Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between policyholders’ psychographic characteristics and demand decisions for life insurance products in Uganda.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on a cross-sectional survey. Using a purposive sampling method, 389 questionnaires were administered to life insurance policyholders in the four geographical regions of Uganda. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyze the primary data, specifically to test the relationships between the dependent and independent variables.

Findings

The findings indicate a positive and significant influence of psychographic characteristics on demand decisions for life insurance products. In addition, the analysis indicates that the two first-order constructs of psychographic characteristics, namely price consciousness and consumer innovativeness, are positive and significant predictors of demand decisions for life insurance products. In contrast, the third first-order construct religious salience, exhibits a negative and nonsignificant effect on demand decisions for life insurance products.

Practical implications

For insurance practitioners, to influence demand decisions, they should emphasize premium-related appeals in their marketing messages (price consciousness) ignore product decisions based on religious beliefs and norms (religious salience). They should also ensure that insurance products are highly trustable and experiential (consumer innovativeness). For insurance policymakers, it offers an in-depth understanding of customer psychographic characteristics, which can be used to identify exploitative information embedded in certain marketing campaigns targeting specific psychographic characteristics, for better regulation.

Originality/value

The study provides a basis for understanding lifestyle and personality characteristics (psychographics), which may influence demand decisions for life insurance products in a developing country like Uganda, where the insurance industry is at an early stage of development.

Abstract

The final chapter of this book captures a diverse range of case studies across teaching and learning and campus stewardship. The five case studies presented here add illustrative insights of global actions, following on from the four case studies presented within previous chapters. These contributions provide compelling and practical insights into how Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are broadly addressing SDG2 through student competitions in the first section, and curriculum approaches in subject areas in which ‘food’ and ‘hunger’ might not be expected in the second section. The final section of cases further explores HEIs’ approaches to food security through both a curriculum lens and a student-led campus project. It is a fitting way to close the book since the cases collectively illustrate the potential contribution that any student and/or educator might make to raising awareness of and action towards achieving zero hunger and SDG2.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to examine the impact of religiosity and other control variables on Muslims’ environmental preservation and economic growth choices in 33 nations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses data from the World Values Survey (Waves 4–7) with a large sample size of 30,242 individuals. Logistic regression analysis is used to analyze the data, and the robustness principle is applied using the marginal effect of interaction variables method to select a viable model.

Findings

This study reveals that different aspects of religiosity – cognitive, affective and behavioral – positively impact the tendency of Muslims in 33 countries to prioritize environmental protection over economic progress. However, these influences vary significantly, as seen through odds ratios. In essence, the degree of religious devotion in these nations affects individuals’ leaning toward environmental preservation. This impact is further shaped by other factors such as politics, governance, economic development, environmental measures and legal frameworks.

Practical implications

The practical implication of this study is the development of an alternative theory that explains the conditions and categories under which religious beliefs and attitudes can influence the preferences of Muslims concerning environmental issues and economic growth.

Originality/value

This study fills a void in the body of literature by examining the nonlinear relationship between religiosity and individual Muslim preferences for environmental preservation and economic growth. It offers a framework for comprehending religion’s impact on Muslims’ redistributive individual preferences in these fields.

Abstract

Purpose

This article provides a comparative analysis of the relationship between insurance and economic growth in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. The research aims to understand how insurance impacts economic growth in these two regions, highlighting the similarities and differences between them.

Design/methodology/approach

The study analyzes economic and insurance data from various countries in the OECD and MENA regions over a specific period. It employs the statistical method of Partial Least Squares (PLS) univariate regression to examine the relationships between the variables.

Findings

The study finds a positive correlation between insurance and economic growth in both regions, though the characteristics and mechanisms differ. In the OECD region, where insurance markets are more developed, insurance is strongly linked to economic growth. In contrast, the MENA region, with lower levels of insurance and a less developed industry, still shows a positive effect of insurance on economic growth. The article also identifies factors specific to the OECD and MENA regions that influence this relationship, such as insurance industry regulation, access to financial services, economic and political stability and cultural and institutional differences.

Originality/value

The originality of this research lies in its use of the PLS regression method, setting it apart from previous studies in the same field that have typically relied on other econometric techniques.

Abstract

Purpose

This study illustrates the conceptual framework that expands the knowledge of the fundamental components that describe how AI-driven servant leadership (SEL) influences the job resources (JR), work engagement (WE) and job performance (JP) of tourism and hospitality employees.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical study was conducted on a sample of 953 international tourism and hospitality employees who were selected via a purposive and snowball sampling approach in a cross-sectional survey. The analysis was performed using a partial least square-structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results of this study confirmed the positive impact of AI-driven SEL on employee JR with the boundary conditions of AI-driven SEL.

