Abstract

Purpose

This retrospective phenomenological case study examines the experiences of 18 politicians who participated in a political campaign using performing arts and artists in a regional heads and legislators in Indonesia. Also, the role of Gandrung art as a performing art is becoming a political communication tool for political actors in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a retrospective phenomenological case. The informants recruited were 18 politicians who have local, regional and national political levels. The participants were interviewed about their experiences of campaigning using traditional performing arts as a form of political communication. Data collection techniques used in this study include interviews and photo documentation during the campaign process to triangulate findings.

Findings

Based on a case study analysis and through thematic analysis, this research reveals three emerging themes which indicate that performing arts function as political communication tools in three significant ways: (1) as a form of artistic expression for conveying political messages through movement and the use of dancer costumes; (2) as a medium for showcasing cultural identity and representation as a form of concern for the local culture of voters; and (3) as a means to garner mass appeal and propagate political propaganda.

Research limitations/implications

The study has two limitations. First, the study only interviewed a small number of participants. Thus, generalization for wider contexts of politicians is not possible. Second, the study focuses on examining the voice of politicians and analyzing it using thematic analysis.

Originality/value

There is a scarcity of research that specifically focuses on uncovering the perspectives of politicians who employ performing arts as a political communication tool. This study contributes to the understanding that art performance is inherently non-neutral, highlighting how performing arts can actively engage in political communication by conveying messages, shaping cultural identity and influencing public opinion in the context of Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the mediating role of three psychological contingent factors: collegiality, creativity, and job satisfaction, on the relationship between management control system (MCS) implementation and performance of study programs in higher education institutions (HEIs). This study also examines the impact of contingent factors from organizational aspects such as HEI types, lecturer’s age, experience and qualifications.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a survey method with 581 permanent lecturers who were subjected to MCS at HIEs as respondents. A partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach, with mediation analysis, is used to test the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

The results show that the implementation of MCSs, in both public and private HEIs, from the output and behavioral control dimensions is positively associated with the performance of the study programs, but input control is not. Additionally, creativity and job satisfaction are positively associated with the performance of the study programs, but not for collegiality. From the mediation analyses, creativity and job satisfaction mediate the relationship of all dimensions of MCS in relation to performance, except for one, namely, creativity does not mediate the relationship between behavioral control and performance. The analysis, however, reveals that collegiality does not mediate the relationship between all MCS dimensions and performance. The results of the multigroup analysis on different HEI types (public vs private) and demographic factors are discussed further.

Practical implications

The study’s findings offer valuable guidance for authorities on designing MCS models to enhance HEI study program performance. It highlights seven key contingent factors to consider: collegiality, creativity, job satisfaction, HEI type, age, experience and educational qualifications.

Originality/value

This study addresses the research gap related to the design of MCS in HEIs, and the inconsistencies of their role in performance by examining the influence of seven contingent factors addressed in prior literature. By so doing, this study provides new insights into the impact of collegiality, creativity, job satisfaction, different HEIs types (public vs private), age, experience and educational qualifications on the relationship between MCS implementation and performance of HEIs.

Abstract

Purpose

Corrosion of steel in marine environments poses a significant economic and environmental challenge because of its detrimental effects on marine structures and equipment. Traditional chemical inhibitors that mitigate corrosion often introduce harmful substances into the environment. As a result, there is a growing interest in exploring eco-friendly alternatives, such as plant-derived inhibitors, to reduce the environmental impact of corrosion protection strategies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Phyllanthus urinaria extract as a green anti-corrosion additive for rebar steel in marine conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Phyllanthus urinaria extract was prepared in the ethanol solution with the assistance of a sonicator. The steel’s surface upon addition of the extract was characterized using SEM, EDX and FTIR analysis. The electrochemical corrosion characteristics, including potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, were used to evaluate the inhibitory performance of the extract on steel under simulated marine conditions (3.5% NaCl solutions).

Findings

The results of this study showed that with Phyllanthus urinaria extract’s content of 0.02% in NaCl solution of 3.5%, the corrosion rate decreased to about 30% compared to the controlled sample. Measurements of the inhibitory mechanism analysis study for all solutions from 0 mg/L to 1.114 mg/L of polyphenol from Phyllanthus urinaria extract showed a significant reduction in rebar corrosion rate, especially with 0.2228 mg/L polyphenol. Reinforcement can increase corrosion inhibition by up to 30% compared to the control sample.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of using Phyllanthus urinaria extract as green inhibitor for protection of steel from the corrosion in the simulated marine solution. The protective mechanism for steel using Phyllanthus urinaria extract was investigated using the FTIR, SEM, EDX and electrochemical analysis. The results indicated that the polyphenols in the extract showed inhibition that could minimize the corrosion of reinforcement in marine environments.

