Consumers’ curiosity enhances avatar customization behavior and purchase intention of the virtual items. Further, avatar customization behavior increases the purchase intention of virtual items.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable insights into how metaverse platforms can effectively engage consumers by stimulating curiosity, especially through social interaction, and offering extensive avatar customization options and virtual items.

Originality/value

This study highlights how the metaverse’s open-ended experiences, user-driven customization and social interactions – unlike traditional online games – spark consumer curiosity. It emphasizes the pivotal role of curiosity in driving metaverse engagement and highlights the need to consider it as a central construct in future research. Additionally, this study provides managerial implications for virtual item purchases in the metaverse.

This chapter focusses on how early childhood education and care (ECEC) has been extended and configured in recent decades in advanced capitalistic countries. We will first set out the main societal benefits associated with public investment in ECEC and then discuss how neoliberalism and cutbacks in social services have coexisted with the expansion of ECEC as a social policy in recent years.

In particular, we will delve into the role of Social Investment as a policy framework that supports the expansion of ECEC in advanced capitalistic countries, and then we will highlight the challenges that ECEC faces in terms of universalisation and diversity of needs, areas in which social innovation (both citizen and institution-led) is playing an emergent and growing role.
