Abstract
Purpose
How much variance in firm performance can be attributed to firms’ corporate political activities (CPA)? Under what conditions does CPA contribute to firm performance? To theorize and empirically tackle these questions, we build on the resource-based view (RBV) to theorize how CPA might improve or hinder firm performance, and specifically examine the direct relationship between firms’ investments in lobbying activities and their performance. We also expect firm growth rate to moderate the relationship between lobbying and performance.
Design/methodology/approach
We empirically test our hypotheses using large-scale longitudinal panel data from publicly traded US firms from 2008 to 2018.
Findings
Our analyses support our predictions of the double-edged sword effect of lobbying on firm performance. Moreover, our results show that this effect is steeper for firms with higher growth rates.
Originality/value
Our study contributes meaningful insights to strategy scholarship on the influence of nonmarket strategies, highlighting the relevance of firm-specific conditions in shaping the performance outcomes of such strategies. In particular, we make a contribution by identifying a nonlinear relationship between lobbying and firm performance, which is amplified in fast-growing firms compared to stagnant ones.

Abstract
Purpose
An increasing number of immersive technologies have been adopted in museum tourism in response to shifting consumer habits in the digital era. In contrast, the authenticity experience of museum tourists relies on genuine relics, the environment and activities, which are ancient or traditional. This raises the question of whether tourists can perceive authenticity in immersive technology-based museum tourism. To address this question, this study aims to explore the impact of virtual reality (VR) attributes on tourists’ presence, tourism authenticity and subsequent behavioral intentions in virtual museums.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected via scenario-based surveys of participants who had taken virtual museum tours based on VR. A total of 174 effective questionnaires were collected for exploratory factor analysis via SPSS 25. Afterward, 597 questionnaires were obtained for confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis via Mplus 7.4.
Findings
A conceptual model of how VR attributes influence presence, authenticity and visit intention was developed. There is a chain intermediary between presence and visit intentions, from original authenticity to interactive authenticity and then to emotional authenticity. Technology readiness and museum familiarity moderate some relationships between VR attributes and presence.
Practical implications
The findings can guide museums in improving the use of VR. For example, managers can improve the quality of virtual systems and adopt various interactive forms to enhance tourists’ participation experiences.
Originality/value
These research findings contribute to the research area of immersive technology adoption, enhance the understanding of tourism authenticity in the new context of technology application and extend the presence-emotion-intention theory.

Abstract
Purpose
The government support for research and development (R&D) initiatives in the pharmaceutical sector has been declining. The purpose of this study is to analyze factors influencing the efficacy of government R&D support programs directed at pharmaceutical enterprises in South Korea, aiming to provide valuable insights for policymakers responsible for resource allocation in the pharmaceutical industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses data from 490 R&D projects conducted by 106 pharmaceutical enterprises between 2018 and 2020, sourced from the National Technical Information Service and Drug Approval Research and Technology repositories. The data were analyzed using negative binomial regression analysis operated by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.
Findings
Applied research, cooperative research and the number of doctoral researchers positively impact both the quantitative and qualitative performance of the papers. The number of doctoral researchers, government research funds and the ratio of private investment to total R&D investment positively impacted the quantitative and qualitative performance of patents. However, enterprise age negatively affected patent performance. Notably, sales were significantly associated with patent qualitative performance but not with patent quantitative performance.
Originality/value
While previous studies have primarily focused on specific types of government R&D support or individual sectors, this study provides a broader perspective by incorporating a variety of variables, to examine the overall performance of government R&D programs in the pharmaceutical sector. This paper addresses the growing concern over declining government support and offers insights that were not fully explored in prior studies. By doing so, this research highlights the importance of understanding how diverse factors collectively influence the effectiveness of government R&D support, providing new directions for innovation and excellence in the pharmaceutical industry.