Abstract

Purpose

This study’s main objective is to determine the extent to which social capital and psychological capital can explain differences in career adaptability among higher education students.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a survey research design. Data were gathered using an online questionnaire completed by 384 fourth-year undergraduate agricultural students in Iran. The inverse square root and multistage sampling methods were used to determine the sample size. The partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method examined the associations between latent variables.

Findings

The results suggest that social and psychological capital significantly influence the career adaptability of agricultural students, highlighting their significance in enhancing career adaptability. Moreover, psychological capital positively mediates the relationship between social capital and career adaptability.

Practical implications

Agricultural higher education institutions must focus on developing students' social and psychological capital to cultivate career adaptability in agricultural students. Agricultural higher education institutions, for example, should help students develop soft skills.

Originality/value

This study offers novel insights into the significance of individual resources, such as social and psychological capital, in enhancing the career adaptability of students. In addition, the key contribution of this study is the researchers' empirical evidence that multiple career resources are interconnected (social capital, career adaptability, and psychological capital).

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the readiness of Islamic Higher Education Institutions (IHEIs) to enter the third wave of education or future quality assurance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a descriptive quantitative method with observation, documentation, a questionnaire and an interactive model. The sample population included lecturers and quality assurance managers in IHEIs, totaling 129 respondents.

Findings

The results showed that IHEIs were prepared to implement future quality assurance to meet individual and societal needs. Furthermore, readiness was also shown in the following matters: Relevance of higher education institution vision, implementation of tripilization learning in higher education institutions, understanding of other cultures (cross-cultural sharing), application of multiple development models and noble values of local wisdom and national culture in tri-dharma.

Research limitations/implications

This study focused on the third wave of education quality assurance in IHEIs in Indonesia. However, the analysis was not conducted in all Indonesian universities as it specifically examined the readiness for implementing future quality assurance.

Practical implications

Policymakers should follow up on the readiness for implementing future quality assurance as a form of continuous improvement in managing the quality of IHEIs.

Originality/value

Most publications of quality assurance focused on compliance-oriented issues. However, this study aimed to fill the literature gaps and discuss the future quality assurance of IHEIs in Indonesia. In this context, future quality assurance was also known to guide IHEIs in rendering education relevant to the future needs of generations (graduates).

Abstract

Purpose

Vocational education and entrepreneurship are constantly increasing in research fields. However, what is the current state of vocational education and entrepreneurial research? Where will the area go next? These questions are still unanswered; thus, this study tries to map the research landscape of the study area to get insights and provide directions for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

This research collected extant literature on vocational education and entrepreneurship using Scopus scientific database. Bibliometric analysis has been performed to extract insights from 175 documents published in the study area. Content analysis on the extant literature has also been committed to getting contextual information and developing an integrated research framework for future researchers.

Findings

The bibliometric analysis revealed that training, career choice, curriculum, self-employment, student psychology, better job opportunity, learning environment and innovation are the most discussed in the vocational education and entrepreneurship literature. Developed nation’s strong presence, indicated by the number of publications in the field.

Originality/value

This study significantly contributes to entrepreneurship by disclosing advances in the literature and some of the most active research fronts in this sector, delivering insights that have yet to be wholly appreciated or appraised. The study also developed an integrated framework that could benefit various vocations, education and entrepreneurship stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to enhance the model of student learning behavior by expanding the traditional theory of reasoned action (TRA) to incorporate variables such as student mental well-being (SMW), attitude, subjective norms (SNB), perceived behavioral control (PBC) and climate change concerns. The study examines students’ intentions as a mediator variable and student area as a moderator variable in student learning behaviors.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire was administered to 610 higher education students in Gujarat, exploring variables related to student characteristics, mental well-being, attitudes, SNB, PBC, Climate change concerns (CML), change concerns and intentions to study. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling with mediation and moderation analyses using SPSS 22 and AMOS 26.

Findings

The empirical findings support the hypothesized relationships within the expanded model, indicating significant contributions of SMW, attitude, SNB, PBC and CML to forming solid intentions to pursue education. Additionally, the study reveals a positive association between intention and subsequent learning behavior moderated by the student residence area.

Research limitations/implications

The study confirms the proposed relationships within the expanded model, with SMW significantly influencing students’ academic intentions. Factors like attitude, SNB and climate change are crucial in shaping educational pursuits. The research enriches educational psychology by detailing the complex influences on student learning behavior, offering insights for enhancing educational strategies and outcomes as the academic environment evolves.

