Abstract

Purpose

This research used the technology acceptance model (TAM) to explore the effect of customer relationship management, financial literacy and social influence on users’ intentions to adopt online banking. Furthermore, it explores the moderating role of personal innovativeness in technology in this context.

Design/methodology/approach

The measuring scale in this study was refined iteratively through talks with domain experts. A digital survey was used to gather data from 524 respondents, and PLS-SEM was used for analysis.

Findings

The findings reveal that customer relationship management and financial literacy significantly impact perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use but not the intention to adopt online banking. Perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use significantly influence intention, whereas personal innovativeness and social influence do not. Additionally, the moderation effects of personal innovativeness between customer relationship management, financial literacy, social influence and intention are insignificant.

Originality/value

This innovative study introduces personal innovativeness in technology as a moderator in the perspective of online banking adoption, setting new standards in the field. This important point has not been covered in previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Under the integrated perspective of the Net Valence Framework (NVF) and Theory of Reasoned action (TRA), this research intends to examine the impact of drivers (perceived risks (PRs) and benefits) on FinTech adoption (FA) as well as on business sustainability (BS) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Oman. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of drivers (perceived risks and benefits) on FinTech adoption (FA) and business sustainability (BS) of SMEs in Oman , under the integrated perspective of the Net Valence Framework (NVF) and Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA).

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data was collected from 402 owners and managers of SMEs in Muscat, Oman using a purposive sampling method. Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares was mainly applied to assess the PRs and perceived benefits (PBs) determining both FA and BS of SMEs.

Findings

The results indicate that PBs (economic, convenience, transaction efficiency) positively impact FA, while PRs (financial, legal, security, operational) act as deterrents toward FA. Both the benefits and risks significantly influence BS. FA itself fosters sustainability, and PBs directly enhance it through ease of use, cost reduction and knowledge acquisition. Conversely, PRs hinder sustainability due to concerns about skills gaps, security, social inclusion and environmental considerations.

Practical implications

The research forms a model capturing the pros and cons of FA of SMEs to provide stakeholders with ideas that would promote sustainability and drive fintech-based growth and innovation. For instance, by improving financial management efficiency, increasing market access and enhancing competitiveness, SMEs can adopt fintech solutions to support sustainable growth and achieve Sustainable Development Goals across the region’s economy.

Originality/value

The current research, through the lens of the NVF as well as TRA, explores the contribution of FA determined by PRs and benefits toward BS of SMEs in the context of Oman.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the potential of Sharia status as ex ante information to signal the quality of an issuing firm by improving the decision-making process of potential investors when assessing initial public offerings (IPOs) in an environment where information asymmetry is pronounced. Potential investors face challenges in evaluating and determining the true value of IPO issues, which inherently influences their decision-making. Consequently, this results in pronounced price fluctuations in IPO shares, leading to higher underpricing.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a sample of 350 IPOs listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) between 2004 and 2021 to examine the signaling role of Sharia-compliance status. A three-model approach is used to ensure that the study's objectives are met. The first model investigates the effect of Sharia status on underpricing to determine whether the main beneficiary of such a signal is the investor or the issuer. The second model examines the effect of Sharia status on investor demand to determine if such a signal influences prospective investors' investment decision-making processes. The third model inspects the effect of Sharia status on investor divergence of beliefs to measure the signal's ability to reduce information asymmetry within the Malaysian IPO market.

Findings

The Malaysian IPO market relies heavily on the fixed-price mechanism, which exacerbates high information asymmetry, affecting potential investors' behavior, asset price formation and return generation on the first day of listing. The study results indicate that Sharia status does not have any signaling role in the Malaysian IPO market. This is because investors in the Malaysian market are driven by ex ante information that helps unveil relevant information that leads to capital gains. Furthermore, most new issues in the Malaysian IPO market fall under Sharia status, diluting the relevance of such information for prospective investors in determining profitable investments.

Practical implications

The findings highlight the challenges faced by issuing firms in estimating market demand due to limited premarket insights and the difficulties prospective investors face in identifying the quality of issuing firms. Efforts to provide more information on investor demand can reduce uncertainty and facilitate more informed decision-making.

Originality/value

This research stands as one of the pioneering efforts to provide an empirical explanation of the potential signaling influence of Sharia status in an emerging IPO market.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a review and analysis of the literature on halal services over 25 years. The number of publications on halal services has increased over the years in the fields of business, management and economic research; however, the topic has been discussed less comprehensively in relation to bibliometric analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted using review and bibliometric analysis. In total, 346 articles were extracted using a modified Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses procedure, and 176 documents were eliminated because they were not within the scope of the Halal Services topic. Finally, 170 articles were analyzed using the Biblioshiny-Bibliometrix R package.

Findings

Research on halal services has grown steadily over the past 25 years. Most studies were conducted in Muslim countries; however, some non-Muslim countries, such as the United Kingdom and China, also contributed to the topic of halal services. Thematic analysis revealed that most halal services papers are categorized under the “Niche Theme” or the “Basic Theme.”

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes by providing future researchers with knowledge and information on knowledge structures and state-of-the-art halal services. This study also provides insights into the development of novel ideas that may contribute to expanding the research on halal services worldwide.

Originality/value

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of halal services research using bibliometric analysis. Through this method, this study attempts to summarize the trends in halal service research over 25 years, which may suggest future research directions into halal services.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the knowledge structure of halal certification in food and beverages. The growth of the Muslim population and the expanding economic activities among the Muslim community have necessitated extensive and comprehensive halal certification, particularly in food and beverage products.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a science mapping approach, this study explores the knowledge structure based on past publications in food and beverages and its association with halal certification, logos and brands. Applying bibliographic coupling and co-word analysis, the present and future trends of halal certification in food and beverages are explored by presenting a network visualization to present the underlying themes and research streams.