Purpose
Workforce diversity is essential for success from the perspectives of economic development and intellectual property. However, the construction industry is losing out on these gains due to the low diversity among them. The study aims to identify challenges impeding workforce diversity in construction literature through a mixed review approach.
Design/methodology/approach
The study desk reviewed 188 relevant construction peer-reviewed articles and conference papers with no restrictions on the time range. The study adopted the mixed methodology review approach through bibliometric and systematic content analyses.
Findings
The study identified 67 challenges and further classified them into 4 broad categories. These were industry-related, organisational-, personal or attitudinal- and health-related challenges. Organisational challenges were the most prevalent challenges of diversity uptake in the construction industry. The publications' most influential sources, countries/regions and annual trends were also discussed.
Practical implications
Classifying the challenges hindering diversity contributes to the existing knowledge base. The framework's interrelationships among categorised barriers will enable construction professionals to make informed decisions in promoting diversity in the industry.
Originality/value
This study has a broad geographical reach, allowing the findings to be widely applicable to the diverse practice of the worldwide construction sector.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to analyze the current state of technological advancements research in addressing the diverse risk factors involved in earthmoving equipment operations through Rasmussen's (1997) risk management framework. It examines how existing technologies research capture, manage and disseminate risk information across various levels of safety management by defining their core functionalities. The research highlights gaps in current technological solutions research regarding the flow of information in the risk management framework. It emphasizes the need for an integrated approach in technological advancements to enhance the holistic safety management approach capable of capturing various risks across different levels of risk management.
Design/methodology/approach
This research employs a multistep approach. Initially, earthmoving equipment risk factors and functionalities of technological solutions were identified through a systematic review of current scholarly works. Subsequently, social network analysis (SNA) and Pareto analysis were applied to evaluate and determine the importance of risk factors and functionalities of technologies for improving them.
Findings
The findings highlight the importance of multilevel approaches that expand technological functionalities to address risk factors across all levels of Rasmussen's (1997) risk management framework. The current combination of technological advancements focuses primarily on on-site monitoring, congested work sites, site layout/path planning, utility problems, safety training, and blind spot and visibility. Site monitoring and warning systems, supported by sensors and computer vision (CV), are pivotal for identifying risks and enabling data-driven safety management. However, workforce-level cognitive factors (W1-W6), which influence safety behavior, remain underexplored for enhancing their functionality to anticipation and response during the operation. Prevention is the core function of current technological solutions, emphasizing the need to address human and equipment risk factors such as sources of hazards in earthmoving operations. Learning: AI as a data-driven approach and IoT systems are key for future development, and when grounded in ontology-based knowledge of earthwork, they gain a structured vision of earthmoving equipment types, their interactions and the earthwork activities. It enhances the capabilities of these technologies to capture and manage complex interactions between hazard sources (human and equipment), supporting comprehensive risk factors across all levels of the risk management framework.
Originality/value
This paper elucidates that technological solutions for safety management in earthmoving equipment operations require a more holistic approach—grounded in an understanding of functionalities of technologies—to effectively capture risks across various levels of Rasmussen (1997) risk management. It emphasizes that technological solutions should not only address isolated hazards but also ensure the continuous flow of information on multiple risk factors across the risk management framework.

Abstract
Purpose
This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of the interdisciplinary literature on drones in last-mile delivery (LMD) to extrapolate pertinent insights from and into the logistics management field.
Design/methodology/approach
Rooting their analytical categories in the LMD literature, the authors performed a deductive, theory refinement SLR on 307 interdisciplinary journal articles published during 2015–2022 to integrate this emergent phenomenon into the field.
Findings
The authors derived the potentials, challenges and solutions of drone deliveries in relation to 12 LMD criteria dispersed across four stakeholder groups: senders, receivers, regulators and societies. Relationships between these criteria were also identified.
Research limitations/implications
This review contributes to logistics management by offering a current, nuanced and multifaceted discussion of drones' potential to improve the LMD process together with the challenges and solutions involved.
Practical implications
The authors provide logistics managers with a holistic roadmap to help them make informed decisions about adopting drones in their delivery systems. Regulators and society members also gain insights into the prospects, requirements and repercussions of drone deliveries.
Originality/value
This is one of the first SLRs on drone applications in LMD from a logistics management perspective.