Originality/value

This research offers an innovative approach by expanding the traditional TRA to explore the influences on student learning behavior in education comprehensively. Integrating variables such as SMW, attitude and CML provides a nuanced understanding, contributing to theoretical development and practical educational implications.

Abstract

Purpose

This study pioneers examining the relationships between psychological factors, cognitive processes and entrepreneurial mindset to enhance an understanding of the underlying mechanisms contributing to successful entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach

Amos software applied a quantitative approach to analyze the fit indices for the hypothesized model, while SPSS conducted descriptive and factor analysis. Eventually, the primary survey technique was performed with quantitative research, collecting 413 numerical data through a structured, closed-ended Likert scale questionnaire delivered to the target respondents.

Findings

Results have shown that data analysis verifies the positive relationships between psychological factors and the entrepreneurial mindset (hypothesis H1) and cognitive processes and the entrepreneurial mindset (hypothesis H2). These findings contribute to understanding the mechanisms underpinning the entrepreneurial mindset and have implications for entrepreneurship development and support initiatives. The study findings also underscore the importance of understanding the covariance between psychology and cognition in the context of the entrepreneurial mindset – a complex and engaging aspect of the research that is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurship.

Research limitations/implications

It is important to note that the measuring tools used to evaluate these characteristics may have issues with common technique biases, self-report biases or limitations in fully reflecting their complexity. Awareness of these potential challenges is crucial for future research in this area.

Originality/value

This study's findings have significant practical implications for entrepreneurship training, education and policy-making initiatives. Their practicality will equip the reader with the necessary knowledge to succeed in entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Purpose

Entrepreneurial intention is crucial in both entrepreneurship literature and practice. However, limited information exists regarding entrepreneurs’ intentions in the realm of social enterprise creation. This study aims to determine the social entrepreneurial intentions of Generation Z students within the Indian environment by utilising the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and its applicability using personality factors like risk-taking ability, proactivity, empathy and emotional intelligence.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey method was used, and data was collected by Generation Z individuals at three public universities in India using a self-administered questionnaire. The study used a purposive sampling technique, and further, the model was tested using the partial least square-structural equation modelling technique.

Findings

The study findings supported the proposed model of extended TPB, demonstrating that factors such as emotional intelligence, risk-taking ability and proactiveness are found prominent in Indian students. Furthermore, the role of gender as a control variable reflected no effect on social entrepreneurial intentions.

Originality/value

This research enhances the literature on social entrepreneurship by offering novel insights into social entrepreneurial intention. It is among the pioneers of its type to examine social entrepreneurial intent concerning personality factors among students of higher education institutions. This study provides interesting insights for universities and policymakers since they play a crucial role in promoting these antecedents through education and stimulation by enhancing entrepreneurial culture in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the impact of digitalisation on waqf activities, focussing on blockchain, crowdfunding and artificial intelligence to predict future trends in digitalisation within waqf activities.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quantitative approach to combine the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT) to comprehensively analyze the elements that affect the adoption of digital technology. SmartPLS software conducted the data analysis after collecting the data using SPSS. In this study, 310 respondents comprising Muslims who contribute to waqf were collected.

Findings

This research provides important insights into the elements influencing future behavior and can help policymakers promote and facilitate the digitalisation of waqf activities, not only in Malaysia but also in similar situations worldwide.

Research limitations/implications

Analysis indicated that four hypotheses were validated, implying that effort expectancy, compatibility, observability and trialability are significant determinants affecting intention. The findings suggest significant potential for further research. This paper delineates numerous methodological challenges and concerns while proposing recommendations for further research. Future research could use additional search phrases and engines not incorporated in this study to provide a more comprehensive overview. This study primarily concentrates on the applications of waqf development, digitalisation, blockchain, crowdfunding and artificial intelligence.

Practical implications

The four hypotheses regarding facilitating condition, performance expectation, relative advantage and social influence were not supported as they were found to have no significant impact on intention. For practitioners, based on the findings, it can give some insight into digitalisation’s influence on the intention of contributing to waqf in society. As for the researchers, there could be some ideas to study other than the factors mentioned in this study, as well as the supporting literature for their studies.

Originality/value

This paper provides useful insights on how emerging technology can potentially disrupt the traditional waqf landscape. It emphasizes the unique contributions of digitalization in improving transparency and accessibility, blockchain in ensuring security and trust, crowdfunding in mobilizing resources and artificial intelligence in optimizing decision-making processes.