Findings

The main finding from recent and emerging themes shows that the pivotal perspective is increasing consumers’ knowledge and awareness of halal-certified food products. Future trends stemming from the co-word analysis suggest the importance of exploring consumer halal food product determinants.

Originality/value

This study is relevant to stakeholders, scholars and practitioners, particularly in disseminating information and voice on the importance of halal-certified food products that are recognized as having better quality and contributing to environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the variables that impact initial public offerings (IPO) initial returns witnessed in Pakistan from 1996 to 2019 using pre-listing information variables, namely country-level institutional quality, sponsor ownership and pricing mechanism. IPO oversubscription is included as a moderating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is motivated by the premise that the Pakistani IPO market is characterised by a broad range of institutional and regulatory frameworks. Multiple regression studies, i.e. ordinary least square (OLS) and quantile least square (QLS), were performed on 102 IPOs issued on the Pakistan stock market.

Findings

The present study findings suggest that the quality of public service, the independence of civil service from political influences and the legitimacy of government increase investors’ confidence in the prospects of companies, hence increasing the demand for IPO and initial returns. In addition, good regulatory quality enhances market transparency and lowers uncertainty, hence signalling high-quality IPOs and leading in substantial initial returns. The negative effect of the lock-up ratio on the initial return of an IPO is consistent with the risk-return trade-off theory, which asserts that the lock-up ratio indicates the quality of the IPO.

Practical implications

The results provide market regulators, policymakers, investors and underwriters with useful data for assuring proper subscriptions of issued shares, as these variables are crucial for company transparency and market efficiency. The findings will also help investors make better IPO subscription decisions.

Originality/value

The present study explains the important influencing factors of IPO initial return in the Pakistani market.

Abstract

Purpose

Islamic banking is a financial institution that is concerned with the regulation of the Shariah guidelines. Several full-fledged and Windows-based Islamic banks in Pakistan have reported non-Shariah-compliant income (NSCI) due to various operational investment activities. Hence, this issue has attracted this study to examine the impact of NSCI, especially from the perspective of Islamic bank (IB) customers’ trust and commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used trust-commitment theory as the underlying theory to examine customers’ trust and commitment. A total of 341 questionnaires have been distributed, and the data is analysed using the structural equation modelling (SEM) method.

Findings

The results show the commitment of IB customers has a significant relationship with the benevolence, trust and shared values of the top management of IBs. Meanwhile, the other two constructs, the ability and integrity of the top management, are found to be insignificant.

Research limitations/implications

The gender diversity among banks’ customers in Pakistan is the main limitation in this study. There were difficulties in selecting a more representative sample due to gender domination issues in the country. Thus the data revealed that 62.8% were male respondents, which confirms the prior research on the gender disparity.

Originality/value

This study provides interesting insights into the context of Pakistan’s Islamic banking sector as it examines top management’s ability, integrity, benevolence and shared values to affect trust and commitment, and the role of trust as a mediator.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of published research on the halal value chain (HVC) that is accessible through the Scopus database.

Design/methodology/approach

A corpus of 120 research papers that were indexed by Scopus underwent an extensive investigation. The authors used the bibliometrix program and the VOSviewer software to analyze and visualize the exported data.

Findings

The results suggest a rise in scholarly investigations carried out in this specific domain, with “food supply,” “decision-making” and “supply chain management” as the most frequent emerging terms. This study contributes to the existing study by clarifying the connections between the supply chain and the HVC and setting future research directions.

Originality/value

This study makes a substantial contribution by defining a new area of academic study and establishing a previously unidentified link between the literature of halal logistics, halal supply chain and the HVC.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a system dynamics (SD) simulation model to forecast the performance of the Indonesian halal industry to verify whether decision-making has been properly executed to increase the contribution of the success factors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study establishes a SD-based model using three subsystems, namely, the halal assurance and certification process, the government and the export–import subsystem.

Findings

The best scenario is the third scenario or the combined scenario of providing facilities to accelerate the micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), carrying out halal certification, reducing the time for the certification process, increasing the number of the halal auditor and increasing the awareness from enterprises (both MSMEs and large enterprises) to carry out halal certification because of the internal and external motivations.

Research limitations/implications

First, the demand for certification of the type of food product is acquired using the number of SMEs and large companies. Second, the model does not include the government budget as a constraint.

Practical implications

This study provides essential insights into implementing the best policies that can increase the performance of the halal industry.

Social implications

This study revealed that relevant policy scenarios could be built after simulating and analyzing each scenario’s effect on the halal industry’s performance.

Originality/value

This study will enrich the scientific insight related to institutional theory and resource-based view, as those theories identify success factors associated with the performance of the halal food industry. This study will also enrich the scientific insight related to system dynamic methodology, as it is used to model the performance of the halal industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the direct and indirect impact of competitive intelligence (CI) practices on sustainable competitiveness (SC) and firm performance (FP) mediated by strategic design collaboration (SDC).

Design/methodology/approach

This empirical study is based on a survey of 179 respondents comprising senior managers from pharmaceutical companies operating in Egypt across three sectors: public, private and multinational corporations (MNCs).

Findings

The results show that CI has a positive and significant impact on SDC, which, in turn, positively impacts SC and FP. The study also shows that SDC mediates the relationship between CI and both SC and FP.

Originality/value

This study sheds light on the significant and mediating role of SDC in explaining the relationship between CI and both SC and FP.