Practical implications

This study finding assists tourism and hospitality practitioners in understanding that in the near future, AI will have a major effect on the nature of work, including the impact on leadership styles. Hence, AI-driven SEL holds both positive (through direct impact on JR) and negative (via boundary conditions) impacts on employees’ JP and ultimately organizational success. Accordingly, managers should employ AI-driven SEL to increase employees’ JR, and once employees achieve high WE, they should constrict AI-driven SEL boundary conditions and their influence between JR and WE and WE and JP.

Originality/value

This study offers a novel and original conceptual model that advances AI-driven social theory, SEL theory and job demands-resources (JD-R) theory by synthesizing, applying and generalizing gained knowledge in a methodical way.

Abstract

Purpose

Reflective practice (RP) is a key skill for developing one’s professional practice. It has, however, not been unanimously prioritised in public health (PH) competency and education frameworks. Reflection activities are often unstructured in higher education. There is also a dearth of literature on the RPs of undergraduate PH students. This study aims to explore in greater depth how RP helps undergraduate PH students explore their own learning in internships.

Design/methodology/approach

Reflection prompts were designed using the DEAL model. 124 written reflection entries from 32 students were collected and analysed thematically using a deductive-inductive approach. The conceptual framework of internship learning goals by Ash and Clayton (2009) was used to guide the deductive analysis.

Findings

Three themes were identified: initial engagement with reflective learning; gradual integration of reflective learning, and a transformative phase involving professional development, personal growth, civic learning, growth through struggle, being confronted with differences in expectations, and skill acquisition.

Originality/value

This study extends the limited evidence regarding RP in undergraduate non-medical PH education, and contributes toward informing the revision of undergraduate PH programmes, for example, by integrating structured reflection earlier in the curricula, and establishing/supporting mentorship programmes between institutions. The findings call for PH educators to be more intentional in creating opportunities to nurture RP among budding PH professionals.

Abstract

Purpose

The Indonesian Waqf Board and United Nation Development Program are developing green waqf in Indonesia. Development of green waqf in Indonesia as a response to save the earth from environmental damage and other social impacts. This paper aims to measure public perceptions about willingness to participate in making donations to the green waqf program in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

Modifying the Theory of Reasoned Action framework, questionnaire data were collected from 311 Muslims in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling method.

Findings

The findings show that attitude, subjective norm, product knowledge and trust influence the Muslims in Indonesia to donate to green waqf. In contrast, Islamic religiosity harms the intention to donate in green waqf but is insignificant.

Research limitations/implications

This research was conducted using a quantitative approach with a limited sample of several communities, so the results cannot be generalized. Further investigation needs to be carried out by involving a more diverse sample to get better results. However, the results of this study can be used as an illustration of how Muslims behave in donating green waqf.

Practical implications

These results imply that to develop green waqf in Indonesia, especially in attracting waqf candidates willing to make donations, waqf institutions must carry out engineering to shape the attitude of prospective donors through various activities such as socialization and education of the green waqf program. Waqf institutions must also build public trust by involving public figures to campaign for the green waqf program. This will likely increase prospective donors’ active participation in donating their money to develop green waqf in Indonesia.

Originality/value

Waqf is a severe concern for the Indonesian Government, including waqf for the environment. To the bets of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first attempt to look at the behavior of the green waqf model in Indonesia. Thus, the acceleration of waqf development can be realized and is expected to impact the community significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper reviews the literature on disability inclusion (DI) in supply and demand chains of hospitality and tourism (H&T) organisations. The purpose of this study is to assess disability support and interventions within H&T organisations. Through the assessment, we identified gaps to recommend H&T scholars’ and practitioners’ knowledge of DI from new perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

An integrative review was conducted to examine the published evidence on DI in H&T organisations. This study used high-ranking H&T journals from the Scopus and Web of Science databases between 2001 and 2023. In total, 101 empirical papers met the criteria for the review analysis.

Findings

DI focuses heavily on customer disabilities, with scant research on DI in H&T employment. The review emphasises the critical need for empirical research into the varied disability employment ecosystem within H&T organisations, focusing on social integration for inclusive workplaces.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the H&T literature, which previously overlooked the disability context in diversity. The research offers strategies for creating inclusive environments in the H&T industry for disabled consumers and producers.
